The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Hey, im the singer in my band, and my drummer is really into Hardcore/emo. He always wants to do Rise against songs etc. Im really Iron Maiden/metallica/classical singer but you know, i try and do the best i can. i did "No Reason" by sum41 which i think is the hardest song i've ever sung, but i find things like where eagles dare, (maiden) easier which some people say is harder!?!? anyway, im trying to learn how to sing like Tim McIlrath (Rise Against) or that powerful growly voice, any pointers would be SO greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I've only posted a few rough clips throughout the years, the main ones done when I was pretty sing. I can scream but I don't because it's really not in my style at all. When i'm singing metal, it's usually pretty clean like Queensryche, Dream Theater, some Priest, Maiden, etc. I also do R&B/Soul type music which definetly doesn't need screaming. Yeah, the name makes no sense whatsoever since I don't really scream , I stole it from Steven Tyler. I'm male by the way.

Thanks Merkaba! Glad you like the tunes and your request for frienRABhip hath been approved.

Heh, I don't think I have an ego. I know I don't sing as best I could to help my voice. I would say time and money play more a part in it than ego. I do plan to look into a voice coach soon though. Our show on the 1st was canceled due to a venue shutting down (I'm kinda happy about that). So other than the show on the 8th I have no intention of singing until the new year. I haven't done any real singing since our show on Nov 10th either. So I've been taking it pretty easy.

I know that liquiRAB and such don't touch the vocal chorRAB, but if my throats feeling kinda sore the tea and ricolas sure do seem to help. Maybe its all mental. Thanks again Merkaba. If we ever come to your town let me know and you're on the guest list ;) (assuming you like free shows).

hey hey, i gots a question.

I mostly sing acoustic songs. But lately people have been wanting me to come by and sing with their banRAB..mostly different types of rock.

I can sing well however i have trouble at choruses. When i listen to the song to get pitch right, i mean when the original singer sings the chorus, they get into it, almost like mad yelling, yet they are still able to maintain low notes. How do i do this? Someone told me it's an illusion because of the backup vocals, which is probabally the dumbest thing i've ever heard. I don't want to have to force any sound because you know..that would be bad..

I just listened to the sample. I heard a little scream near the last third. But the normal singing is just partially affected by the same methoRAB as if you were going to scream. Normal clean voice singing with a little extra push worked in over time will give you the strength and flexibility that you'd need for the tension you have to use.

Hey guys, I'm new to this and have a quick question:

I don't know where to put this...I hope you guys don't get mad.

I didn't seem to find help searching through files on here, so ppl must not have posted it...I hate when its right there but ppl don't look.

neways, me and my amigo were practicing earlier today for my state's All-State contest. I decided that it would be fun to see how "developed" my range is (im only 16, how developed can it be?) As I kept going higher and higher, I was amazed. I passed the highest note All-State sopranos have EVER sang (C6) and finally quit trying at A#6. That still sounded like a note, because my friend could distinguish some vibrato in it. I would like to know:

How many tenors can sing in the so-called "whistle register". Is that something to be proud of, with no professional lessons?...

If you guys can help in any way, please post or reply to [email protected]

Okays, Apreciate some help here, If you can.

We usually meet up for a practise/jam session, every week or so, but we're seriousloy stuck for vocals. Not that we cant sing, but, we cant hear ourselves =P

So, our usual set up is Two Marshall 15W amps for guitars, and then the drums,

Could anyone suggest what would be the best type of amplifier/PA to buy for microphonication?

Thanks,
Freeze Frame

Anyone think it would be a good idea to make a ...."Vocal Testimony" thread, or something like that? Where vocalists tell us how they got where they are today....and where they plan on going/doing. Or should I just do that in here. Or should....i just not do that at all. Its like late...im weird now. I really want help tho.

1.That 'rasp' wasn't really....rasp, I don't think.
1.Anyway, I tried singing the notes, but i have touble with that. How do i sing them? they arent sung, and its ...really kind of monotone (that's what im hearing anyway).

It's I dunno, 94 Hours by As I Lay Dying. Look for it on www.Launch.com if you dont know how to find it. I can sure yell loud, and...I'm not the greatest singer, but I could do basic stuff. It just doesn't sound like I could 'sing'(as opposed to screaming) any of this.

I'm gonna go read over the hotline again...

Hey Merkaba. I found out i could scream kinda like the black dahlia murder. Is it normal to feel some muscle pain on the sides of your neck. I'm guessing these are neck muscles? Proboably just from facial expressions when trying to get the scream right?

Me aswell, I'm trying to learn how do it for my band, but the only way I can yell is when I do it in a quiet voice, but when I do my usual scream I sound like the guy from Atreyu, like I'm throwing up when I screaming, I kinda like that sound but I'm guessing from what I've heard on the forums that is not a very good technique and not very many people like it.

There are no tricks! Your range is determined from birth. Youre a bass, baritone or tenor if youre male or maybe some 1 percent that is a freak of something else. Usually though, the average person may be missing half of their potential because of bad technique. Go read through the voicehelp hotline. If you dont know what head and falsetto are then you need to work on that and know what they feel like and when youre leaving one for the other. That is priceless. Try to see if you can sing the song without sounding like him. Trying to sound like someone else without knowing your limits and voice first is just begging for trouble and tense incorrect techniques.

voicehelp hotline has a thread or three for you. I just bumped it.

Vibrato from a classical standpoint is a product of relaxed technique. You will have to increase tension a bit to release the vibrato which can help you get more resonance sometimes and help you transition. Probably why your teacher does it, to see if you can do it without crapping out the note with overpush or tension. Dont worry about it. Do what you feel when it comes to your own stuff.

Have you checked out the voicehelp hotline. I have a "coming from the gut" section. Try getting motor boats down pat and you wont have to really ask that question much more.

Dont worry about it. Just relax and of course dont crouch or lean, but dont stand straight up like a board either. Otherwise use your time for concentrating on something else. Now of course style and genre plays alot into this. Thrashing around and crouching is popular in some genres.

Thanks for that Merkaba, now i am just after some advice, this is me now. im ****ty is there any point in even trying to learn how to sing?
I was probably worried when i sang it and stuff but i dont want to record it again because in that time i would have chickened out and decided not to post it :(

*link edited out because it scares the living bajesus out of me :(*

this is where i run away and hide till i get enough courage to come back.
ps im 17

Oh and my vocal style is a bit like Randy Rampage on Alison Hell i.e dirty-clean most of the time with occasional screams.

I'm also getting into screaming a lot lately. Still learning it though.

Singing the notes more/gaining more notes will make those notes seem easier, and make it easier for you to get good tone on them. Also if its high, its not a good idea to pull up your chest voice unless you absolutely want that sound.

To find your head voice do a lip roll thing, and start at the bottom of your range and go up really high keeping the tone decently even through the whole thing. You'll notice you can go really high. And your not in falsetto.

Look up Brett Manning on youtube or google. His speech level singing course is all about range. He has a 5 octave range. Helped me gain a half an octave without even following the program intensively.

What voice type would I PROBABLY be if I can go from about E2-C4, and sometimes C2/D2-E4?

Also I am having trouble with my head voice, I'm not sure if I'm using it or not since the notes C5-E5 are really weak, there's no power whatsoever so I would guess I'm using falsetto. Even a note like G6 sounRAB louder, or just as loud, by doing a sort of inhale. Kinda hard to explain but I hope you understand.

Thanks!

You could, but it's highly advised that you learn to sing before you try to scream. "If you can't sing it, you can't scream it." Very wise saying indeed.

I can sing now, but before I had no singing ability what-so-ever, and I was completely horrible. I learned through singing a long to songs. I have yet to take any singing classes [although I might start to soon]. If you can't sing too well, I would recommend getting some professional classes to help you learn, then later try to take on screaming.

Or if you want to take my route [although, I don't really recommend it], you can just sing a long to some basic songs are learn that way. Just make sure to warm up. [Check out the voice help hotline for warm-up tips.] and also drink a lot of water, and maybe some tea. [It helped me.]

I would say you should atleast do a month [two would be even better] of just vocal exercises and training, then try learning to "throat". Trust me, it will help loaRAB if you learn how to sing first.

Good luck.
