Here's a photo:

Notice the flip open part is not a part of the phone itself, but a cover for the buttons.

Nice, clean, simple design.

Where is this simplicity of design now?

You're the first person I've heard describe the 325i as 'small'.

I mean, okay, its small compared to the E815, but then again, almost everything is.

Since I couldn't change my thread suggest replacement for LG 510TM , I am starting this new one. If a moderator could kindly close the other one, that would be great. Thanks.

Like the subject says. I used to have Verizon quite a while ago, but gave them up for their poor service. I then had LG 510TM, Nextel i530 and i560. I think I had another Verizon in there before the Nextels also. What I am looking for is the simplicity and compactness the 510 had with the ruggedness of the 530/560.

I am thinking of going back to Verizon, only through my work this time. I don't need a camera, radio, internet, walkie-talkie, or "texting". What I want is a phone that actually works.

Why are they adding on all these other features, yet the reception never seems to get any better? Why can't they take the space savings they've gained with miniaturization and add some durability or ruggedness, and reception improvements?

Am I asking too much for a reliable, simple, easy to use phone? Maybe a color screen would be a doable concession if I had to have one new feature so I could put a vacation or kid picture on there.

I liked the way the LG-DM110 had a cover for the keys, yet it was not a working (ie breakable) part of the phone.

Any suggestions?

Oh, and I have a Jeep, so a decent speakerphone is desired. That is one thing I don't think the 510 had was an external speaker.

So,
compact
rugged
good reception
speaker
simple
color screen (OK, but not required)
external view (preferably through window to save space)
calendar (510 had a pretty good one if I remember it right)

please leave out for cost and space savings and for simplicity:
radio
camera
typewriter (text messages)
humongous battery (but need decent car and AC charger)
any other extra doodads

They're interested in selling 1 million phones, not 100. They spend a lot of money on researching the type of phone that will sell. So we end up with a piece of crap like the chocolate because it can sell the pants off of any other phone.

10 or 20 years down the road when the wireless networks are opened up, then we'll really have a good selection of phones. But until anybody can make a phone that will work anywhere, we're going to be stuck with what our providers jam down our throats.

Some of the possibilities I got so far:
motorola w315
v325i
v560
U540
Slvr (which one?)
Casio GZOne
Motorola v560
Sprint Katana II
(Suncom???) Motorola Pebl
Motorola W385

Which "Slvr"? I am seeing:
Motorola SLVR L7
Motorola SLVR L7c
Motorola SLVR L7e / L7i / L71

So, are you saying everyone is an idiot?

I don't understand who would buy a phone which, first and foremost, FUNCTIONS AS A PHONE!

Really.

I'm not saying anything of the sort. I am not sure what I said wrong, but I just re-read my post it my point was quite clear.

It is all about the money. They make a phone that sells - making money is their main objective. You'd think that they would want to make a good phone and make money, but I'm not so sure that that is the case.

If you want to assume that everyone is an idiot because crappy phones sell like hotcakes, then feel free. But I sure didn't say that.

I wasn't saying that the people selling poorly operating phones are idiots, but who are the people that actually PURCHASE these?

There is a saying which goes somewhat like this:
"What you tolerate, you validate; what you put up with, you deserve."

It's CDMA, and even the smallest CDMA phone is huge compared to some of these GSM phones. The V325i is a good size, small relative to many other phones out there, especially in length. The V325i is probably about as small as you can get and still maintain the rugged feel (the LG VX-8300 is the same size). The W385 is probably a good choice as well, however I think the V325i beats it in durability.

its the slvr l7c. the katana, pebl, v540, wont work on verizon, so ask about them in other forums.
i never had that old LG, but the v325i is a really nice phone and if you dont want a camera, the w315 is basically the same thing without one.

I'd agree that its close to as small as you can get while still being rugged, but overall, it still isn't small, even for CDMA. Really, its medium-sized.

For a truly small CDMA phone, you have to look at something like the Samsung 530 or LG VX3400. I believe there's some old Motos that are even smaller still, prolly as small as anything you'd see on the GSM side.

.

That is not v540 but u540, which IS listed as working on Verizon. I don't know if it is the same phone and the v versus u difference translates into which carrier it is, but that is what it says on the www.phonescoop.com comparison page. Thanks.

welcome to the 21st century. its all like that now. money and bling I feel your pain on a phone thats just a phone but todays market demands more.
my daughters LG 8300 has been very rugged and she has no problems at all figuring out how it works.
if Verizon still sold it or if you can find one at Target the Samsung a930 is an awesome phone for simplicity, compactness , reception and durability. my a930 is THE best phone Ive ever had, though I do have/have had ones that have more bells and whistles. my wife finally gave up her 510 for a a930 and loves hers too
thats another thing; the ones that hold up wont stay for sale for too long. no repeat business that way. its all about the money

what's so bad about innovation, and features and all in oneness??.... camera, music player, phone, organizer, calculator, alarm clock, pager, easy way to send memo's or just a quick silent thought(text msg).... wake up a smell the coffee the world has changed those phones that you are talking about are 5-6 years old... is there any electronic out there that still resembles something 5-6 years old? hell VCR's are gone... 8 tracks(more than 5 years but you get the point)... cassesttes, would you rather go back to rewinding the tape, or do you enjoy the skip, functions of dvd, and CD. WOW sorry for the rant but it just seems like some one is a premadonna and need's to get over them selves because the world doens't revolve around you and companies don't cater to your needs they make what is in the best intrest of them selves and the majority of the population. IMHO
END RANT

bigdigijosh:

I think you are mistaken and that there exists a HUGE market for cell phones which, um, do nothing but act as a cell phone.

Yes, here in the real world, people do indeed still own VCR's and even cassette players.

Not everybody wants a camera phone, a typewriter phone (text messages), a gps phone, or any of that other stuff. There are a LOT LOT LOT of people who complain about shoddy reception and wish they just had a decent portable (cell) phone which worked when they needed it to work.

My quest continues...

No prob. I guess I just like that 560 phone, and am not married to any one carrier. I am looking at phones across the board (Verizon, Cingular, ATT, Nextel (yech), Sprint, etc.). It has been my experience that the providers are all pretty close and are all vultures. Therefore, it will be up to the individual phone offerings to make the decision.

The standard-bearer for me is now the DM110. Just update that with a color screen (maybe) and reduce the phone size only to build it back to original with some rugged cladding, and I'd be in heaven.

if there is a huge market for that, then there is a great investment oppurtunity for someone. Someone should get in on that.

Personally, I disagree. But I've done no market analysis, so I'm just talking out my a$$
