The Explain Why You Like This Album ('cause i don't understand) Thread

oh, if you like math rock then it's a no-brainer that you'd like it's sister genre post rock. i'd reccomend these post rock banRAB:
Battles (they have the same guitarist as don cab) (check out atlas)
Explosions in the Sky (check out their album Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place)
and of course, And So I Watch You From Afar. (check out their song Don't Waste Time doing things you hate)

also, the math rock (too bad it's not instrumental, though) band this town neeRAB guns is pretty cool, and i highly enjoy them.

and if you like math rock, go download slint's album "spiderland"
it pretty much created both math rock and post rock.

but let me warn you that not much of this stuff is as awesome as "what burns never returns". it's one of the best math rock recorRAB ever recorded.

the only thing that comes close is battles, but they're not quite the same.
 
I don't care about their hype or their status as "punk", they had talent, so I guess they weren't real punk, you're probably right about that.

I also don't know how you could argue that The Clash were unoriginal.
 
Aye, I liked 'Something', 'I Want You', 'Here Comes The Sun', and select songs from the Medley. The rest is boring and overproduced so much that I can't listen through the entire thing.
 
i love Apples in The Stereo, The Unicorns, and if they count Primal Scream, just was never a fan of Of montreal except for a few tracks from Hissing Fauna.
 
I love Morning View even though the older fans like to call it the low point. It's certainly better than Make Yourself, and IMO it's on par with Science even if stylistically it's a very different album.

I think Science is underrated overall, but it's rated very highly among Incubus fans, and among the older fans, I don't think they give Morning View enough credit, though I understand the reason they dislike it is because it marks a major departure from their original style.

But just about every album marks a significant change in one way or another. I certainly don't like the direction they've taken with Light Grenades.

"Pretentious" is the excuse and you know it. Beefheart most likely made it see the "pretentious" artsy ***s spend empty nights trying to find some meaning in it.
 
I'm not trying to convince anyone that it isn't ok to like slayer. i was just exploring the various reasons for liking/disliking slayer. It's different for people who find different things to be important. Plus their being religious isn't why I dislike them. I mostly dislike them cuz I don't like the vocals. I could overcome the catholic thing if i was totally in love with their band. And I agree that instrumentally (excluding the instrument of the voice) they are really great.
Just discussing... that's all... wasn't that the point of this thread? Not to convince anyone of anything but just to discuss the various reasons why we like or dislike things?
 
Moondance was a reflection on Morrison's childhood. Not only is it one of his most popular, but it's got some genuinely beautiful songs and really demonstrates his versatility as an artist. It definitely has some low points (don't get me started on Crazy Love), but the high points are some of his most gorgeous. See And It Stoned Me, Into the Mystic, Caravan, Come Running, etc.

Haha, you may think it won't change my mind, but I continue to listen to albums, with the hope that "I get it!!!", I always believe it to be a bit ignorant to listen to an album once and then dismiss it as bad, if a piece of work has a big fan base, and people really rate it (fans and critics.) There must be something to it?

But at the moment, I don't rate it. A lot of the time, I'll say that, and then a few months later really like it. I make myself look hypocritical a lot, but there's nothing wrong with changing your mind eh.

See now I think that when you have a band as consistently good as Steely Dan any sort of compilation doesn't do it justice. There's really no filler in their entire discography and they're not a singles band. They're an albums band. They make excellent albums. You should listen to them.

Of course, I don't like compilations very much anyway.
 
Don't feel bad. I've been trying to get outside of the small niche of prog that I actually like, mainly Yes, Rush, and Pink Floyd, and get into some more stuff from the genre, but I'm finding a lot of the cliche pitfalls in both modern and classic prog rather annoying.
