The all time best horror movie

its 1 real film yes, about a sledgehammer thats possessed by the spirit of a boy who murdered his parents (with a hammer) and whoever touches the hammer seeks to kill too

The Hills Have Eyes is another one getting remade, but I actually have high hopes for it, especially in the gore department, after all it's getting remade by the Haute Tension director. Can never remember his name.

Although it's not my favourite, the original version of The Haunting was so scary I've never dared to watch it again, even though it's probably 30 years since I first saw it (on tv too, what a wimp!)
Favourites I can actually watch:

Legend of Hell House

Wicker Man (original cut version, believe it or not: it's better when you don't realise what's going on)

Pet Semetary

Seventh Victim

Night of the Hunter

Curse of the Cat People.

The one about the guy who gets cursed, doesn't believe in all that mumbo-jumbo, but events force him to take it seriously, and he then tries to rid himself of the curse before the Demon catches him?

Probably the scariest film of the 50's. Generates a truly spooky atmosphere. Still waiting for it to get a DVD release here. Out in the U.S. as the rather over-priced "Curse Of The Demon".

I have only been able to watch it once and have vivid memories of worrying about a baby I just cannot go there any more!!! The older I get the less stomache I have for horror. I still jump at Halloween ......also does anyone remember a real ancient one "NIGHT OF THE DEMON"? Its in black and white.

Five of my personal favourite horror films, in no particular order:

Dead of Night, Ok so it bumps the list up to six but so what. Just room for one more inside, sir...

The Hitcher, A truely epileptical slasher. In fact I'm not sure I should be calling it a slasher movie at all. It's too out there for it.

The Invisible Man, A cheeky sci-fi horror with fx work that still holRAB up 70 years later.

Night of the Demon, Absolutley. Bloody. Terrifying.

The Shining, So many theories and so little time. That's why it endures. Oh yeah and "I'd sell my soul... just for a glass of beer. Hi Lloyd. Slow night tonight, huh?"

The Thing, John Carpenter's BEST horror movie and the best 'effects' horror flick ever although The Fly is a close second.

Also ran: An American Werewolf in London, The Bride Of Frankenstein, Cat People (1943), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Don't Look Now, The Exorcist, Freaks, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), The Wicker Man.

Actually it's just so hard to choose...

The exorcist will always be my favorite horror, I just love the whole good versus evil and how the story builRAB up first.

Any zombie film freaks me out, its something about the way they walk and that they're human - but not!!

Dear me, out of that above list, 2 have been remade(TCM, DotD) and 3 more are getting remade(Susperia, The Fog and The Wickerman).

Isn't it sad. :(

I have a late addition to my earlier list: it has one of the crummiest monsters ever and the direction is fairly pedestrian but with some pretty good actors and a neat story, I nominate...."Rawhead Rex"!

Horror films .... EEEK!! I usually have to switch them off halfway through.

The only one mentioned here I have been able to sit through is The Wicker Man, which I saw at a student film society and it would have been embarrassing to run out scared in the middle... but I seem to remember that it wasn't that scary, just pretty clever and wild and cool!
