The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time

You have a different definition of singer/vocalist to me. In my mind, vocals is the whole package... growling, screeching, clean singing, crooning, belching, ululating, pig squealing, African throat clicking etc... singing is just a subset of vocals.

Having said that, I think your idea of good singing is that the vocal melodies/lines are well written regardless of what the singer actually sounRAB like. But vocal melodies are definitely influenced by the music itself and whoever writes them (not necessarily the vocalist) - therefore, I don't think it's a relevant quality in compiling a list of great singers.

1. Someone brought up thom vs christina so i replied. I also didnt look at the list much cos the top ten was so much bs.

2. Despite what you think about Christina she has a far superior voice, even a fanboys love affair shouldn't cloud the judgement on that.

3. I don't hate Thom

Guns N' Roses is just Velvet Revolver without Axl. Amazing guitars but no piano or signature sound/voice(Scott Weiland...bleh.) Hate on Chinese Democracy all you want but Axl had an outstanding, unique style that made the band during Illusions and earlier.

Ok if you guys want to judge the "Best" by who can belt out more ridiculous high notes or who can hold notes longer then Christina probably wins. But then people like Robert Plant and Kurt Cobain don't even approach being on the list.

How to Disappear Completely.

The absence of Mike Patton was the biggest fail ever. But Rolling Stone is always disproportionately kind to pop and RnB artists.

I was happy to see Tom Waits there at all, but I can't imagine he got there by popular vote. Editor must have sneaked him in.

I suppose that might corrupt his ability.

Still, Angel Dust is a great record, and Patton's vocals made it work. Shame he churned out two gigantic heaps of shit with FNM after that...

Kurt Cobain shouldn't have been on the list. But it's for the same goddamn reason he was on RS' "100 Greatest Guitarists" or some shit like that.

Robert Plant, however, carries more emotion in his voice than about 90-95% of that list. Say what you will about his vocal range, but when he got on stage, he could carry a song better than anyone else.

King for a Day isn't complete crap... it starts out ok then degenerates into nu-metal dross which will inevitably be judged even more harshly due to what it influenced. There are some gems like Evidence and the title track.

Please, for the love of Pete, don't take his word for it, give both those albums a chance! :) Angel Dust is my favorite FNM album but King for a Day is their second best, IMO. It's not as cohesive as Angel Dust but it's still very good. And Album of the Year, though admittedly not that strong of an album, has enough good songs on it that it's worth a listen. In fact a couple of the better songs like "Stripsearch" and "She Loves Me Not" rank up there with my favorite FNM songs.

Heretic! :p:
