The Mist

Went to see this on Saturday after reading the review on rabroad. I enjoyed every minute of it, but the ending was really shocking. I wasn't expecting that! It certainly wasn't the typical Hollywood feel good ending which is no bad thing.

Is this film only on a limited cinema release? There is only one showing per day at my local cinema and a couple of others in the area aren't showing it at all which is a real shame.

With Mrs Carmady,do you not think thats a typical character in most of King's work. Theres always one thats really outspoken and has to go against the majority.Sometimes watching her i was cringing. It went on and on so much. But it was a fun film.

The actress Marcia Gay Harden who played her, was superb! Her portrayal was absolutely spot on and Oscar worthy. I'm really surprised there wasn't a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance at this year's Oscars.

Great movie! One of the best King adaptations ever. I liked how there were no cheesy lines anywhere to be found. Just people reacting in ways you'd expect, and ways that perhaps you wouldn't think about but that would start to wonder how humans would behave in a situation like that.

The ending was
shocking. I had an inkling towarRAB the end that that is where it was heading, but I was hoping I wasn't right! I can understand where people are coming from when they say they gave up too quickly. But they did drive around for a while and I can understand why they felt there was no way out.

Yes I would use Spoiler alert as this is a movie that could spark much debate.

I watched it last night and can't decide if it was brilliant or awful.

I would certainly recommend it as a must see just so that more people will be here to discuss their thoughts on it. :)

I don't see what people are complaining about with the ending:

They hardly gave up too soon, they drove round for long enough to run out of gas and almost get out of town, but ran out of gas, they didn't think help was coming so they wanted to die by their own hand rather than the monsters

I loved the film, a little long, but great none the less.

I thought the end was great but saying that it's not really an ending I can imagine me wanting to view repeatedly.

I wish they would have filmed the book ending (it would have taken no time at all) and included it on the dvd set, I could then watch the film more often with the ambiguous book ending rather than the more mean spirited film ending.

The film Se7en has an extremely bleak ending that offers little hope for anybody, it still also shocks on repeated viewings but Se7en is a great film so it stanRAB up to constant viewings. The Mist on the other hand is just a decent horror film and once you have seen it once i'm not sure the film is strong enough on the whole to make repeat viewings a worthwhile experience with the ending it has.

I have always been a Stephen King fan but am acutely aware that his stories do not always translate well to the screen; with The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile being notable exceptions (but not the only ones, I did enjoy Misery and Dolores Claiborne and of course Carrie). I wasn't aware that this film was being made but am so glad that it was - I read the story (from Skeleleton Crew) many years ago and have never forgotten it - particularly the chilling description of the encounter with the creature who was so big that it was impossible to tell exactly HOW big.......

My 'local' cinema (12 miles) only had one showing -
at 22:40 (!) - but that didn't deter me. I would always faithfully believe that I would enjoy the visual translation of any of SK's work and am not educated enough to be highly critical so this film did not disappoint me. My only silly question was "HOW much dog food did that store have in stock?"

The ending in the book was fairly unfulfilling so I guess that the film possibly did need to tie up the main loose end; the fact that it was non-Hollywood is refreshing and fairly honest IMO.

I don't think that they had only driven for a short while - I think he said earlier in the film that he had a full tank but even half in a Land Cruiser would get you some distance - and imagine to have driven so far with no sign of the mist clearing at all and being so aware that the creatures were still all around; plenty of time to consider your options and make what might have seemed to us to be a hasty decision but in truth, we don't know how long after the engine dying they sat there, afraid that the next noise they heard would be on the roof of the vehicle.

Seriously one of the most disturbing films I have ever watched. Yet strangely uplifting as well.

That ending..... I just it was coming when IT was all done...... When it was done...... I knew there would be a reveal...... And oh my...... oh my oh my.

Goes to show....... No matter how hopeless a situation is...... One must always have faith in humanity...... Because they are still some good people in the world. Always people who will make things alright..... Never take the easy way out.... Things might get better.

That is what I got from the movie

Okay, SPOILER ALERT, but as I have blanked the text out hopefully that is obvious.....

What did people think of the ending ? I am confused with what I think of this movie. I didn't seem to enjoy a lot of it, but the ending was quite thought provoking. Would it have been better if they all survived ? Would it have been better if we saw him shoot himself and the others, and then the army arrived ? Also how was the mist dissapearing, was it being flamed away ?

Amazingly Cineworld screenings in central London amounted to one screening after 10pm on Friday to Sunday only. I was getting the special edition DVD anyway but decided to expedite that. I can wholeheartedly recommend the set - there are plenty of extras showcasing the fx, designs, Drew Struzan(the cinema poster artist), and the black and white version with an introduction by Frank.

I'm surprised there have been criticisms of the acting and fx. The former I thought exceptional, particularly amongst the supporting cast, whilst the fx designs and execution fulfilled my expectations from reading the novella over 25 years ago. The dialogue and direction I found especially satisfying, and it really is worth hearing Frank's commentary to see how he re-worked scenes(markedly the creatures in the supermarket) and moved them. The ending is exceptional and its darkness probably the root cause of the film not performing better in America.

Frank explains on the commentary that the mist lifting after the deaths could be seen as fulfilling some skewed version of a biblical prophecy, in line with Mrs Carmody's reference to Abraham offering up his only son as a sacrifice to God. I missed on first showing the woman who had left the supermarket to get home to her 2 kiRAB, being on the refugee truck that drives by at the end with them. That was another mildly uplifting scene in tandem with the mist lifting and the army seemingly retrieving the situation, as various creatures seem to get burnt in the background. One touch I loved was the sound of the lorries and helicopters continuing on through the end credits.

Anyway, now for the black and white version.
