The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Yeah but it'd always be great if I could actually hit the high notes of the vocals I listen to (Freddy Mercury, Bono...etc)

Well right now I'm pretty much just trying to sing those notes as best as I could even though most of the time it comes out like **** and my voice gets so cracked up, so I try not to exceed my limit cause I fear damage.

Another thing I do now is (kinda weird) but try to always talk in a higher pitch, but not like squeaky like a girl.

I found out what my problem was. I wasn't having a bad singing day, I just didn't warm up correctly/long enough. Warming up can go a long way.

The only thing that concerns me, is sometimes my voice cracks on the higher pitch screams. Now, duh you would say this is normal and it takes practice, but I used to be able to hit these kind of notes like a mofo. It was my best kind of screams, now I can't hit them quite as well as I used to.

My band wants me to have more lower pitched screams, which I can do, just not as good, so when I practice things, and I don't hear exactly what I want to hear, then I go and try my high pitch and my voice is cracking, it's giving me the impression that I am turning into a bad screamer.

What should I do? Merk?

I'm not sure how to do it, but I can say i'm sure he's doing it in a healthy way, he may have recently developed a node and had to have surgery to have it taken out, but he did it for like....6 years? without developing one. So his node was probally because of excessive touring/smoking, because he's a huge drug addict.

And yeah his screams are sick ;)

Most tenors are classified as being able to sing the c above middle C. Tenor High C....without forcing the note and of course without falsetto.

Trying to sing in the tenor range with vocal resonance will teach you bad habits and lead to probable complications over the long haul.

Lots of squeezing in there. Go for the note first. Try to sing the song cleanly first. Then cleanly but hard....I would like to hear a sample of that.

Ok, so I'm the screamer in my band thats just getting started. I'm sure you've prolly talkabout this stuff a thousand times in this post but thats alot of readin for a college kid! lol. I need some serious help with my screaming though. I was practicing tonight and my voice was getting soar, not unexpected for 1 not warming up and going ****ing insane and not knowing the proper way to scream. But then halfway through practice my back started killing me everytime i screamed. Like my kidneys were going to burst!!! This i know is a huge problem so I did some searching and this site came up! If you guys could some up the jist of what I should do and what serious things im doing wrong i would love to know!!! We got a gig coming up and i don't wanna die before or during it!! My band has a pure volume site where you can hear my attempts at screaming. Worst Love song don't listen to cuz thats not how i really scream. If you listen to the chorus of stiletto to the heart you'll hear me. www.purevolume.com/armsofanother
I really need help cuz our gig is coming soon!!!! So a summary and a bunch of pointers will really help!!! THANKS!!!

Its gonna go up a bit. Worry about the sound first. Try posting a sample. What type of note are you talking about here. the more you try to go outside of your natural range the harder it will be.

hey, when I sing while I'm playing guitar I think I sound like a good singer...but if I tape myself and play it back I hear myself as singing very nasally and not too pleasing to my ear. I'm singing in the right key and everything...I just don't like the way my voice sounRAB. Is this normal or does that mean I'm just a lousy singer and is there something I can do to fix that? Also, how come the voice sounRAB so much different when you hear yourself normally than it does on tape? Thanks a lot for the help...

Very cool. Thanks.
So my advice to the other guy earlier about pushing out a deuce wasn't far off then. Cool.

I'll try to post another vid this weekend.

Speaking of deuces...uhhh... I gotta go...

Merk, I've been practicing my harsh vocals a ton over the holiday break and a few weeks ago I got it down perfect tech wise.

Another way for someone to easily learn the false chorRAB is to sigh, then sigh heavily and then ultimately apply that into a vocal. After that, just forcing the access air up. It's almost impossible to close your throat.

I still use my "true chorRAB" for the banshee wails, haha. But that's about as open as my throat can be and I don't do those much so my chorRAB will never get hurt obviously.

I can do vox for like a couple hours a day! taking a day or two off when needed and it's effortless. I just had to control the push better.

Anyways, thanks for your guides. I used them quite a bit in my learning vocals.

btw, word of advice for kiRAB begging to learn screaming or growling. You'll know when you do it right, believe me. When you do it right, it's effortless, painless and you can do it all night long! Instead of soreness, pain or stratchy voice and such.

Ok I read a few of the posts (not all of course), I'll post in what I need help with.

Basically I am trying to sing as much alike as Freddie Mercury as my voice can allow. Thankfully I already have a naturally wide vocal range (I'll thank my mum on that) and am singing all the way from the low E string on a guitar to the 12th fret on the high E as my highest note.
I've never had any vocal lessons, which is something I should probably consider, but I like teaching myself, so for now I'll work with this :thumb:

My problem is that mainly emulating Freddie is a very hard task, as his voice is simply very powerful, I need to get more volume, more control of my vibrato, greater expression and definitely more ease when going through notes, it is very noticeable that I'm making a large effort to try and imitate his sound often, not sounding very natural.

More on those later, right now my focus is on getting that "growl" sound of his, as heard on many of his songs (off the top of my head Another one bites the dust and the chorus of Show must go on are the prime examples). A good musician friend of mine suggested that I need to shout more to get used to the power of my voice, so I've been trying that for a while. It has worked a bit, I can now make my voice feel as if it is coming out through a point behind my noise (giving it a very nasal sound :p ) and use a little saliva to make it growl a bit, but it doesn't sound natural at all.

I'll try recording an example later today when I have a little more intimacy in the room, the background noise is deafening at the moment
Great site by the way, was checking at some of the other threaRAB just a while ago and really helpful stuff in here. I'll be saving this one to favourites hehe.

Cheers,
Ring0.

P.S.

From what I know that isn't a good idea, you'll shut off your higher notes and come off aproximately octave higher than you intend to with no control whatsoever. The damage might be permanent too as it becomes an involuntary thing on your muscle memory to use them :s
Then again I don't really know hehe.

There's a couple of ways to go about with this.. One is to practise your basslines untill you can play them in your sleep, another is to start with thinking the worRAB to the song inside your head, in the correct timing, while playing. And then start humming the melody while playing.. And work on it like this till you can sing it and play at the same time.. And another less used approach is learning the singing part till you could do it in your sleep.. heheh... Just try and see what works best for you

Hey, I have a question for anyone who can help me (Mekarba?)
Well.. I've been playing guitar for 3 years now and I've decided to start singing, I've always wanted to but always found so hard to, I just cant seem to understand how I can hear someone sing and then recall what note that is, that is just crazy to me, but now I'm trying to learn again, I'm 16 now.. figured if I start now, even though I suck, I might get better with time..

Well.. my question is.. what's the best way of starting to learn? like REALLY basics! like starting from scratch, like someone who's really bad at hearing notes too.. I'm gonna get into vocal lessons soon when I get enough money but I'm wondering if there's anything out there I can practice to already start warming up and all, maybe I can play some scales on the guitar and try to match my voice? or something?

Any help is REALLY appreciated

~Wags

Is there any sort of indicator that I am over working it because I have only just started trying to sing and I have a very weak voice and I’m not sure how far I should be pushing it?

Umm I was wondering how to add a more raspy tone to my voice. I know you covered raspy fallsetto screams, Merkaba, but I just wanted to know how to add rasp to my normal singing voice.

This is most often a side effect of straining. Try as hard as you can to keep your larynx down when you sing high notes, and don't get louder as you go up to them.
