The Official David Bowie Thread

Workman competence is one thing. When it comes to actual ability on instruments though, talent in my mind means spectacular.

Your standarRAB are way too high.

Bellamy shows some very impressive chops as a guitarist, keyboardist AND a singer. To say he has no talent is ridiculous. So he chooses to play music thats hardly anything more than a throwback to 70s art rock, you're basically saying you don't like his style of music therefore he's not talented.

Theres a lot of music I hate but I can still appreciate that theres talent that goes into it. I can't stand most progressive metal music like Dream Theater but I appreciate that a lot of talent goes into it. More so than a lot of music I like.

Hell, musicianship-wise Journey were insanely talented, Steve Perry and Neal Schon especially, and just because I hate their music dosen't take away from that, talent should always be appreciated even if you don't like the music.

Well i'd say it's one of the weaker albums of his 70's output definitely, but it's weak out of a very strong bunch. I know the critics didn't like it as they thought it was just cheap soul but there's songs on there (title track, Somebody Up There Likes Me) that soar along and build up brilliantly, and i've already declared my liking for Fame.

Spiffing.

Okay so I never use that saying. My mum was born in England but thats no excuse. I do not use that saying, just this once, enjoy it while you can, I'll never say it again.

Hey Crowquill buddy 'ol pal, wanna gift me those two albums?

True, I hadn't really thought of it that way. With that in mind it is very, very arabitious.

Best track off side 2 imo, by a stretch, is Warszawa

Is it just me or does the intro to Song for Bob Dylan sound EXACTLY like Ronnie Van Zandt?

Wonder when Pronounced... was released...

EDIT: ****, Oh You Pretty Things just came on random...I'm gonna have to concur with you, but Bewlay Brothers is rather good too...

Heard somewhere(here we go again)that this song was a homeage to Jimi Hendrix...confirm/deny...
Love Bowie, he influenced many including Pete Murphy (Bauhaus)...thankyou etc.
A great artist who knew how to move with the times and still remain cool.

The track Ziggy Stardust has a pretty badass riff somewhere in it. Good lyrics too. But I suppose this is one of the tracks you've heard already?

I was not contesting it. I was merely stating that I don't rate his early material much. By early I'm talking late 60s and early 70s. My view is that in that particular period his main strength as a songwriter were his singles. I'm not going to say that the album tracks are absolute suck - that would be going too far - but there was a great deal of better album music being made over the same period, both in mainstream and more niche markets.

I think "The Man Who Sold The World" is a good album for reasons already stated. Young Americans is TERRIBLE! I've even come across Bowiephiles who are only too quick to call that album a mis-step. Low and Heroes don't come into what I'm talking about, because they were later-period Bowie albums. I like both, particularly Low.

Why is it immature? It merely reflects my opinion that on the whole it's not a good album. I don't see why disliking a record and using harsh language to describe it would qualify as immature. Please explain yourself further.

Presumably you did not understand. I simply said that I came to know Bowie through his singles, and had always been a fan. I was merely establishing that I was not a hater of Bowie, if anything quite the contrary. I'm not a hater now, either. Just, his early work disappoints me and cannot live up to the standarRAB of some of the truly terrific stuff that was being churned out in the early 70s, in all genres.
