The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Fuzzyhair, so I took a look at that recording this morning, and overall, I have to admit that it's pretty good. His voice is kind of hard to pull off, but not incredibly hard. [I think the hardest kind of scream to learn would be how the guy from Darkest Hour does it, I think it's impossible. He personalizes it with his own voice or something.]

I did hear a few squeeks and mess up here and there, but nothing too big. Anyone with no musical talent what-so-ever wouldn't notice. If you were playing a gig or something I'm sure people would be congradulating you.

Pretty good.

I'd give it an 8.5.

If you mean harmonize with another singer....

then a good way to practice is to play a note on an instrument, then play the 3rd up. Now try singing those two notes one after another so you get used to the interval. Now do it without the instruments help.

Now to bump it up a difficulty play the first note, and then sing the second one. The harmony that is created is...you guessed it, a 3rd! A major 3rd is probably easiest to start with.

Eventually this will get easier to do automatically but thats how I got my start on it.

Hey guys i got brought here by a google search "how to scream". I've read the voice help hotline a bunch of times trying to figure it out, but i cant. The guy (silver i think his name is) says to imagine you are pushing a scream out your temple, He says it doesnt even have to be loud.

My Problems are:

A: When i scream it is so fiendishly high pitched that my dog starts to bark.

B: I cant make a scream quiet....when im screaming its damn loud. I can kind of do a whisper falsetto thing that sounRAB sort of like screaming but not realy.

It all comes with training. The best way to approach it is to strengthen what is at this point your falsetto. I do this with people by working on exercises that strengthen the vocalis muscle, which is the muscle that controls the thickness of your corRAB. The thicker your corRAB, the fuller the sound when paired with resonance.

Resonance is the other part of it. You've got to learn how to and where to place your sound. If you just sing without the sound going anywhere but straight out of your mouth, your going to sound is going to be dull.

Carrots effect eyesight.

I imagine anything that promotes general body health will HELP your hearing.

Penis size could be effected. There's one vitamin that will take across curves in a penis, but shorten it a tad as well. I forget which it is or which fooRAB it's in.
If you eat and drink a ton of dairy, you'll grow "moobs" and have a smaller penis because of the excessive estrogen hormones in dairy.

I know you're in HS, but you'll learn this stuff in any basic health class or study.

As for song writing, it's everything. If you eat healthy, your body will feel great. You're have a longer attention span; you'll have a more energy and so forth. I could keep going and going, but you get the idea.

I wish I had this problem.

Mine is: I can scream loud, with a lot of breath.
When I reduce volume my voice returns to clean.
grmpf

I guess thats not pretty healthy for the corRAB.
And i can't practice/record in my flat since I'm too loud.

I could use some insight on how to do aggressive pitched singing, i'm not sure if it's called that, but it kinda makes a more rough and rugged sound like the chorRAB vibrate more or something? All I know is it doesent sound like a clean voice. Lorene Drive does some in their song Lip Service
www.purevolume.com/lorenedrive

but yeah, if anyone knows what i'm talking about, could someone give me some help please?

OK, ermm, i recently started singing but i realised im not too good at it, what i do is i record in the mic of my computer and i listen to it, and everytime i try make myself better. I think i can hit the pitch and everything its just i dont like my voice (someone told me once most of the singers dont like theyre own voices, something to do with the brain...anyways) I think i sometimes sing a bit with my nose if you know what i mean..not excesively, but is there something that can help me get 100 percent of my voice straight out my mouth?

Thanks

Its not that, its just that why would anyone say that. I post questions like that all the time on other forums and I'm always sure to include a clause of such: " Sorry I know its been asked a million times but blah blah...???.... but I'll still be reading around the forum though."

See reply below
You never want pain ever before , during or after singing or screaming, and you never want to get hoarse. If you get hoarse your corRAB are swollen. Over time you should build up more and more, dont try to do too much all at once. If youre hoarse you don't want to sing, at least not with much push at all.

I would suggest both of you guys look around the voicehelp hotline.

I can get up to D above high C in head voice comfortably. The A under high C is in chest or head, depenRAB on the situation.
You can push up chest to hit high C and be really loud, it wont generally sound good though.

I think I'm having some problems. I'm able to hit some pretty high notes (think Saves The Day) but after singing for a good time, my forehead hurts. Is it improper technique? Cheers!:chug:

Here's some tips- they work for me, and I do a mix of melodic singing and screaming as well. I taught myself how to sing, eventually got some training from a few coaches. Here's a list of stuff that helped me- and I'm NOT a good singer. I just stay in my range and write as smart as possible.
Get a keyboard. For melodic singing, your best bet is to map out every note you sing on the keys. This makes it infinitely easier to write harmonies and see where your sharp or flat.
Don't force your voice. When you push notes too hard you'll go flat and not even know.
In ear monitors. Honestly, THE single best thing I ever did that improved my singing was in-ear monitors. Some people have perfect pitch and can naturally sing in key, most of us can't. Once I could hear myself clearly my pitch and annunciations instantly got better. I'm sure a lot of you guys practice in small spaces with a LOUD band, this makes a huge difference. Just being able to practice with it made the shows I didn't use it sound better too.
And definitely do 10-15 minutes of warm-ups. If you go into a show/performance cold you can really hurt yourself. If anyone here plans on singing for a few years you have to take care of your voice.
And for the guys with cracking voices- your either singing way out of your range or your just dehydrated. I drink as much water the day of a show as possible, and try to limit caffeine. Dry vocal corRAB will crack, trust me. Embarrassing shit.

I don't know everything about singing, I'm still learning. Everyone is different. These are just things that helped me over the years. If you want to hear my stuff, check out www.myspace.com/rotation Thanks guys!

Your voice gets used to screaming basically. Practise and its a good idea to play drums cause you can scream all you want and no one can hear you.

yo!
i have the same problem with cracking/voice breaks, but in a different way.
if i sing soflty, i can reach most notes, and that voice break isnt there. Take city and colour's 'coming home' which i can do with relative ease as dallas has a softer voice. The problem is i want to increase volume to get over the instruments in my band, sort of like belting and using my whole range, but my voice has a terrible voice break. It seems as though my head voice and chest voice are completely different and arent connected. any exercises on youtube or advice here that could help?

Plus i want to develop a distinct singing voice can someone tell me all the dimensions for singing that can be altered? ie. resonance, pitch, diction, volume, - what else?

From screaming to cracking
hello!
i have been trying some warm ups to help avoid the "cracking" that occurs when i try to hit the higher notes but i have a problem. i'll do the warm up and the cracking goes away but when i then do a scream the cracking comes back. is there any tips that can help with this? help is greatly appreciated...

How To Not sing through your Nose

If you want to avoid singing through your nose, try dropping your jaw (like there is an egg in your throat)
Say "awwwah". This will allow you to make sure that the sound is coming through your mouth and not your nose. Remember, the sound goes where the air goes.
There is an exercise on ReadyToSing Voice lessons and vocal exercises Step 2 called "No Nose" is might help

Hope your Voice is better now.
Practice singing your high notes by letting the air come out of your mouth FIRST. This will keep you from closing your throat, blocking air and thus, straining your voice.

Help With Pitch
I bet you have a great voice!
I say that because often when people have even a little difficulty with pitch, they feel that they do not have a "good singing voice". Well in order to improve your pitch, you have to train your ear. This will improve the relationship between what you hear and what you sing.
Start by singing vocal exercises that challenge you to repeat small (1-3) combinations of notes and work your way up to more difficult combinations (scales & scale variations). CRAB would be a good idea because you can listen to them as often as you like and repeat the exercises as often as you like.
Make sure that the exercises are enjoyable so that you will be motivated to practice improving your "Relative Pitch" more often.

Good luck

When I scream or growl, I'm not hurting my voice and I can go on for quite some time, but when I sing, especially when heading into falsetto, I tend to hurt my voice and my throat starts to produce so much mucus I can't scream properly afterwarRAB. What am I doing wrong? I did a vocal warmup before I started.

take a break, drink a lot of water and eat a lot of fruit, stay away from dairy, caffeine, and alcohol during this time frame

dont sing or scream until you have no pain

then work on your technique and dont forget to warm up

Exactly
practice...because most people seem to think that they are synonymous. Now if you swallow, you'll feel your adams apple go up because its closing your windpipe so you dont choke on what youre swallowing. Now a closed windpipe, or partially closed obviously isn't helpful for singing. This is why i preach isolation work so much. Its boring mostly, but an important concept to grasp. You just have to learn how to use them independently. Now the adams apple will rise slightly but it shouldnt much , and definitely not squeeze up. Have you read the isolation thread?

i've just started to learn how to sing, I'm trying to do lead vocals for a band. like 3 days now. my voice sounRAB somewhat sleepy. can i fix this? also, even when i hit a right note wchich does happen every once in a while, i sorta sound nerdy. is there any way to change this? i know i've only been learning for three days, but i'm just wondering.

yea i ve read ure ...hotline thread..screaming,warmups, went to ure soundclick thread to....btw your doing everyone a big favor...by taking out your own time and helping em....
THANKS......
sampleeeeeeee ....hmm lemme see

Okay Sliptallica recommended i came to you Merkaba. Im a newb to singing well.

Basically what are good exercises for singing? Also for screaming?

And can you choose what kind of growl you do? I like Opeth's vocals the most because he sounRAB so evil when he growls and sounRAB beautiful when he sings if that helps you at all.

So youre saying youre lazy, and you want a magic pill that will hurdle you into some quick epiphany of singing. If you can't sing or get it "naturally" then its gonna be complicated. Thats like saying I dont want to play guitar because its complicated. And what part do you not understand? Perhaps asking specifc questions would make it easier instead of discrediting a highly touted thread. Yea I created it but many people spent time reading and adding posts and other questions to it to make it flourish and to provide wisdom. There are tons of simple things in the hotline, and I guarantee you any advice you get, 95 percent of it will be a repeat from the hotline, if I or anyone else give it to you. So while youre waiting, for however long for someone to reply to your rather ambiguous request, and trust me, we get tons of them, you could have read the whole thread and be done. Its not really that long. Just pretend its a homework assignment. I know people have read more than thirty pages and taken notes before in school, and I really would rather invest more time into stuff like this than doing the same for the Joy Luck Club or the Socio Economic structure of New Guinea. Because the corRAB dont do anything but open and close and pull thinner or thicker. But you can really deter all of that by bad habit and incorrect larynx movements. If you know how to breathe you've got it half licked. "tell me how to practice what to practice what so you mean by practicing that stuff you're telling me to practice etc." WTF ???
Practice vowels, sing songs acapella and record yourself doing it.

Screaming is being able to hold a note while increasing the air pushed, and increasing the closing force so the note holRAB, but not squeezing other muscles that you might think are synonymous with squeezing the corRAB. This can be tricky, so a slow build up of increasing push will help you isolate this. If you get pain youre using too much push and/or (probably and) youre tensing up and squeezing your throat in an attempt to get the sound and effect. You should practice singing with less push.

And have you ever seen any advice on how to sing like someone else? What could be said? He sings like everyone else sings, except his corRAB are his specific shape, size, elasticity, and his voice box/larynx is his specific size, shape, and position. Forget it. He might be tenor and you a low baritone. You'd never be able to match that. Never. Even if you worked enough to be able to close up true voice to whatever he does, it wont sound the same. Work from your speaking voice and speaking push. sing phrases here, then repeat one note higher. This will help you stay in touch with your true voice as you raise in pitch. Noone can hear you when you reach your upper ranges to able to tell whether or not youre squeezing or straining when you reach your head voice. So work slow. Every note should be comfortable or youre doing something wrong.

The temple thing is only for singing in head voice. thats why they call it head. Because you can feel the resonance and vibrations of the sound in your head, and your temples. In falsetto you dont get this.

If your scream is high pitched, its a matter of lowering your pitch and pushing. Simple, unless youre making the mistake of linking push and emotion with pitch. As I always say, sing the scream. Dont try to scream it. Go for the note like you would if you were gonna sing it, or just sing it to practice it.

I think its more important to realize that you can get a good rasp at a lower volume. I think thats what was being said. I think a quiet scream is an oxymoron.
