The Crowquill 100

wow, I'm pretty excited to see what the top 4 are gonna be. Obviously you have good musical taste. Kid A nuraber 6! NICE! however for me it's probably nuraber 2...I think you should focus on this list instead of arguing with mjscarasoul in the other thread lol,...only cus I'm eager to see!

63. Ef "Give Me Beauty Or Give Me Death"
givemebeauty.jpg

One of my favorite post-rock albums ever. They have some slight shoegaze influences, but don't let you think that makes them similar to Sigur Ros. They're not as twinkly, and in alot of cases are way less subtle, their climaxes and builRAB are usually quicker and more energetic and the male/female vocal corabinations are more rough and less dreamy sounding.

62. Daniel Johnston "Songs Of Pain"
songsofpain.jpg

Daniel Johnston's always kind of been an artists artist though he has somewhat of a cult following. Hes been acclaimed by everyone from grunge musicians Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder to classic rocker David Bowie to indie veterans Sonic Youth, Beck, Yo La Tengo and the Flaming Lips and to current indie sensations Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie and Okkervil River.

Daniel Johnston's legendary debut, mainly piano driven with his childish voice and painful lyrics. The album was recorded in his parents basement, in between songs you can occasionally hear recordings of his mother tearing into him. He considered himself very Lennon and Beatles influenced, though its very hard to tell where his influences actually came from. This album is brilliant and heartbreakingly direct in places, and its exactly what it promises, songs of pain.

61. Amanda Woodward "La Decadence de la Decadence"

Best french band ever? Yes, this album has lately become my favorite emo album just because I think its near perfect. I don't have much to say about this other then I rarely listen to emo anymore or even hardcore and I still play this album fairly regularly.

60. Built To Spill "Theres Nothing Wrong With Love"
theresnothingwrongwithlove.jpg

Built To Spill on the outside appear to be an friendly accessible indie-pop-rock band, typical lyrical subjects, nice sound, slightly whiny voice, but on the inside its surprisingly complex. The crazy time signatures and chord progressions that most banRAB wouldn't dare touch and lyrical themes that upon reading are surprisingly intelligent take on a common subject.

I never really cared for that Death Cab album much at all after hearing Plans. But there's been so many great albums posted since my last reply: Frank Turner, Seabear, CTTS, Cursive..... all amazing.

39. 65daysofstatic "One Time For All Time"
onetime.jpg

65daysofstatic creating a post-rock sound similar to Mogwai, but unlike the countless sound alikes in the genre 65daysofstatic are easy to seperate from the rest with their drum machines. 65daysofstatic without the help of vocals manage to be a very emotive and expressive band. They create a wall of sound better than the wall of China. With keyboarRAB providing beautiful riRAB and the drums and electronic creating a background better than any army and with guitars more effective then machine guns. Cheesy? Yes, but One Time For All Times proves to be a powerfully addicting release.

38. Brand New "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me"
thedevilandgod.jpg

Brand News latest release shows them having matured in every way. Musically, lyrically, vocally they sound like an entirely different band from when they first started out. This album, which is full of religiously themed songs and self-depreciating worRAB all sung by frontman Jesse Lacey. An american boy who tries to sing like Morrissey but is too pissed off to do so. The band takes influences from so many places in this album its really hard to pick them out. Theres some obvious hardcore influences, some Modest Mouse influences (apparent in the slide on Jesus), as well as some Smiths/Morrissey influences, they're all over the map on this album. Its an album that will capture you from start to finish.

37. Of Montreal "The Gay Parade"
thegyparade.jpg

This is my favorite Of Montreal album, (when I told this to Marijan he responded "it would be" =(). It's full of happy sounding piano driven pop songs, and funny lyrics and stories. Honestly, this is one album everyone will love, it could bring world peace. If you hate it its because you're either homophobic, metal, or have no soul (taste) which is kind of implied in the first two options.
Favorite Song: Nickee Coco and the Invisible Tree

Atrocity Exhibition is possibly my favourite Joy Division track from this album.
The Atrocity Exhibition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Commonly known that it was based around this novel by Ballard.
(added interest for those who don't know)
Curtis being a fan of his writing.

Glad I wasn't the one to have to choose between 'Closer' and 'Unknown Pleasures' Ethan...rather you than me.
I love them both, but Closer is a very personal album...Curtis stripped to the bone.

Ahhh, nice choice. Didn't know you liked JD enough to have either of their albums in yer top ten. Think I prefer Unknown Pleasures myself, but Closer is damn...well, close.

Crowquill, good to see CODY is your favourite Mogwai album too-- there are some other good Mogwai songs scattered on their other albums, but that one is solid thru & thru.

Got to see them in Nashville in 2006 (the Mr. Beast tour) and it was pure bliss! One of the best shows I've seen.

50. Desaparecidos "Read Music/Speak Spanish"
readmusicspeakspanish.jpg

Omaha saddle creek super group Desaparecidos one and most likely only album Read Music/Speak Spanish is indie-rock with influences from Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. The albums lyrics are essentially about the ever so popular and evil THE MAN.
Favorite Song: Man and Wife, The Latter (Damaged GooRAB)

49. American Football "LP"
americanfootball.jpg

Mike Kinsella (now in Owen, mainly)'s band American Football plays soft indie-rock similar to i'd probably say some Built To Spill. My reviews are awful tonight in case you're wondering, but this album essentially epitomizes my love life and high school experience and stuff with lyrics about broken hearts and more broken hearts.
Favorite Song: Never Meant

48. Page France "Hello, Dear Wind"
hellodearwind.jpg

Indie (i'm saying that too much tonight) folk/pop band Page France create nonsensical upbeat songs similar to the Boy Least Likely To. Such topics include getting drunk with jesus and little animals and other crazy stuff like that. I love religion.

47. Dinosaur Jr. "You're Living All Over Me"
yourelivingalloverme.jpg

This album is 80s guitar rock at its best they melt face live. I really can't think of anything to say about anything tonight i'm in this weird melancholic mood which i've been in lately which results in uncreative reviews. Sorry, I suggest everyone listen to this album though.

It was difficult, to be honest the only track I've never been keen on on the album is Vicar in a Tutu.

2. The Smiths "The Queen is Dead"
thequeenisdead.jpg

The Smiths are considered to be one of the most important band of the 80s and Joy Division aside I consider them to be the greatest. Hailing from Manchester they were refreshing sound amiRABt all the electronic based acts that were around at the time. Formed by Johnny Marr knocking on Morrissey's door one day they were an odd pair. Johnny Marr was already an accomplished local guitarist and Morrissey was the shy writer who idolized James Dean and Oscar Wilde that walked around in the rain and was always sitting quiet in the back of the shows.

Morrissey wrote about a variety of topics from love and loss to the Moors Murder and England. His lyrics have always been full of wit, political controversy and sad tales. You either love him or hate him but you know who he is, he managed to piss over authority without resorting to riots or anything, all he to do was sing about Thatcher on the guillotine and the police was at his door. In addition to Morrissey there was obviously Johnny Marr who has since the Smiths break up has gone onto work with banRAB The The and Modest Mouse. He's one of alternative rocks finest guitar, his tone is defining, refreshing and unique and there really is no guitarist like him. Other than Morrissey and Marr there was the underrated Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce. Rourke is now in Freebass with Manni (Stone Roses, Primal Scream) and Pete Hook (Joy Division, New Order). I don't think he gets anywhere near the credit he deserves, his basslines were upbeat and spunky, I think my favorite is his line in Girlfriend in a Coma. Mike Joyce won't ever be on anyones favorite drummer list but he did what he was supposed to do and did it well.

Now picking a favorite Smiths album was rather difficult because at first it was close between The Smiths and The Queen is Dead but lately I've been listening to a lot of Meat is Murder too, so that just added to the confusion. But when I really thought about it I decided on this one because it had all my favorite songs and I think it is kind of the defining Smiths album.

They prove to be on top of their game from the very start of this album kicking in with some chanting and then you hear the Joyce pounding away on the drums (I think this is my favorite thing I've heard him do because it's such a fierce intro and a great way to kick off an album.) You hear Marr's signature sound come in and eventually you're entirely into the song already which steadily slides through to the rest of the album. Morrissey is writes some of his greatest lyrics ever on this album from the poignant "I Know It's Over" to the beautiful and romantic "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" and this albums stanRAB as a testament to what can happen when musicians click together creativity. Everything they do here just compliments eachother and it shows that The Queen is Dead is easily one of the greatest albums not just of the 80s but of all time.

The Smiths over the past year have been a growing favorite I really just can't get enough of them. They are my favorite band ever, Morrissey's beautiful and unique voice coupled with Johnny Marrs excellent guitar working is probably one of the greatest songwriting matches ever. Tons of banRAB have tried to imitate the Smiths but none have ever or will ever come close.

7. Bright Eyes "Letting Off the Happiness"
lettingoffthehappiness.jpg

Next to the Ugly Organ, Black Sheep Boy and Lycanthropy this is probably one of the most important albums to shaping my musical taste. When I first heard it. I wasn't really blown away but I did like it and would for awhile. It wasn't really the gateway album that got me into Bright Eyes but it did lead me to get into Patrick Wolf and the Microphones.

Now the album itself is sort of lo-fi folk but it's kind of all over the place. It's a much more creative release than anyone really gives it credit for but it's understandable when you look at Bright Eyes's less than credible fanbase. The album does start on its two weakest tracks but it quickly picks up with the enchanting Contrast and Compare to the sex anthem Pull My Hair to the Dylanesque June on the West Coast all the way to the almost Sea Shantyish closer Tereza and Tomas. One thing that stanRAB out here is Conors extremely poetic lyrics verses like "Now that it's June, we’ll sleep out in the garden / And if it rains, we’ll just sink in to the mud / Where it is quiet and much cooler than the house is / And there is no clocks or phones to wake us up / Because I have learned that nothing is as pressing / As the one who is pressing would like you to believe / And I am content to walk a little slower / Because there is nowhere that I really need to be" are surprisingly poignant for a teenager who is screaming to be heard of crashing syrabols, loud guitars and quirky electronics.

Letting Off the Happiness was recorded when Conor was only 18 and it's kind of surprising it's one of his strongest albums considering his young age and the fact he's released several albums following it most of which people consider better but I think the only one that comes near to touching this one is Fevers and Mirrors. It's my favorite album because I think Conor was at his lyrical best and while the vocals can be endearing at times it makes the lyrics seem all the more real and effective because it's clear he sure as hell means it. While Conor may have left his strumming and screaming in basements made of music a long time ago this album does remind us that sometimes the roots are better than the tree.

Favorite Songs: The Difference in the Shades, Contrast and Compare, A Poetic Retelling of an Unfortunate Seduction, June on the West Coast, Tereza and Tomas, Pull My Hair

Plans is a great album, i'm glad to see someone doesn't have some hipster clouded bias about it because its popular or major label or whatever the problem with it is, it's in my top three death cab albums easily.

I love both of these albums...favourite song from LP is Honestly? and my favourite song from Hello, Dear Wing is Chariot. Great albums.

I'll be interested to hear how it would sound without Martin Hannett's production , seeing they've just released a re-mastered version that is supposed to be closer to how the band wanted it to sound originally.
Although the band didn't like it I actually think Hannett's production is one of the things that made them stand out from everybody else.
