The all time best horror movie

Evil Dead (but not the sequels), The Exorcist (part III was under-rated IMO) and The Thing for me. Suspiria and Texas Chainsaw (the original) bubbling under. Ms Congeniality was pretty horrifying too.

That one particularly because it was made in 1945, is in black and white, and doesn't contain unrealistic special effects - just works at the psychological level. For this reason, it goes down as my all time best horror film.

Apart from that the Nightmare on Elm Street films were scary, but not overly so.

There's a lot of great horror films which are wonderful but not really scary. Thought Don't Look Now was genuinely spooky. I think the Japanese are doing some good stuff cause they do it completely straight faced without the jokey knowingness of US horror. Really liked original Ring and Grudge films and The Eye.

Can't believe no one has mentioned the Hellraiser films yet, I and II were both excellent and have stood the test of time surprisingly well (let's forget about III for now!). I watched Nightmare on Elm Street the other day and although it is creepy, the effects look dated and therefore some of the scare value is lost for me.

Most recent horror film that I actually liked so much I bought, was 28 Days Later. I'm sure I've seen other films recently, but they had such a huge impression on me that I can't remember their names.

Have to agree about Event Horizon, Texas Chainsaw (original) and The Thing.
