The Official David Bowie Thread

I prefer his glam rock days and early albums over anything.

But this is me, of course I'm going to prefer the stuff that Rick Wakeman played on.

And Mick Ronson is an incredibly underrated guitarist.

I do like it yes, as far as is glam rock period goes it's a really good consistent collection. Can't go wrong with Width of a Circle, beautiful song.

I love Bowie.
Fav album - HUnky Dory.
Songs - Rebel Rebel, man who sold the world, Oh! You pretty things, Changes, Life on mars.

Great songwriter yes but musician, I never was under that impression at all. My favourite David Bowie of all time ran something like: "calling David Bowie a musician is akin to saying Nero was a harp player: technically true, but misleading".

To Jalen-

Yeah you're saying they were average musicians, aside from Lennon I have to disagree. They were a really good enserable, I never said they were virutosos, hell no. But you seem to think they need to be virutosos in order to be considered good musicians, and that ain't true.

Harrison is simple, so what? So is Clapton. So is Gilmour.

And people really don't consider how good of a bassist McCartney actually was, their songs had really melodic basslines that you wouldn't find anywhere else in rock music at the time. Paul didn't play so much like he was just part of the rhtyhm section, and that of course influenced tons of rock bassists, everyone from Entwhistle to Squire.

Ringo was simple, but he wasn't lacking, you have a lot of "simple" drummers that use the same beats over and over, like Watts and Rudd. But Ringo was able enough to play whatever it was he needed to and just about every song has something unique about the drums.

Instrumentally, Lennon was the only weak link in the band. Though he had some great riRAB to his name and his rhythm playing was tight enough. But his limitations were especially noticable in his solo career where his playing figured in more prominately and also Beatles songs where he played lead.

Just listen to The End, and how weak Lennons solo licks are compared to Harrison and McCartneys. Harrison and McCartney were both really good guitarists, they were simple but that dosen't make them a sloppy mess.

I do agree that they worked better as an enserable way better than they did on their own. Chemestry is key, obviously.

To Urban-

Well nothing else other than Rebel Rebel really stood out to me, but it's been ages since I listened to that album so maybe I should give it another spin, I just remerabering it being really boring.

In my opinion, the 70's were his best years. The compilation album "ChangesOneBowie" includes virtually all of his biggest hits from 1969 through 1976.

Anyone who's not familiar with Bowie's music from that period, should definitely check it out:

Side one

1. "Space Oddity" (from Space Oddity, 1969)

I was just listening to Iggy Pop's "China Girl" before and I also like "Suffragette City", which is covered very well by Alice In Chains!!!

yeah, but Alice Cooper went as far as to murder himself everynight on stage, where as Manson, well, the body suit for Dope show speaks for itself....

I don't know about that, he's a pretty competent guitar and piano player, and all the saxophone on his recorRAB is usually him as well. He plays far more than most singers do.

Fuck it "Heroes", Low and Get Heathen are all downloading. If I don't like them they can just rot in my iTunes as I play Aladdin Sane to death. :D

Good man, 90's Bowie...
Outside and Earthling are both top drawer, Earthling may be hideously derivative but no other 60-year-old (however old he was) could have done a drum n' bass album in 1997 and made it credible and song-oriented to boot.

Is anybody else as narked (yes it's a word I made up) that he never completed the cycle of three albums that Outside was supposed to kick off?

I'm also very partial to Hours (it's short, laid back and there's not a bad tune on there). Unfortunately Black Tie White Noise is hideously dated (not in a nostalgic 90's way like the rest for me) and is mostly just a bit silly IMO.
