The Amazing World Of Gumball – News & Discussion Thread

I can appreciate surrealism when it's executed well, and this series would be a nice change of pace form the aeon flux of action shows that Cartoon Network has been getting. If The Amazing World of Gumball comes to the U.S., I'll check it out.

Alright, we now have pictures to go with the images. I now get the joke of Alan and Carmen's relationship; a balloon and a cactus don't mix well. :p They didn't upload a solo pic for Banana Joe, but I'm pretty sure they meant to.

Gumball-1.png

Gumball: Twelve-year-old Gumball has an epic flair for misadventure. But no matter how his dumb schemes turn out, Gumball never seems to learn his lesson.

Darwin.png

Darwin: Darwin used to be the family pet until he sprouted legs and became one of the Wattersons. He's innocent, na?ve and Gumball's best friend.

Anais.png

Anais: Anais is the smartest member of the family, but no one will listen to her because she's only four.

Nicole.png

Nicole: Mom is the only truly responsible person in the family. She works long hours at the rainbow factory to put food on the table.

Richard.png

Richard: Dad is a giant pink dummy rabbit. He spends most of his time at home watching TV and playing video games.

Robinsons.png

The Robinsons: Although they only live next door to Gumball's family, the Robinsons think they belong to an altogether different class. They're fussy, stuck up and mean.

MissSimian.png

Miss Simian: This sour-faced schoolmistress has been teaching second grade for 300,000 years. Miss Simian despises Gumball and always ruins his plans.

DrBrown.png

Principal Brown: Principal Brown is hopelessly in love with Miss Simian. He spends more time thinking about her than running the school.

Rocky.png

Rocky: Rocky is a jack of all trades. He's the school cook, janitor, bus driver and handyman.

MrSmall.png

Mr. Small: Mr. Small is a new-age school counselor. Although his job is to advise others, he’s actually the one with the most problems.

Penny.png

Penny: Penny is a cute peanut with antlers. She's also the apple of Gumball's eye. They have a massive crush on each other but are both incapable of expressing it.

Larry.png

Larry: Larry works at just about every convenience store, gas station and DVD shop in Elmore.

Tina.png

Tina: Tina Rex is the school bully. Fearsome and aggressive, she makes the other kids’ lives unbearable.

Alan.png

Alan: Alan is the heart-throb of junior high, but only has eyes for Carmen… an impossible relationship for obvious reasons.

Carmen.png

Carmen: Carmen the cactus is a leader amongst the girls. She returns Alan’s feelings even though she knows it can never be.

Hector.png

Hector: Hector is a furry, gentle giant. Despite his size, he's actually quite sensitive.

Anton.png

Anton: Anton is a crumbly piece of toast. He was drafted into Tina's gang against his will.

Tobias.png

Tobias: Tobias thinks he’s a heavily-built jock, but is actually quite puny. Nevertheless he’s obsessed with sports and is always finding new ways to hone his physique.

Masami.png

Masami: Masami is the spoilt daughter of a wealthy rainbow-factory owner.

Clayton.png

Clayton: Clayton is quite the storyteller. He's always telling absurd tales about himself.

Jamie.png

Jamie: Jamie is a tough cookie. She’s Tina's sidekick and also loves to pick on people.

Idaho.png

Idaho: Idaho is a good ol' potato from the countryside, a rural kid with old-fashioned beliefs and blunt manners.

Joe.png

Banana Joe: Banana Joe is the class clown. He spends his time laughing at other people and never quite realizes that the joke is usually on him.

Ocho.png

Ocho: Ocho is a small but tough 8-bit spider. He's a nice guy, as long as you stay on his good side.

Bobert.png

Bobert: Bobert is a true robot-dork. He is by far the smartest kid in class and is Miss Simian's self-appointed teacher's pet.

Carrie.png

Carrie: Carrie is a depressed, deadbeat ghost. Like most emo kids, she enjoys being miserable.

Teri.png

Teri: Teri is always worried about being sick. She spends most of her time at the nurse's office.

Juke.png

Juke: Juke the ghetto-blaster is a foreign exchange student. Nobody understands a word he says because he only speaks in "beatbox."

Leslie.png

Leslie: Leslie is a delicate, gentle flower-boy who plays the flute in the school band.

William.png

William: William is Miss Simian's snitch. He spies on his classmates and only ever speaks when whispering into Miss Simian’s ear.

Well, the internet finally knows that the series exists. rabroad was the only place acknowledging its existence for the longest time, but the recent preview has been posted on numerous blogs and websites; twitter traffic about the show has picked up as well. Hopefully they start releasing some more stuff soon, if not from the US then the UK. I would imagine that Cartoon Network's UK counterpart will promote the series more heavily, seeing how the series is produced over there.

I suppose we'll have to wait until next week either way. Once it's formally announced at the upfront, those non-disclosure agreements should lighten up considerably. The people who worked on it might actually be able to start posting stuff on their blogs. Frankly, I'll never understand why networks don't take the Adventure Time route and just let the show creators post as much material as they want on their blogs. It worked out pretty well for Adventure Time.

The extended version of the fake movie trailer promo aired last night over the end credits of Looney Tunes: Back in Action. (On that note, I kind of think that CN should've paired Gumball with The Looney Tunes Show on Tuesday nights, as it seems to have more in common with that show than it does with the likes of Adventure Time, Regular Show and The Problem Solverz.) This is the most that we've seen of Richard in the previews so far. Pretty much what I expected, typical "dumb dad" stuff, but that's his character. I wasn't expecting Oscar Wilde. The bit with the remote was cute, as was the scene with Richard making Nicole laugh in the garden. I'm curious to see what sort of relationship Nicole and Richard have as a married couple.

Does anyone else find it interesting how the title character's name is "Gumball", yet the rest of his family all have normal names (Richard, Nicole, Anais, Darwin)?

WHOA!!

Effective May 23, Gumball will be airing weekdays at 7:30am. That is not a typo. Also keep in mind the show will only have three episodes aired at that point.

Adventure Time was handled a lot differently than almost any other series CN to begin with, though. I mean, between what you outlined with the blog postings, promotion coming literally months in advance, and the sheer loudness and overall hype of the whole thing, CN already put AT up on a whole other level before it even premiered, and continues to do so at the present time (it gets far more promotion than any animated series on CN does).

I dunno; maybe CN isn't banking on this to become their "next big thing", whereas with AT, they were (which would explain why they've been so tight-lipped about it). I really hope that isn't the case, though, as it doesn't exactly spell a winning attitude and/or vote of confidence for a new series going in. You can look no further than Robotomy for proof of how that tends to turn out.

Well, Gumball is getting a 2nd season order, due to numerous sources.

And Gumball will premiere on May 9th, a week after the UK premiere date.

One thing that I really like is the revelation that Nicole has anger issues. That adds something to her character beyond being the ?responsible? one. When you click on her, you interrupt her conversation and she punches a hole in the door. :p

I'm almost certain it's a nickname. But if not, you have to realize that "The Amazing World of (insert regular name here)" isn't nearly as searchable or catchy. And I wouldn't call Anais a normal name. I wouldn't call Mordecai, Rigby, or Benson normal names either.

Thanks. It looked to me that they uploaded one image twice, so I assumed they accidentally skipped Joe. I added it to the list. Hopefully the website launches in a day or two and they'll get some new videos up.

:^: I don't think it's a nickname; there hasn't been any indication of such. Besides, on a show that features a doughnut cop and a living balloon who mysteriously is able to sustain gravity and not just float to the ceiling, a cat kid named Gumball seems kind of ordinary by comparison.

I don't see it.

Well, those stills were pretty interesting. Kind of wished that I was able to see it in action, but they're pretty cool for what it's worth. I kind of like how the dinosaur looks in one of the pics.

Well, that was funny. I just saw Kiddington this morning talking about if this isn't/is the "next big thing" like Adventure Time, now I come back on the forum and see The Amazing World of Gumball receiving a second season. It looks good, I can't blame Cartoon Network for giving it another season.
