The Mist

I loved the movie. It is the best Stephen King (horror) movie I've ever seen. And I'm especially happy that the ending was sad & tragic (the ending is better than the book... something Stephen King even admitted).

Happy endings have no place in a horror movie. I'm amazed that this film didn't do well at the box office. Then again, Director Frank Darabont's previous film "Shawshank Redemption" was also a box office failure at the time but is now considered a classic. "The Mist" may very well find itself in the same position some day.

@ BlizzardUK:
There's no reason given as to why the Mist was disappearing. It's possible that it dissipates as it keeps rolling across the U.S.... leaving destruction in its wake. But the most likely reason is that the rift from which the Mist & monsters came from was eventually closed which means nothing was escaping from it anymore. Of course now the army has to deal with the monsters that are still walking around.

Is that in the cinema or straight to DVD?

I enjoyed it, very dark ending but maybe Frank Darabont was fed up of uplifting endings for his King adaptations.

You can imagine David Drayton then finding the nearest gun and killing himself, having just needlessly killed his son.

Only just caught up with this movie...Wow! Such an atmospheric film. It certainly lingers well afer the credits have rolled.

Major bonus was hearing DCD's Host of Seraphim again after so many years. I used to be a huge DCD fan back in the day.

i know in the USA they're releasing a B&W version on dvd to capture the mood even more..

I've managed to get hold of the film  so i'll watch it when i can

;-)

looking forward to it

Can't believe it's taken so long to get released here - saw a trailer for it last week before The Happening, and it's still a month away. I've seen it but wouldn't mind seeing it on the big screen since horror films of this nature are hard to come by.

It's definitely one of King's best movie adaptations, but then again the short stories often work best as they don't need to cram so much in and ruin certain aspects. With this there was a basic survival story with an interesting concept, so (directing and atmosphere etc aside) it would be disappointing to see it turn out badly.

The whole mood and look of the film, and the music especially as I recall, was excellent and really grim and unsettling. The effects were atrocious at first when we first saw them used but somehow improved all of a sudden when the other creatures came along, probably the budget stretched to breaking point. I was also so SO excited and happy they kept in:

the shot of the HUGE monster, barely seen in the mist leaving it to the imagination but letting you know its gigantic, walking over their car while that haunting music plays. Such a brilliant scene that didn't need expanding on at all, it gave me goosebumps

The acting was a bit dodgy at times and actually a lot of the dialogue was ridiculous, I mean it's hard to believe a modern day supermarket would end up with the people ending up the way they did, America or not lol (of course as usual this comes across as more acceptable in a written story). LoaRAB of stupid moments in terms of what people did or didn't do that made no sense as well, but it's all forgiveable. As for the ending:

Well it was fine for it's shock and unique factor, but my boyfriend thought it was pretty stupid they ran out of gas and instantly commited suicided lol. I could see why, but he has a point, I mean it's better to wait a while surely?! I liked the original story ending for its sense of isolation with a glimmer of hope, made you wonder what would happen next. ReminRAB me of 28 Days Later and how their journey lead to the second half of the film being so different, I can picture a similar thing here. Still it was interesting even if it left a horrible stomach churning feeling in you afterwarRAB

I'd be really interested to see the B/W version. I kinda disagree with drifter she she says the cgi was a bit wonky. I think the effects fitted the piece perfectly. Reminded me of the 50s monster movies like Them etc but with a modern twist ie in gory but muted grainy colour. It worked on every level for me.
