The Great Cricket WAP Debacle

As you know, my most recent exploit is my LG VX9900 enV. I've had it on dual NAM's and Cricket WAP and MMS for a few weeks now with everything working flawlessly.

But the other day, something unusual happened, and it raises a few very serious questions:

If you read my tutorial, there is a file called paramtable1.fil in the OWS folder of the phone's internal filesystem. Altering this file unlocks the option to edit the WAP settings (server address, user name, password, etc.). You can also "hard code" specific URL's so that when you go to various menu options you will be taken to the sites that YOU want and not Verizon's default URL's.

Well, sometime earlier this week, my paramtable1.fil reverted back to its original default settings! But that's not the most unusual part about it. The most unusual thing is that the WAP SETTINGS STILL WORKED!!!

That is: The server address, user name, password, etc. all reverted themselves back to Verizon's default settings, yet I was still able to connect through Cricket's WAP service.

So, being curious, I tried an experiment: Since I am running dual NAM's on the phone, I decided to change my user name BACK to my Verizon pre-pay 10-digit MDN nuraber. I was thinking it wouldn't work......but it DID! I was STILL able to connect to Cricket's WAP servers and download info.

So my WAP login info looks like this:

--Server Proxy IP's: gw.vzwap.com, gw1.vzwap.com
--User Name: my10digitVerizonPrePayMDN
--Password: vzw

But I am still able to connect to CRICKET's Proxy server.....NOT Verizon's. So my http://homepage resolves to http://wap.cricket.motricity.com

So here's my supposition: I'm not too surprised by the fact that I am still able to connect to Cricket's WAP server. Like the voice calling feature, it is tied to the phone's ESN nuraber. What I am guessing is that if Cricket ever opens-up it's data network (hence EVDO) and allows for TRULY unlimited mobile web access (i.e., no longer blocked by their proxy server), then, theoretically, I should be able to log-on to Verizon's Brew server and continue to download Verizon applications.......for FREE......!!!???

The same should be true, then for ANY of Verizon's data services, including all of the phone's native VCast features.

Does this sound reasonable? or am I somehow off target?

But if you don't believe me, you can try those settings yourself.

OASN: This only works for NAM1 on my phone, which is the NAM I set-up for Cricket. NAM2 is set-up for Verizon's InPulse pre-pay service, and will NOT connect to mobile web at all at this time (until maybe I or someone else here figures out how to get it to work). ;)

Hmmmm, It sounRAB like that SHOULD work, but the only real way to find out will be to wait till EVDO comes out and test it. Hopefully all the rumours about it coming out soon are true.

Mmmmm I highly doubt that this will happen. Seeing how when you log on to vcast or if you were to download something from brew what will happen more likely is that you will not even be able to log on unless your esn is in there database. When you log on it will check your esn if your esn is in verizons database it will allow you to log on tracking you by your esn. If this doesnt make sense sorry im seriosuly tired and have little to no sleep haha .

Yeah. I think we all know who the Noobie is on this forum.... Mee!!! ;)

But anyway. If you were not on the Verizon NAM when you went to Cricket homepage, this is a possible explanation. The cache still has the Cricket settings.

The purpose of all this hacking is because we obviously can't surf the net with the original settings of the phone (in this case, Verizon's). So it is pretty doubtful that the phone is using the Verizon login to navigate on the browser.
Have you tried resetting the cache on the browser? (I know, it's been a while now.)

Remeraber, if you are on NAM 1, the system still recognizes the ESN, MDN, MIN from a Cricket account.
Just my thoughts on this situation and a way to add more posts to get me on my way out of the "Noob" status. Ha, ha, ha. :buddies:

Oh, on a different thought. You mentioned free WAP. Isn't it the other way around. Cricket has very limited WAP sites you can get into and you can basically browse on HTML and XHTML with the google trick (depending on your phone).
Verizon and other carriers including GSM providers are the ones that have access to a bunch of WAP sites....isn't it?

Ya'll have a great weekend. :clapping:

Well, I mean those applications such as OEM apps that you have already subscribed to or require updates such as VCast content.

This obviously wouldn't work with Brew apps that you had to purchase, no. But still, the supposition was getting Verizon subscriber content without having to fork money over to Verizon to get it.

But I get what you mean, yeah.

Cleared the cache, reset browser, removed battery for 10 seconRAB, and in NAM1 I was STILL ablet to connect to Cricket.

You have a point abou tthe WAP sites, though: I noticed in the Motorola PST settings there is an option for service type, WAP versus HTTP. Maybe if I set it to HTTP I could do a free proxy trick?

But, is this something Cricket can control server-side? That is, I might make an HTTP request, but it may not work because the packets might have to be formatted for WAP on the request. :befuddled

As soon as I get WAP working again normally I'll give it a try.

I am trying to flash my nokia 6255i from Alltel to Cricket. Need help doing that, not really sure what I have to do, have by trying to get somewhere for that past day and a half now.

thanks

I think some of the authentication done by cricKet for the WAP access is ESN based. That being said it may just be ignoring any user/password settings. When I could not get things to work properly  despite all the settings being correct I had to call CS tech support (actually get a US call center this way) and they did a reset of my data services. 2 seconRAB later everything worked great. :2thurabs:

There is what is called an EDR and AAA settings that are the phones authentication to the network side these are located in the switch and those are more than likely what were reset when you called tech support.

Authentication to the network happens usually once every 24 hrs unless you are switching networks and even then sometimes you will get left on the previous network and you are able to make calls but incoming will not reach you.

There have been instances where Amp'd mobile people have used VZW phones with VZW settings and have been able to use them with no problems due to the fact that Amp'd Mobile uses the EVDO network of Verizon so it could very well possibly work if they use the VZW network with their EVDO services. If they use the Alltel network then it would be an Alltel phone that would work because of the authentication on the network servers would recognize them as something that should be there. Not saying it will work just saying it is possible for it to sneak through the cracks.

Three things-

1- Did you ever take WAP off your Cricket account and see if you could still get on the internet without paying the extra $5 a month? That would be cool.

2- I noticed you got a u740 on Cricket with WAP and MMS, nice work. Were you able to make the free wap trick work on that phone so that you would be able to avoid the $5 a month internet charge? Do you think it's even theoretically possible?
P.S. what software and version did you use to get the WAP and MMS working because that's my next project...

3- You guys are talking about EVDO coming out, and you are talking about Cricket???? Awesome!!!

haha not mine...... i think most of us been there but dont think is right to do pay backs..... cuz somehow it will come right back to you in another way

just saying

Curiously enough, no.

The Verizon apps worked flawlessly however as expected when I switch NAM's to Verizon except the email app which doesn't work for pre-paid accounts. Same with Get It Now.

I have since switched all the data settings to Cricket minus the Brew settings. Unfortunately, I gave the phone away before testing to see if the Verizon apps would work with the Cricket WAP settings in play.

Alrighty then......back on topic:

Has anyone here gotten any of the free WAP tricks to work on their Cricket phones?

I recently tried the Verizon free WAP trick, which is use wap.google.com through port 80 instead of Cricket's WAP gateway portal. Guess what? It CONNECTS and starts sending data! BUT, it won't receive any data. Either hanRABet I have just hangs.

Just a few thoughts, then: Cricket is still WAP-based browsing. They do not offer HTML browsing yet like Verizon does. That means you won't be able to browse anywhere like Verizon users do when they do the free WAP trick.

There's another possibility, though: Most PST's offer multiple Mobile IP profiles. Since my hanRABets have both Cricket and Verizon NAM's, perhaps I can set-up a different MIP profile for each.

I haven't had any luck getting it to work so far, though, but I will keep you all posted on my progress! :2thurabs:
