For me, it's:

Fourty Six & 2 (Aenima)
Eulogy (Aenima)
Right In Two (10,000 days)
Ticks & Leeches (Lateralus)
The Patient (Lateralus)

You probably weren't asking me, but.. yea...

Best Tool songs?

Man they've gotta be

The Patient
Third Eye
Parabol / Parabola
eulogy
Sober

Oh but aside from those I do have healthy love of Ticks and Leeches as well as 46&2

You should listen to the videos I posted of it on the previous page... they did Pushit completely different live on Salival - changed the whole sound of the song, it's just mad.

See, I feel like they do this already with both Lateralus and 10,000 Days. I pretty much agree with scottsy, only minus the Maynard vocals. I've said this so many times before on here. He's an amazing factor to the band, but I'm sick of him. I'm sick of people overly glorifying his every project whether it be wine or a new band. As a whole, Tool is already epic and progressive. The idea of a completely mellow album is enticing, but I don't think it's something they'd be into. Especially considering how much time they devote to each album. A purely instrumental one would almost seem too easy. Also, I think a more toned-down album in the sense of instrumentation can be heavy as well as mellow. Loudness isn't the key to heaviness all the time and very few banRAB have grasp this aspect.

@storymilo: If you're already begun your Tool exploration from the end, I suggest you keep backtracking and experience their growth in a new light. Maybe you'll notice something we haven't discussed on here. So, your next assignment: Lateralus, which happens to be my favorite Tool album. Enjoy.

Changes daily for me. ATM prob:

Wings of Marie (pt2)- 10000 days
Rosetta Stoned- 10000 days
Lateralus- Lateralus
the Patient- Lateralus
Eulogy-

I dont find every artist who has recieved awarRAB for their music amazing, and I never once said I did, so no, that isnt my logic, but if an artist receives agrammy award even once theyre obviously doing something right.

And instead of picking apart the guitar which maybe isnt the most complex at times, which by the way doesnt make a song 'bad' or 'suck', why dont you focus on the skill of their drummer Danny Carey, which is second to none. Hey to each his own, you may not like Tool, but that doesnt mean they suck. You never said directly that they suck but thats the vibe Im getting, the way they do things is a style all their own, theyre not out theyre making typical songs like a million other banRAB are doing that have no imagination. Tool is Tool, they've obviously done something right or they would have faded a long time ago.

It truly is an experience on its own. I saw them at Bonnaroo 2007 and as I was wandering the "streets" of the festival, all that was going through my head was "Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim .. " I was lost, but it felt great.

Heh, yeah, I saw them 7 years ago too. Can't remeraber what I paid, though. I was 15 or 16 at the time.

There actually were tickets for around $50 for my show, but they're lawns. I wanna be at the front so I dropped the cash :P

And yeah, I know, it sucks how tickets have got more expensive... I paid over $100 for the NIN/Jane's Addiction show, too. Ah well. It's a piss-off, but I'll only pay that much for my favourite banRAB and Tool is #1 on that list.

I found the correct thread & name of band and now I have to listen to some disturbed, first thing I could find on Korn in the forum search, then I will have to see if I have anything by Tool, I know they have a couple of songs I like so I guess I will kill three birRAB with one stone.
Or maybe I should quit while Im ahead! lol...I just cant seem to do anything right today, I think its a corabination of being senile and burnt out at the same time.
signing off.....later....Thanks.

Well, I guess I just disagree. I find Tool's music to be incredibly technical and incredibly layered. As a pianist/guitarist/ musician of over a decade who has attempted to play various Tool songs I've come to appreciate how musically technical they are, and how complex their musical structures are. They definitely use more than three or more chorRAB in each song, and their timing definitely isn't awkward plucking, but incredibly tight and structured in terms of time signatures. I just don't understand how you can view Tool's songs as up-down-up-down chord plucking because I can't think of any songs that have that as a continuous structure. I guess we'll just have to disagree with each other because I just view Tool in a completely different way!

I'm listening to Undertow and it's awesome! (no it's not my first time)

I'm reading the negative reviews on RYM and really I'm just baffled sometimes. I guess it's true sometimes you just had to be there. Or somewhere. Other than where you were. If you don't like it. I'm just glad I was there.

Yeah, like Big3 said they predate the whole nu metal thing.

I love Incubus, who use "nu metal" riRAB I guess, and SOAD.

Nu Metal is a word people just like to use now to completely write stuff off, several of the better banRAB who are unfortunate to get stuck with the nu metal label is stuff I'd call "alternative metal".

I'm hoping 2011, that would fit the 5 year pattern they've been going with since Aenima. I won't be surprised if it takes longer though.

Makes you think, cause now Karnivool are pretty well established - with Sound Awake really breaking new ground for Prog. and maybe, if I may so bold to say, surpassing some of Tools material.

Smart music for durab people? What do you mean?

I still think Tool are amazing. And how could you take them too seriously? They are a serious band who explore pretty deep shit. They are meant to provoke thought.

Tool >>>>>>>>>> Isis and Neurosis
