The Official Tool Thread

That was the most insightful and thoughtful post I've seen in an age. You really spoke the truth there. This thread now belongs to you...

Tool fans really do go crazy over MJK as a lyricist, and Carey is very highly regarded among drummers.

But Jones and Chancellor get very little credit, am I the only one who thinks Jones is actually a really good guitarist?

Hey hey dont misquote me, by no means am calling anything of theirs weak, I merely meant in my hurable opinion Undertow is a 4.95/5 whereas the rest of their LP's are solid 5/5.

Apart from the fact that bassists are almost always overlooked when they're not a focal point either musically or otherwise, I'd say the only significantly overrated person in Tool is Maynard, and that's just because a lot of people can't see past a lead singer by default. It's Adam's band in more ways than one and he's probably underrated by people who don't know that, but that's to be expected.

Me personally, if I absolutely had to rate on individual merit, I'd go:
Adam > Danny > Maynard > Justin.... but I wouldn't. Because I know that there's only one person in that group who could be replaced without destroying the band. He's on the end.

Green Day, Coldplay, Justin Tiraberlake, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West (for Graduation) are all exceptional, then?

Yeah yeah, Danny Carey is a good drummer. I never discredited him. I'm pointing out why I don't like Tool, why would I focus solely on a drummer who we all know is great?

I never said that complexity makes a song great. However, technicality is relative in metal, and Tool tries to accentuate on complexity, but they aren't as complex as people like to think - that's the point I'm making. Length is relative to monotony and repetition.

There was no point to even bringing up a negative vibe that you perceived, some people might take offense, or something, and it might lead to a battle of ad hominems.

Tool isn't very imaginative or cinematic or creative at all. Yeah, they make tons of revolutionary statements, like "Christianity is bad." Plus, they sound like a more commercially acceptable version of Isis, or Neurosis, you know, minus the grit and rawness and power, and plus a "deep and brooding" tone of melancholy. I'll never understand why people think, like, "monotony = deep!"

Please, don't continue to use arguments like, "they received awarRAB!" or "they're still going strong!" to support why they're good or creative.

In my opinion you shouldn't download their albums, instead make the extra effort to buy them! That's the true way to really appreciate their music and art!

I like how the reason most of us seem to like Tool is because of songs like "Rosetta Stoned" while at the same time that's why a lot of people don't like Tool.

Tool are coming to Australia again, eiowhr8923471928qwdhjiqwyad7812edu!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so, so, so, so pumped. Please let me get tickets! I HAVE to see them live!

As much as I love Tool, i do think, at times that Maynard can be *ahem* a bit of a Tool... then again i once heard the guy praising Peter Gabriel's Passion album, which I thoroughly never expected and that made me respect him a gazillion times more...
