I used to, but it's so harsh on your voice that you have to be completely rested for like 2 weeks after doing it for like one show.

Inhaled pigs are the way to go sparingly.

Also, don't try to do stuff like Bear from See You Next Tuesday, unless you want your voice cracking constantly.

You warm down to return your corRAB, relatively, back to their original shape and length, etc. This also helps reduce the tendency and need for mucus production.

The basics are to start at your highest falsetto and slide down to your lowest note. I like to do all vowels a few times, ending with E. Then start in your basic speaking voice and slide down to your lowest and hold. All vowels ending with e. Then just hold low vowels...ending with E. Then just hold low E's. If I feel like I really need it I will do mid and low E's here and there throughout the rest of day or night.

its ok to reach for your lowes lowest. But for the most part you want it to be a good singing quality. Not a meditational mantra....unless you can get it cleanly. You know how when you go really low it gets kinda raspy? I would say if you want to go that low then do them at the begining of each vowel slide, ending with a few more repetitions at a good singing quality low.

For the most part this shouldnt take more than five minutes, unless you feel you need it. At the very least just dont abruptly stop vocalizing. Even normal talking is better than a complete stop.

You can sing perfectly fine with anything, as long as its not a vocal cord area problem like laryngitis.

get a humidifier for your room.
get more sleep
drink more every day
eat better
i'm pretty sure zinc and vitamin C are good when your sick

before the show, drink a lot of water that day. Breathe in steam. Warm up really good.

i have the same problem. our band wants to do money, and i can't sing and bass to that at the same time, but theres such a massive solo if i dont play bass then ill be sitting around for ever

I dunno if you guys can help me out...my choir concert is next week and right now my voice is too screwed up to sing properly. I have to constantly clear my throat and days where I can sing my regular (healthy) range are few and far between. It's been like this for about a month now.

I've looked into stuff that's bad for your singing voice and I think I'm smoking too much, drinking too much, and also drinking too much coffee. I also read that clearing your throat is also bad which I do constantly because of smoking.

So here's the thing, is there anything I can do to reverse all this bad stuff I've done to my voice by next weeks concert? Like I could not smoke or drink etc but would my voice be back to normal by next week? Because it's been screwed up for weeks.

For one youre probably over pushing your screams. Turn up the mic/gain a bit. You have an acoustic instrument that neeRAB to be amplified properly/accordingly. Forget the male ego and the idea that your screaming voice has to be a 100% force. It should be 80% most of the time...maybe even less depending on how much you scream. That is if you want to do it for any length of time.

I disagree. I suggest you shut it up and talk as little as possible for at least two days. No whispering, its worse for you. Get plenty of water and nutrition as youre really in a state of repair(and when are we not). Then do some mid voice E's in speaking pitchs sliding lower and back up to mid voice, up and down on one note and breath. You probably have corRAB that are/were very swollen. If you keep working them you'll get nodes or worse. Also you could have done another popular thing which is partially paralyze a nerve. You will do yourself a service by reading this whole thing over the next while or two.

Hey merk or anyone else who knows what they're talking about

I'm lead vox for a metal band now, and there is a lot of screaming going on. Now I have my screams down technique-wise to where i get a good sound and can do them all day with no pain. However, my singing voice gets real airy and breathy and I completely lose my falsetto. The airy tone isnt too much of a problem, since it sounRAB good for certain things, but the falsetto is really causing problems. My falsetto scream is my best assett and after about 20 minutes, i can get the sound kinda but no power. Am I doing something wrong or do I need more conditioning for my corRAB?

yeah they are pretty tough lyrics to get down. I didn't really study them and i read off the page for the most part. Thanks for your input I appreciate it!

/gets sarcasm

To not double post, when I scream or growl, i feel like my stomach muscles are working out. Is this pushing from the gut?

I'm having a hell of a time developing a more raspy metalcore/emo type scream. I can death growl rather easily but every time I try to metalcore scream I tear my throat up. Anybody got any advice on how to develop this technique?

Hey umm whenever I try to do growling I develop some mucous. Is this normal? Also after I do growls for about an hour my voice seems a little bit hoarse. I am not really pushing that hard. I pretty much do it at a loudness of spoken voice. Am I doing any damage or should I be okay? I know that any pain is bad, so I decided to ask you guys. oh btw i am trying lamb of god styled stuff, so It may not be "growling" but its definately low.
EDIT: Okay I just got back from doing some lamb of god stuff for about 20 minutes straight. I don't have as much mucous. I think its because I tried to controll my push and I have a little but not as much. The back of my throat sorda hurts. umm is this because i just started?

okay, so i have a problem: I CAN'T SING. i have no idea what i'm doing wrong. when i sing to myself, i think it actually sounRAB fine, but since you hear your own voice differently than the others around you, i dont realize it sounRAB like total ****. merkaba, you've told me before that i have no breath support. well, i worked on that, and it still sounRAB like total ****. but i think i MAY have found the problem. it might be my tone? but yeah, i just dont think i have the right voice to be a singer. oh well, merk and others, here's a couple recordings. i have to warn you, though, they're total ***:

www.myspace.com/faultytheband

PLEASE help me! We don't really have anyone else except the bass player, and no matter what, he wont be loud enough!!! so i'm almost all we have to work with.

and another time, I KNOW THOSE RECORDINGS SUCK! you DON'T have to tell me!!!

I have a problem in that I have a low range voice and need to sing a couple of high range songs for my band. Is it possible to find a way of extending your range or shouold I just abandon the idea completely? Also, having a low voice I also have a problem in that the tone and qwuality of sound I produce is too brash or simply too plain. Sometimes it can produce a nice texture but only within a certain small pitchrange. Once ive left that I can sing, but not without losing most of the quality of sound that I can otherwise get. Any pointeers?

Cheers

Your throat is sore because it's injured. And when you're singing, sometimes it's best NOT to cover up pain, or you'll just hurt your voice worse. The pain is there are a warning.

Water is important, though, to keep your "parts" hydrated :)

P.S. "I agree with Kristina, but I always do because she knows her stuff." Thanks, Merkaba!
