I imagine pretty much everyone here has heard of Studio Ghibli and the amazing films it makes.. I've Finally got around to watch all of the films so far and wow clearly the forefront in animation, the narratives have such depth and the visuals are simply breath taking you just get swept away.

Personal Favorites -

Pom Poko
Castle In The Sky
Spirited Away
Grave of the Fireflies
My Neighbor Totoro
The Castle of Cagliostro

Film that you'll like if you like SG! - Tekkonkinkreet - This is one amazing film, two orphan brothers one defending the other whilst defending what he sees as 'his city'.. Pulls on the heart strings great stuff.

Anyone know when Tales Of The Earthsea is released on DVD? Wasn't fortunate enough to see it at the cinema.

I'm also a fan. I'm trying to pluck up the courage to re-view "Grave of the Fireflies": whoever described it as "the best film you'll never want to see again" had it about right.

In terms of quality animation, "Porco Rosso" is really outstanding. I also like "Gauche the Cellist", made by Takahata Isao before he joined Ghibli. The graphic style is quite different - almost impressionistic.

I found "Tales of Earthsea" disappointing. It all seems a bit flat compared with the earlier films and the story line is vague and confusing. I saw it subtitled - perhaps the dubbed version would be better. A DVD is available here http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-w/section-index/pid-1004715812/ (is that Amazon Japan??) but it's not cheap!

Much as I love all that I've seen (which is most), I have to say Kiki's Delivery Service is my favourite. I young girl in danger of ... making some new frienRAB.

So very lovely.

How could no one mention Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind!? it's my number one Studio Ghibli film, amazing. If you haven't seen it, then it's a must see.

Ugh I adore it.

I've got most of them on lovely region 3 dvRAB, and have Howl's Moving Castle in the region 2 release.

You can get Earthsea(region 3) for

I have just started to get into these films again. I few years ago, Channel 4 played a week on Anime films including Castle in the Sky, My Neighbour Totoro, The Cat Returns and some others and i loved them.
I have also watched Kiki's Delivery Service and have Spirited Away coming soon, and am getting some more on DVD in the next week or two. A few i am looking at getting are Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, Pom Poko and Howl's Moving Castle. Would people recommend these or would you recommend any different Studio Ghibli films?
Thanks

I've seen all of them except The Castle of Cagliostro (hopefully soon)

My clear out and out favourite is Grave of the Fireflies. Just blew me away the first time I saw it. Absolutely stunning in every aspect.

I've seen a few: Grave of the Fireflies, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke. They're lovely films.

I don't think I can bring myself to watch GotF again:cry:

Own 'em all on DVD. Outstanding films all. 'Course I would only ever watch them in Japanese. Dubs kill them stone dead as far as I'm concerned.

What I'd like are English subs properly translated rather than simple copies of the American dubs which often are at odRAB with the original language.

One of the sets of DVRAB that I own that I would definitely buy again on Blueray, as and when the time comes to change over.

I was at the Cardiff Animation Film Festival back in '93 and after a hard week of going from film to film and party to party (gawd bless the BBC Party- thanks to that I got to meet Chuck Jones-oh so happy) the final film of the festival was aforementioned Grave. Not a dry eye anywhere (although most blamed fatigue) and a truly stunning film which shows animation can move you. I've had it on DVD for a few years now, but fenlander's right. I haven't seen it since '93.

I love Studio Ghibli, they truely have taken Disney's place of best Animated Films IMO (and I love Disney):).

I haven't seen ALL their Films but the ones I've seen so far have definately not disspointed me. Espcially "Spirited Away", wow that Film truely did deserve it's Oscar:cool:it was just so beautiful.

Although I find "The Cat's Return" kinda creepy, I loved that one too. Has a really nice message in the end too.

"Nausica

I've not seen a Ghibli film I didn't love to bits. I'm going to try and get hold of Grave of the Fireflies after reading your comments here. I've not seen that one. But there are so many highlights. Spirited Away is absolutely phenomenal. Probably the very best animated movie I've ever seen. My Neighbour Totoro is up there too, along with Howl's Moving Castle. I also love Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery service, Laputa....

They're wonderful aren't they? :) The other ones I've not seen are Princess Mononoke, Pom Poko and Nausicaa. Looks like a blitz on the DVD sales is due! :D

Does anyone know the actual number of Ghibli films on DVD?
I currently have Kiki's Delivery Service (5), Laputa: Caslte in the Sky (6), Whisper of the Heart (11) and Spirited Away (13)

I also have coming soon Pom Poko, Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbour Totoro.

Which are peoples fave films?
I love them all, but the music in Castle in the Sky really does it for me. I love that music, its one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed. Especially the song with the lyrics in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMmSBcNSFsE&feature=related
