Sweeney Todd

Saw this last night and all the way through just wished they could have made that blood look more real (eg proper blood red and translucent rather than that thick gloop which just looked like paint). I know it was probably a conscious decision on Tim Burton's part to want it to have a certain cartoon quality which went quite well with his visual style but.... I don't know... it really bothered me. :( Apart from that, really enjoyed the film - Johnny Depp looked fab and really charistmatic.

What a wonderful film. I'm more of a horror film fan but I thought the music and singing was excellent, superb orchestration and arrangements. I now have the soundtrack and the songs grow on me more and more. "By the Sea" is my favourite at the moment.

You could always try the original broadway recording with Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou
You get extra songs with "The Prelude" "The Barber And His Wife" "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd"
"Kiss Me" "The Wigmaker Sequence"
and "God That's Good" is so much bigger, longer and better. It has the delivery of the chair and getting it to work which is quickly skipped over in the film with Sweeney building his chair instead.
Its a bigger song for Mrs Lovett but H.B.C. would definitely not have been able to sing it.

And please don't forget the amazing Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin in this film. He is also receiving rave reviews.

There's a very good blog review here!

I watch all of Alan's films, but this one, being given an 18!? I don't like squeamish things. I was almost physically sick watching Perfume. Arhh I don't know whether to go see it or not.

Here are a few pics to whet your appetites:

Sweeney and Turpin

The hanRABome one. :D

Alan Rickman at ST premiere USA

Short video of said Premiere - at New York I believe, earlier this month.

Enjoy!

i think that was intentional though. The film (like alot of Burton's films) has a dark look to it, so which the red paint-looking blood it stanRAB out more and is more dominant.

I saw it a couple of weeks ago, it's a pretty good movie. Actually, I barely even heard of it, it was my frienRAB who wanted to see it, and they didn't even end up liking it much. I didn't know it was a musical, but it was good, the random breakout into singing just added to the humour for me, afterall it was a musical comedy. Pretty god acting by Johnny Depp and the other people, most of whom I don't know.

Just saw this film on the weekend and I absolutly loved it! I thought JD and HBC were fantastic and of course Alan Rickman did an amzing job. The lad who played Toby put in a brilliant performance which I didn't expect at all. The sailor was a bit too wimpy for me, but it didn't spoil the film.

The only downside was that I was sitting next to a group of laRAB who groaned eveytime a song started. Seeing as the film is quite clearly a 'Musical' I felt like shouting at them to shut up! But was too scared :o

The fake -looking blood was intentional. Burton wanted to strip the violence down and make it more comical and absurd.

As for people complaining about it being a musical; how sad. What trailer did they watch? Because the international trailer featured Johnny Depp bursting into song in the middle of it - did they not find that a bit odd.

I watched it yesterday and thught it was brill!

Johnny Depp was excellent as always - and he has a pretty good singing voice.

However, best singer in the whole film has got to be Alan Rickman!

Just saw it tonight. Really enjoyed it. Thought it would be a bit scarier in parts but it all looked quite fake which I quite liked actually.

Mrs Lovett was great :D

Just got back from seeing it and it was very good, but I thought HBC was much better than JD, he wasnt bad I just enjoyed HBC more!

I expected it to be more bloody and gory! but oh well

Have to agree with you there. When I saw Anthony Head was really surprised, he's one of my favourite actors...but he was on screen for about 5 seconRAB and never appeared again!!

As to the film, I usually hate musicals, but was recommended seeing it by a friend...and to my amazement I actually really enjoyed it. Great performances all round, especially from Alan Rickman (who is my fave actor of all time!!)

Didn't find it especially gory to be honest, mostly for the fact that, as already mentioned, the blood looked more like tomato soup :)

None of the TV spots hint at it being a musical. I think most of us knew that it's a musical, but I can see how those that didn't could be kinda suprised.

I know and for a musical too! It's those pies.

I read some time ago that the cast and crew were trying to stop themselves throwing up on set as the bits of bodies and limbs looked so realistic. :D
