A good thing about this was the self-aware joke that was made about making a "black" show to get black people to watch, a hopeful sign that the writers are aware of a possible pitfall and will try to avoid it. Cleveland intimidating the boyfriend was also very good.
In general it felt like a light version of Family Guy, except less crazy since Cleveland is not stupid like Peter. We all know the cutaway jokes aren't going to go anywhere, but Cleveland Show could carve out its own place if it holds back on those in favor of making it more like a traditional sitcom. But if it tries to be as wacky as FG or American Dad (or as interested in preaching the writers' opinions), it will never break out of spin-off territory. The pilot is actually not a bad start. The question is whether most episodes are like that one or if it gets stuck in the same old formula.
