In September 2006, the Original Unaltered Star Wars Trilogy is coming to DVD. In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie, as well as the original theatrical edition of the film.

The release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st 2006. International release will follow on or about the same day as the US.

That's it exactly. I remember Lucas saying that the altered versions of the original trilogy were now the definitive versions of the respective films and he would not go back to the originals. What next? Director's cuts of eps 4, 5 and 6 ? An eighteen disc box set of both versions of the original trilogy, plus the later one? Proof, if further proof was needed, that creatively, Lucas is clearly a spent force.

EDIT: Are we sure this is not Lucasfilm's equivalent of an April Fools joke, given the date today? ;)

Hmmm, didn't George say that all the changes he made were what he originally wanted to do but couldn't due to budget and special effects reasons?

I know a lot of people won't buy that and that he just "tinkered" with his own movies because he wanted to...still I guess a lot of people will be happy with this. To each there own I guess. I'm quite happy with the altered 2004 version, I could give a damn whether Han shot first, it's not like it's an important plot point. :p

I would buy a 6-movie collection even if I already have all six at the moment, just because there are still some things he could fix, like the Lightsaber effetcs, CGI Yoda in TPM and so on.

I have the 1997 and 2004 ones AND the prequel trilogy, so I don't think I'll be buying it yet again, unless, as I said above, it was an all-six-movies set with more documentaries, character features and final changes made.

This news however, is sure to make my friend Chrissie really happy, *goes to tell her now*

-OH and I am so buying the second Star Wars LEGO Game. The first one is one of my fave games that I have and I always play it even after finishing the whole game! :D

I still can't believe the originals are coming out. This now means that its the end of the campaigning for them to be released.

I'm kinda disappointed tbh. Yes, it's the sort after originals. But it's the originals, as they were seen in the cinema of 1977, 80, 83. So gone are the titles Episode IV, V, VI.

Lucas has bowed to pressure and released the films, but screwed us on what he's putting out. Lucas should have released the restored VHS version of 1997, that were titled 4,5,6.

Its unfortunate that they won't be offering a 5.1 audio option on the original versions.
Although its nice to see the films as I first saw them from 1978,a modern surround mix is preferable to boring old stereo.
But while Star Wars was never called "episode 4" originally,I believe Empire Strikes Back and ROTJ DID have the episode numbers on their original release.
Anoraks please confirm this

I think they were originally released Star Wars; The Empire Strikes Back; The Return Of The Jedi. Or released SW : TESB & SW : TROTJ.

As for what's coming out, I'm still unsure what version is going to be released. I'm still hoping for the touched up picture quality of the final 1995/97 VHS release.

The Prequel boxset has to come out yet, if ever. But the 6 film set will probably happen in 2007 or in 2008 for when the TV series comes out. It might even be around the official release of Blu-Ray HD DVD's yet. It's rumoured that a CGI Yoda is replacing the puppet of Episode 1. And there's more tweaks coming for all the Episodes.

Anorak confirmation here. :D

Star Wars was retitled Episode 4 A New Hope when it was first re-released ( a year or so before Empire came out).

As technology improves and George revises all the Episodes, tweaks will be made, and I'm not bothered about them, better f'n lightsaber effects for the original trilogy is all I ask for! Especially in A New Hope. The only thing that would really bother me, would be a CGI Yoda in the original trilogy, that puppet was fine and not to mention iconic, TPM one however should die and be replaced with the CGI Yoda from Ep. II & III! :D

I don't think he'll touch it though because it was a breakthrough in believable puppetry and managed to pull it off as a character in its own right! Plus it is the staple for the CGI Yoda's that have followed it.

Thankfully it seems that TPM Yoda will be changing to CGI :D

On the episode 3 bonus disc there was a short clip of a CGI yoda implemented in to a TPM scene.

So was I but there was an element of doubt that needed confirmation and the trilogy is not in my top 10 so I'm not anal about it like I am with some other movies

Another question here;

Was the reason for no episode number in the orignal Star Wars because Lucas and 20th Century Fox had no idea it was going to be a sucess and never expected there to be sequels?
