The Amazing World Of Gumball – News & Discussion Thread

I concur, while I like all the tones on Gumball, it shouldn't be CN's answer to SpongeBob Squarepants. In fact, none of Cartoon Network's comedies should be that way.

Cartoon Network's business side is fragile, as their sister company Warner Bros. Cosumer Products is barely working with them on anything, almost always missing a chance to sell products from their shows the way Nick and Disney usually do.

Oh, OK. Thanks! :)

EDIT: That was great. Those character descriptions by Gumball of his family were cute. I wonder if that font the characters' names were printed in will ever go up for commercial sale. I'd like to own that font.

^ If that's the case, I definitely think that CN will give it a chance. They wouldn't put so much behind making this show if they were going to shaft it right away. They would at least give it some sort of chance before doing so.

It's actually been up since the 18th, but it hasn't been updated a single time. I expected there to be a lot more, but then again, the UK premiere isn't actually until this fall so they have no reason to put everything on the website yet.

Indeed.

Hopefully they get the website up in a day or two, and we can have pictures to go with the descriptions. Some of the descriptions provide enough to let you identify the characters, but a lot of them don't. I'm curious who the crumbled paper (bear?) thing is, as they're the most interesting visually out of the supporting cast.

:^: You guys are right, of course. The truth is that Cartoon Network will never have their own Phineas and Ferb or SpongeBob for the simple fact that CN doesn't groom its' shows for that kind of success.

CN tends not to give their shows the kind of maximum exposure and necessary time needed for them to blossom into mega-hits, plus they don't have the advantage of having a mega-corporation in their corner backing them up the way that Nickelodeon has Viacom and Disney Channel has, well, Disney. Warner Bros. could have Turner's back, but those 2 entities still haven't learned how to play nice and get along completely yet. It's just a working relationship, nothing more.

On the one hand that's a good thing, because CN's shows rarely become saturated by overexposure and overextended life, but that can also be bad since so few of their shows achieve that level of notoriety or commercial hugeness.

Hopefully, The Amazing World of Gumball can at least secure a loyal following and be allowed to last enough to achieve Dexter's Lab or PPG level popularity. We can hope.

I agree that the crumpled up bear looks interesting. Some of the characters you can have an idea of who they are from that one large pic released by the Upfront. For example, I know what Banana Joe, Ocho, Tina and Carrie are supposed to look like in that pic as an example. But that bear is something that I can't figure out. It's like I'm playing a game of "Guess Who" with this.

Right now my only deductions based on the bear's designs is that it looks feminine in nature, so I expect it to be a girl and I'm trying to narrow it down to any description for a female character. Of course I know the consequences if it turns out to be a boy. Can't wait to see the profile pics on the CN website.

Woah. I know for a fact you've had your eye on this for a longsss time Huntsman. Mhmm. The blending of 2d, 2.5d cgi, Live-action, was just amazing. Truly amazing. And I thought the animation combos in SymB.Titan was epic. Although I haven't seen the earlier teaser, this one seems, well perfect. Kids don't really pay to much attention to promos nowadays. But I 45s clip of scene will do wonders. Just from that clip, I could a few key points

-its a comedy
-top notch animation(fluidity)
-Multiple animation styles
-kids "and" Adults are gonna love this

You're doin a great job CN. And here I thought 2010 was awesome with GenRex, SymBT, B10:UA, YJ, AT, R.Show, ScbyDooMI, Mad, Metajets, and the Spies series. 2010 blazed a trail. Now 2011 is gonna scorch it red hot.

In a manner of speaking. They get the world premiere, but then the show goes on hiatus until later in the year. The United States is the first to get the full series roll-out. At least based on my understanding.

I normally don't say this, but thank you Huntsman for basically being the sole source of new information on this show. All your work over these many months has kept me interested in the product and made my interest rise in it greatly. Anytime a new post comes in, I make sure to look at this topic, hoping there's a clip (release something already!) or image or something cool to see about the show. Great work!

I don’t have iTunes. I guess I’m not as technologically sophisticated as the rest of the world. :p However, I do have a lot of leftover Microsoft Points so I’ll probably buy every episode via Zune. However, I’ve noticed that both iTunes and Zune only have standard-definition available. In fact, none of the airings on television are listed as high-definition either. The show looks fantastic to me, but is it really not available in HD? I’d like to figure that out before I purchase the standard-definition version of the first episode.

EDIT

Well, I bought the first episode before realizing that I could just buy a season pass. So I believe I spent a bit extra, but hey, it supports the show. I just hope that it actually covers the entire season and lets me download the episodes each week without hassle or extra cost. It deducted my Microsoft Points when I bought the season pass, but it didn't give me a confirmation and Zune's purchase history is horribly uninformative. I can't actually download the first episode until tonight due to my satellite connection's bandwidth limitations, but hopefully everything works as intended. I should be able to get the episodes on both my PC and my 360.

Looks okay so far, the surrealism is deffenitly there. Now that I think about it most if not all of CN's projects have been surreal.... not that I'm complaining!:anime:

I am allowed to talk about one of the clips that I had the good fortune of seeing. Perhaps I will be able to talk about the others, in time, but hopefully this will pique some interests. The opening sequence is roughly fourteen seconds long; it is instrumental, without lyrics, but it’s primarily a visual piece. I will post some screenshots from the opening sequence and the clip in question, but please keep in mind that while these are not in widescreen, the series actually is.

I loved the opening. The visuals are a lot to comprehend and you have to see it in motion to really appreciate all of it; there was one part at the end, sort of like a kaleidoscope, that I didn’t want to take a screenshot of because the movement is what makes it enjoyable. I particularly like the expression that Gumball’s mom is making in the second screenshot; mothers in animation are seldom “fun” characters, so I’m hoping that she’ll break that trend and be a fun character.

As for the clip itself – I really enjoyed it. It was somewhat on the short side and I wish I would have known the context – why is Gumball wearing a dress, for example – but I really liked all of the voices and it’s nice seeing the animation in motion. I believe the network’s decision to cast non-traditional voice actors has paid off, as the kids actually sound like kids. The series felt like it had more in common with Chowder and The Marvelous Misadventures Of Flapjack; I am somewhat concerned by this, because Cartoon Network has had somewhat of a tonal shift since those days, but not every show needs to skew as old as Regular Show does. I am certain there is room on the network for more than one type of comedy.

I just hope that it does premiere in the states. It should. I’m just uneased by the lack of an official confirmation; I suppose all we can do is wait until the upfront and hope for the best.
