Sweeney Todd

If you can get through a gig which is all music then you can get through this,
its not fluffy singing and almost no dancing

It is sort of the Nick Cave or David Bowie of musicals whereas all the other musicals seem to be Steps, Girls Aloud or Same Difference.

I was not a big fan of Baron Cohen and find his creations annoying but in this role he is really good, the fact that he is playing a character playing an alias is suited to him quite well.
as such his singing is annoying because the alias is two dimensional.

I went to see this last night with the b/f and I absolutely loved it. Had no idea that JP would have such a decent voice.

Even the other half who hates any kind of musical wasn't impressed with it all. Thought the lad who played Toby was really good. He really reminded me of Jack Wild (Artful Dodger in Oliver!) and would have been great in the stage version though he would be too old now.

Sacha Baron Cohen - lol - he was v. funny.

The sailor boy character was so annoying though; so foppish and wet - but overall a great film. It has the uncanny knack of making you forget that you are watching a musical and the singing dialects are crystal clear.

Good point. I'm sure Johnny drew in a lot of female admirers. If that was the case then I'd recommend that all his female admirers go out and buy a copy of The Libertine. :)

Saw it last night. I have ridiculously high expectations and it met them. I've been waiting for this movie since it was announced and I was actually really nervous when I sat down to watch it - I was so worried I wouldn't like it after being so hyped for so long. I did though, thank God!

I was already a fan of Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman, and Helena Bonham Carter , and I love musicals, so maybe that helped a lot, but I honestly thought the film was perfect. As far as Tim Burton goes, it's his best movie since Edward ScissorhanRAB. Depp and Bonham Carter's performences are right on the money but the whole cast are wonderful. The movie is visually gorgeous to look at as well.

See it if you haven't. Hopefully you'll learn to see what all the fuss is about. :)

I adored the film and really sad that it didnt get a best film oscar nomination. Helena Bonham Carter and Ed Sanders as Toby were wonderful. I cant recommend this film highly enough. I've played the soundtrack to death and the actors voices really hold their own.

I don't which version of the trailer they were watching because the only full trailer for it I've seen has Depp singing part of Epiphany in it...

Tim Burton took his influence from Sondheim who said he wrote a musical to shock and scare you, Burton then said he wanted to make it like an old black and white classic horror film hence Johnny Depps wigs homage to the bride of frankenstein, Helena Bonham Carters dark rings around her eyes and the amount of blood that spews fourth every time a throats cut.

This never started out as your normal saccharin musical which makes it even funnier.

The rating is most probably not warranted but has been asked for by the production company who have said they hope to get the slasher fans that would normally not watch a musical into watching this, as the musical crowd would almost certainly be loyal to Sondheim and follow anyway.

And I think they might be right.

Saw this last night.
After about 20 minutes I thought "Oh God, what was I thinking?". But once the story got going, it was actually a really good film. Enjoyable.

I also thought "I wonder why this is an 18", but I soon realised :D

I've seen two TV trailers which make no allusion to musicals at all (the main one on UK TV doing the rounRAB contains one one (spoken) line), and remember commenting to my O/H that they seemed to be "pretending it's not a musical" in those.

Saw this in Las Vegas while on holiday.
Loved it - but I do love a musical too.
Very bloody - and the disposal of the bodies is pretty grim - makes you wince!
Depp is excellent but in my view HBC was better - am amazed she did not get a GG.
Costumes are brilliant and visually its stunning.
Def thumbs up from me!

Indeed - the boy playing Toby is going to go places. I couldn't stomach the sailor boy though, especially after seeing his obnxious lalala look at me I'm so famous now attitude in interviews.

Absolutely brilliant film.
I thought Sweeney was going to kill his daughter when she was dressed as Toby, rather than the beggar woman/his wife.

I haven't seen the stage version - has anything been changed for the film? (Other than some of the songs being dropped.)

Ahh so that will be rich, dark, velvety dulcet tones then, eh? :p

Alan Rickman has a gorgeous speaking voice - he could even read the telephone directory and make it sound sexy.

I have only heard him singing in Truly Madly Deeply and Help! I'm a Fish. :D I've managed thus far to avoid listening to his singing in Sweeney Todd: I've heard a bit of Johnny Depp... "I will have vennngggeannce..." LOL

Full 20-track edition. It has little bits of the dialogue at the start of some of the songs, I'm not sure if the highlights version has that. I think the main differences are that the full edition has the opening music, the beggar woman talking to Anthony outside the Judge's house, Timothy Spall's little song about stubble, and the whole 10 minute final scene (dialogue dispersed throughout, it's a bit weird).

Sadly it doesn't have the music from the closing credits on it which is a shame, because (despite being at the end) it's like an overture with all the key songs in it, it makes a nice summary of the whole picture.

I'm really looking forward to this, from the bits I have seen it looks great. I love Tim Burton as a director I always think he manages to get the right dark undertones e.g In Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are class actors as are the others names I've seen for the cast. Love the look of it so far and will definately be going to see it.
