The Mist

I only meant I thought they were dodgy when they first appeared:

the tentacled thing that tries to get in the back, it looked insanely cheap and awful to me. Of course it might be because every other monster is more "spindley" and rapid moving so the effects may have been harder to do for this...or maybe it was deliberately to be quite retro and B-movie-ish like you say. Every other effect was excellent though, like the flies and the spiders.
 
One of those scenarios where having a multi-region player pays dividenRAB, otherwise you have to wait until nearly a year after the film's US release to get the R2 DVD. It was driving me mad enough reading about the ending for 4 months without knowing what it was.
 
Hi drifter, I wasn't having a pop. I actually agree. I think the tentacles fitted the lo-fi-sci-fi 50s part really well. The fx got better as the movie progressed, but the real horror was ultimately human based.
 
Darabonts previous film was "The Majestic" which was a commerical and critical faliure. The Green Mile has been the one movie that Darabont has made so far that has gained the critical success and acclaim at the time.
 
I loved this, the tension and the rising horror from the human elements, alongside the scary creatures and the gore, fantastic.

What was the ending in the book?
 
Damn, I'd never even heard that a movie had been made of this, which is a very rare event for me.

Vividly remember the short story though, one of my all-time SK favourites along with 1408. From Nightmares and Dreamscapes wasn't it?

"Expiation!" cried Mrs Carmody, "Expiation!"

"The moving finger has writ, not in fire but in smoke":D

I really hope that dialogue is in the film!

If memory serves me correctly:

They hear a faint word (hope) when scanning the radio and then just keep driving on and on. It's left open-ended.
 
This film was released in America last Autumn, yet we only got to see this summer. Strange!

I saw it at my local Cineworld and it only played for a week which is a shame as i think this is really a word of mouth type of film. Not in the same league as Shawshank of course but a worthy film nonetheless.

I thought the ending was really, really sad. Very grim and quite shocking when you realise if they had just waited a little bit longer before making 'THAT decision.......i won't say anymore.

The craziest thing that happened in the cinema when i saw The Mist was the scene where
Mrs Carmady gets shot
everyone cheered and clapped!!! I couldn't believe it! It was crazy! Totally understand why there was cheering as
she was such an unpleasant and nasty
character but to clap
someone being shot and killed
i found that really morbid even if it was deserved :p

Good film though but probably wouldn't watch it again. I thought Thomas Jane was great, really carrried the whole film.

Didn't expect the ending, not too sure what I think about it tbh

it just seemed they gave up too quickly. Really shocking though.
 
Watched this last night too ;) Loved the short-story and i was so anxious about this release, but the film was brilliant. Not what i expected at all. I wasn't hopeful for the special effects in a film without A-listers or an obsene budget, yet they fitted the film perfectly. (cgi things coming out of mist could've easily looked shit!)


The acting is very good and the dynamic of the townsfolk and their beliefs plays well. There are also plenty of shocks and more than a little gore!:D It's quite a long film considering how short the short-story it's based upon is, but it keeps your attention.

Saw this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it, well nearly. Thomas Jane wasn't that good imo, but the rest of the cast were brilliant. Even Mrs Carmody, who I was screaming to be thrown out of the store. If I'd been in that store, she would have been first out the door, telling her to go find expiation some place else :D

That said, it was great how the tension built with the fanaticism of Mrs Carmody and her followers. It certainly beat to a pulp, ripped to shreRAB and digested whole the likes of teen horror films Saw and Hostel. There was none of the gratuitous dismembering of people, just for the sake of a cheep thrill.

I have just seen it, are we alowed to discuss things here or do we have to write a spoiler alert ? I wouldn't mind chatting about the movie but unsure if I need a massive spoiler warning first.
