12. Vashti Bunyan "Just Another Diamond Day"
diamondday.jpg

Vashti Bunyan is a British folk singer who in the mid-60s had some very big shoes to fill. She was hyped to be the next Marianne Faithfull and the female Bob Dylan, but the female Nick Drake would’ve been more appropriate and not just because merabers of Fairport Convention were on this album or because Robert Kirby was involved in the making of it. Like Drake, she simply walked away from the music business though she only left us with one album as opposed to three and just like Drake she didn’t receive near the success she deserved when she first came onto the scene. Even today, just like Drake, she remains criminally underrated despite being an important figure in folk music, and one of the most important British folk artists ever. Her influence stretches far and wide, from Patrick Wolf to Joanna Newsom. Though in recent times Vashti Bunyan has gained a bit more popularity by working with artists such as Animal Collective and Devendra Banhart and did release another album in 2005, however i’m going to focus on her remarkable debut.

This album was written when Vashti was traveling the Scottish IslanRAB in a horse drawn gypsy cart, which seems fitting for a folk musician. The album gives you a very natural feel throughout it, especially the lyrics which reflect the outdoors frequently with poetic lyrics like "Rose hip Noveraber, autumn I’ll remeraber / Gold landing at our door, catch one leaf and fortune will surround you evermore". But while lyrics like that seem beautiful, they’re sadly not very noticeable unless you read them beforehand. Vashti has this way of captivating you, and taking you on a walk through the wooRAB with her where the tirabre of her voice and every fading note is more important then the things shes singing to you. Its enchanting music, her vocals fit perfectly over the woodwinRAB and everything else all being led in song by an acoustic guitar making it easy to be lost in the world of changing seasons, lost loves and European fielRAB she paints for you.

I'm having a crisis picking album 11 =(. I want my top 10 to be perfect and I have 11 perfect albums here and I don't know which one to give the boot.

59. The Fiery Furnances "Gallowsbird's Bark"
gallowsbirRABbark.jpg

I had heard Tropical Ice-land and thought it was a nice song, she had an amazing voice and the music was beautiful. I put off checking them out for a long time, but I noticed the album in a record store and thought 'What the hell? I have the cash' and bought it. I was going to throw in a few sentences to add on to that useless story but thats not interesting to anyone. So to make it short I got it in 05, quit listening to it and got it out again about a month ago. The lyrics are often unpredictable, they're basically skewed sepia vignettes with locations dropped in. The album is full of wonderful experimental pop songs, and is an amazing listening all the way through though the second half of the album is much better. So you can put it on and expect it to get better and better.

58. Animal Collective "Strawberry Jam"
strawberryjam.jpg

This is my favorite Animal Collective album and it's the album that actually opened the door for me to really really get into them. I'd had Feels for awhile but i'd never fallen in love with it i'd just liked it. So I didn't get Strawberry Jam for awhile (mistake) but when I did I was surprised to find I really liked it. After sleeping with it for a few weeks I put on Feels again and liked it, but not as much as Strawberry Jam. A cookie to you Animal Collective.

57. Wilco "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"
yankkhotelfoxtrot.jpg

Light up a cigarette and get yourself some coffee or alcohol its Wilco time! Gentle acoustic ballaRAB with Tweedy's quirky lyrics but! This time Wilco ventures a bit more and moves from their sound a bit incorporating different elements that some found annoying others found refreshing.

56. Paul Baribeau "Paul Baribeau"
paulbaribeau.jpg

Creating simple, amateur folk songs in vein of singer/songwriters like Daniel Johnston Paul Baribeau would probably make the average folk fan cringe, however thats the charm to it. With his screaming about heartbreak and basic guitar chorRAB hes much more relatable than your Jeff Buckley's of the world.

96. Youth Pictures Of Florence Henderson "Unnoticable In A Tiny Town, Invisible In The City"

Norwegian post-rock banRAB one and only album, similar to other post-rock banRAB such as Mogwai with a Notwist thing going on.

95. Earlimart "Treble & Trerable"
trebleandtrerable.jpg

Earlimart stray away from their more punk driven sound to dive more into the realm of shoegaze. Essentially it sounRAB like Slowdive meets Grandaddy, with dreamy melodies and airy vocals, it may be nothing special but that doesn't make it any less beautiful.

94. Say Anything "...Is A Real Boy"
isarealboy.jpg

Now singer/songwriter Max Bemis is a completely hypocritical asshole, but if you shove his personality aside he does make good music and write great lyrics. ...Is a Real Boy is a pop-punk/rock album that once you get into it's hard to get out of.

93. Beach House "Beach House"
beachhouse.jpg

Beach House are dreamy, melancholic and true to their name. For some reason this band always conjures of images of slowly driving along the coast and wrapped up in a warm blanket. At times it can be a bit boring but for the most part its just comfortable, and done purely for the most easy listening possible, which isn't a bad thing.

Cool , there's now 2 of us.

On topic: You, You're A History In Rust is about the only post rock album that has ever held my attention right till the end of it.

When I talk about things, I usually refer to the popular view. Avid fans of the band will know everything their is to know about them, but the 'casual' listener won't care enough to.

That film was liked by fans (probably because it was mostly a live show compilation), but the Joe-Strummer-is-god one is getting a lot more attention. I actually assume all of this Clash media hype is due to all of the hot-topic kiddies getting a hold of their albums (same with the Ramones).

Mick Jones had more 'mainstream' success with Big Audio Dynamite than the Clash and Strummer ever had.

No it wasn't , it was a series of interviews with all 4 band merabers made by film-maker Don Letts and screened in a prime time TV slot on a saturday night

Probably because he's dead

Or it could be because they made good recorRAB that stand the test of time & still mean something. I've never been anywhere near a hot topic and I like them and they spilt up long before I was aware of them.

This is going nowhere.

We are arguing (I thought this was just a friendly discussion, but knowing you....) two completely different points.

Good idea.

I've never really been too fond of Happiness, his lyrics are so real and raw in it, but I feel that the music is lacking for me, which is something that I liked most about Lifted.

92. The Boy Least Likely To "The Best Party Ever"

91. Do Make Say Think "You, You're A History In Rust"
historyinrust.jpg

This album always stuck me as a weird post-rock album, not just because of the vocals which seem to be rare amongst post-rock banRAB. But for presenting a more wooden sound. The folk influences are quickly made apparent on the opening track Bound To Be That Way and the banjo that appears throughout the album is excellently placed.

90. Rilo Kiley "Take ORAB and Landings"
takeoRABandlandings.jpg

This is my favorite Rilo Kiley album, maybe because i've always preferred Blake's singing to Jenny's, I don't know. I think its their most charming album because its not fully polished and still shows a more amateur side to them then before but still manages to be a very good release. Other then August my favorite songs are Salute My Shorts, Science Vs. Romance, Bulletproof, Wire and Waves and Small Figures in a Vast Expanse.

89. Idiot Pilot "Strange We Should Meet Here"
strangeweshould.jpg

When I first heard about them I was apprehensive to check them out. I was told they were two eighteen year olRAB who were the hardcore version of radiohead. Upon listening I was shocked that it was good, a very nice blend of modern post-hardcore, pop and electronic. Though the vocals are obviously similar to Yorke its not in the "My name is Matt Bellamy, i'm a faggot" way.
