Oh yea, I was refering to the manga as being 'original' and how many 'steps' the product was away from the manga. Culture-wise the japanese is closest, as it is(probably) the language of the creator. But like you said, this is somewhat different and could easily be argued for pages on both sides.
In the end, it comes down to this (and many will disagree):
-It is not what the author intended, but what the audience percieves. If the author intended to write a sad story of doomsday, but a person sees it as being a hopefull scene of hope and rebirth, the 'theme' of the anime has just become one of hope and rebirth, regardless if that was the authors intention or not.
