The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Those other recording with Waking The Cadaver are just messin around lol. Listen to the Inhaling Screams. I need suggestions on those. I will do more

Hi

I'm relatively new to singing (I'm 15). I have a pretty good and clear voice but I can't seem to get it to sound raspy and cool like my favourite banRAB (Alice in Chains and Soundgarden). I've posted on some other forums but I can't get a good answer. One guy told me to use my diaphragm. I'm not sure how to do that.

If anyone could give me tips on how to sing like Chris Cornell or Layne Staley, that would be great. Anything past the "go to a teacher nub" really helps :)

Thanks

Well I know the answers to your question. This seems to be just like the dog whisperer. He always enRAB up just walking the dog. (its a tv show btw.) Mainly it's the best and only thing to do with a dog. So take the dog whispers advice and use it for your growling. Just sing cleanly more often. Warm up more. This will help a tenfold. Also check out the zen of screaming by melissa cross. I think im gonna buy it once I get some $$$.

Well not to go against your teacher but I wouldnt say that you need larger amounts of air to achieve a good falsetto. At least it doesnt need to feel that way. I think thats a misleading thing to say, if thats what they said. The shape of the mouth can cause flatness in vowels and in the case of E can actually change the vowel altogether. Its hard to talk about palet on the internet. And are you referring to flatness in your falsetto notes or in general? Keep the bottom jaw loose. Getting differences in tone is a hard subject without hearing a sample or knowing exactly what youre looking for. Have you discussed this idea with your teacher and do they agree you lack tone or something? If its falsetto, don't over push it. Theres a middle of the road where you can kinda back off and achieve good clarity and tone but it involves alot less push than most people think....unless youre training for some christ cornell type falsetto.

Okay. I drank a lot of water today. Not quite a gallon, but a lot. I pissed for like 3 minutes in the school bathroom. 'twas quite a show. My throat is feeling a little better today, even though I know it will take time to heal. I'm hoping it will feel better in the next couple of days. Thanks for your help.

Shouldnt take long to get somewhere. Just pay attention to yourself and dont overthink. Its ok to miss notes and if youre gonna miss them, working on transition and bridge breaks is THE time to do it! Back off of the push and volume and go for a feeling of rolling, or flipping. It will be a shift in throat musculature....very minute. And dont search for it. Once you've got it down you'll know why its called flipping or rolling into the next register. Lovely.I'm sure youre glissing...and dont forget to do them from highest to low.

Its really just the tonality/timbre of your voice that tells if your a tenor. The fact that you can sing that low in the classical world probably would take you out of running for being a tenor, but it really doesnt matter in anything but classical music.

The size of the adams apple is usually indicative of how deep someons voice is going to be, but not always.Ive seen people with huge adams apples that have Michal Jackson like voices. Yes, the adams apple itself grows but it does in everyone, and its just the size of the corRAB themselves that cause the lowering as you get older.

Its cool that you can hit a soprano C, but if there is a lot of tension you might want to not be doing it so much until you can train properly to get it. You might want to check into getting Jaime Vendera's Raise Your Voice 2; the technique in there would be perfect because if you can hit a Soprano C now and above, you can probably go much higher and it will become more comfortable too.

hi all,ive been looking at a lot of vocalist forums lately and everyone seems to be claiming to have amazing ranges and they never actually prove it as when asked to show recordings they suddenly dissapear,so id thought id show a part of mine over 2 octaves from C3 to C5 which i recorded on my phone 5 mins ago so the quality might not be that good but you should be able to hear it ok at least. i just did a simple 'ah' at each pitch in a relaxed voice and sustained it for 6-8 seconRAB or so, although i can go down to E2 and all the way up to E5(thought id get that in there,he he) i thought this would be more benificial as a sort of warm up,by the way im the lead vocalist in a bon jovi tribute band and i like all classic rock music. why not have a go at the recordings yourself, have fun people.:smoke: firstly the C3, a bit of phone gargle on this one, sorry guys! http://s41.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2455PYKKSC96R3B6BLF97084W4

Thx Auz I will try that

merk, my throat wasnt sore, but i was pretty congested to the point where I couldnt get enough air to sing much higher than my speaking voice, and i drink a decent amount of caffeine but i havent smoked since I got sick and the other stuff, havent touched it...

I like the way you describe that. Im going to try to think of it like that next time I'm playing that song or one with similar notes/phrases.

Thanks for the feedback.

vibrato is a by-product of relaxed isolated singing and proper breath support(diaphragm....yawn). If youre tensing the larynx or overblowing you can chalk it up. It really is rather independent of strength but directly related to proper technique. Practice Ah's. Can't get more open and relaxed than that. Go limp(relax everything, including your eyebrows and your asshole), drop the bottom jaw a bit like its on a hinge, and hold it at speaking pitch. Wonder why your doctor tells you to say ah and not E? Because it naturally relaxes the larynx and opens your throat up...so he can see in.

opposite. It gets stronger. Read that as " At a given note" So say if you have the strength and or setup(if youre a tenor) to sing a c 5 in true voice then at d5 you have to use falsetto...then if you work to be able to close up a d5 in a decent true voice then naturally you're gonna be able to use a better falsetto for that d5 now if you so chose. If you can hold the corRAB together tighter, for a given note, its easier to let them not be so together and tighter right?:thumb:

I second that.

relax, warmup, relax further, and practice, and warm down. Most questions like this are identical in concept to "How do I increase my bench press". I mean we can go on and on about little catchy names and terminology but what it all boils down to is working out with good form. And if you didnt know whether or not you had good form you would either research your ass off or hire a personal trainer.

Oh, it's about growling.. ahg, I hate growling. But if that's your thing, that's cool. I haven't listened to it yet, because I don't like to do anything vocal related whenever my mom is home. But I probably will, anyways.

Hmm. Do you know of any tutorials that focus more on a Norma Jean type scream? That's kind of what I'm going for.

Push with your gut, not your throat! It seems that you're really straining to get loud or high some times. Practice breathing, too, it seems that you don't have much control over your voice. Use your gut!

age is going to change your voice regardless, especially for young people and their range. If youre just now 15 expect it to change again possibly. Keep practicing and I'm sure you'll gain most back. The good thing is that the voice usually gets stronger as you age...to a certain point.

Um, I think this is the right place to ask. Anyway, My vocals have started to come under criticism lately. I do mostly death metal (harsh vox) but also acoustics (clean vox). Can anybody listen to our demo ( http://www.myspace.com/forthisibleed ) and tell me what exactly they think about the vox on both the acoustic and hardcore vox and how they think it could be improved?
