Star Wars Blu Ray?

eyes of heart

Hi folks, does anyone have a date of if and when the star wars saga will come to blu ray, just bought the original 3 the other day on dvd and was very impressed by the clean up lucas done on the original, i know its as far back as 02 he done the restoration but its a cracking job, well done. Would love to see the job done on blu ray aswell.

Lucas is being a t**t with the blurays, he's holding back to see how well bluray takes off, when the numbers are right he'll let 'em go, apparently. The DVD's of the originals trilogy didn't make it to DVD 'til late 2004, so it's gonna while yet.

Anyone remember how it took Star Wars AAAAAAAGES to come out on DVD - all because Lucas said he wanted to wait for a Hi-def format to come out before he released them. He only relented when it became blindingly obvious that DVD had kiled VHS stone dead and taken over as the dominant format.

Fast forward to now and we have a single hi-def format. One would expect that Lucas would be jumping for joy and be well-poised to release the ultimate Star Wars release that he'd wanted to, back when DVD was a mere infant. But no, the Bearded One seems content to leave us with the DVRAB for a while longer and hold off on releaing his baby in the format he originally said he was desperately waiting to release it on.

From what I've heard, he's intending to release them on Blu-Ray once the live-action Star Wars TV series is underway. You see, Lucas cannot have anyone but himself in charge of something even as simple as a hi-def re-release of a film that is already on the market in a bazillion other formats. Unlike the rest of the inductry, Lucas cannot pass this simple task off to one of his many employees to manage and therefore, we all have to wait until The Great Beard has finished with his current project, so he can get on with micro-managing the next.

So be ready for the Star Wars Blu-Ray release sometime in 2015 - follwoed shortly after by the prequels on Blu-Ray, a complete box set of all six films, a new remastered edition, the original theatrical releases and any number of other minor modifications he can dream up to sell the films again.

Of course, by them, we'll all be asking when Star Wars is coming out on super-hi-def and Lucas won't have the time to get around to that. Expect them sometime in 2150.

I think its widely expected that hes holding back a Blu Ray release so he can do an ultimate edition box set, with even more touch ups to all 6 so that continutity and his "original vision" flow through.

God, I hope he ditches that crap Yoda puppet in TPM, and goes for the CGI one, I'm sure I saw a clip from TPM in a documentary where the Yoda was replaced, so a good sign then.

Come on Georgie boy, do the right thing.

remember lucas having a press conference on the release of the rotsith and him saying he had just wished that CGI was available during the 1st trilogy so that he didnt need go to tunisia and other places to shoot scenes etc! am i the only one that doesnt like cgi being used in films as much and prefers real film sets instead!

Oh, no, the Yoda puppet does look crap in Ep1 but the CGI Yoda looks even worse. If George Lucas wants to tinker with those scenes, I'd rather he replaced the crap puppet with a better puppet. The Yoda & Jabba the Hutt puppets from the original trilogy are proof that puppets can look good if enough effort is put into them.

I don't like overused CGI either. The special effects in Eps 2 & 3 don't even look that good....

Thing is, episodes 2 and 3 were shot almost entirely shot on green/blue screen. I think this translates heavily into the acting. They may be professionals - but they aren't miracle workers.

The ultimate editions of all 6 films have been worked on for a while now. This set I will buy but ONLY if the original films are on there too. Lucas is so stubborn about giving us the ORIGINAL versions of the original trilogy. Even if they look dodgy, surely they are still a hugely important part of a Star Wars collection.

Who knows when the set will see the light of day. Maybe when they have something else major to plug, like the live action TV series, which finally gets into production next year. The digital Yoda replacement for episode 1 was done ages ago. Hopefully that isn't the only tweak done to the prequels. IMO new cuts of each film need to be done. Episodes 2 & 3 are so bad as they are... at least episode 1 has the brilliant podrace and the best lightsaber fight ever with Darth Maul. Episode 1 is one of the most groundbreaking films ever made. Whatever you think of Jar Jar Binks he was a huge step forward, as were the armies of CGI battle droiRAB.

hes in a position where he doesn't need to rush.

theres no advantage to releasing early. more customer base = more sales. bluray is taking off, but its still early, supposedly its doing better than dvd at this stage in its life. but still waiting is no issue for lucas.
that being said he does need to go back and rerestore the original trilogy. the cg in the last effort was not quite up to par. but now tech has advanced far enough for it to be fixed. thats no bad thing.

I agree: it's simply too early for Lucas and Blu Ray. Not enough user base, and I have to say, I have a feeling it may never happen on Blu Ray at all. I reckon there's at least one more new Star Wars DVD set before he even thinks about Blu Ray, and I expect he'll skip it anyway and jump to whatever comes after that.

Are you serious?? He would be laughed at if he released anything exclusive to DVD now. Everything released now has a Blu-ray version.

Certainly am. I'll be very surprised if there's a Blu Ray Star Wars set anytime soon. It took ages for the VHS and DVD releases, and Blu Ray still hasn't captured the broader public's imagination and is some way off of doing so.

I don't agree with that at all. The Blu Ray selection in my local HMV is quickly expanding so there is obviously a lucrative market for them. Not to mention the fact that on adverts (both on TV and billboarRAB) it now says "Out now on Blu Ray and DVD", note that it says "Blu Ray" before "DVD", the same thing happened with DVD and VHS back in the day before DVD became the standard over VHS.

There are obviously HD versions of the Star Wars films available considering that Sky has shown them in the past and ITV are currently going through them and showing them in butchered HD forms (by which i mean pan and scanned versions). It may not happen quickly due to how meticulous George Lucas is with his prized posessions, but to say that he would release another DVD set and not a Blu Ray set is ludicrous. He may take his sweet time getting around to things, but he's not stupid, and there's the potential for him to make another bucket load of money by releasing it on Blu Ray. And not just the people that have already got Blu Ray players, but also from people who would buy a Blu Ray player because of the Star Wars Blu Rays.

The Blue Ray/Ultimate Editions will almost certanly be used as a tie in with the release of the live action series. The live action series is supposed to be hitting TV screens late 2011 early 2012, so I'd expect the Blue Ray/Ultimate Editions sometime around autumn/christmas 2011. Another couple of years, in other worRAB.

He clearly wants everyone to buy them on dvd (whilst there still is a market) and then when enough people have Blu-ray he will sell them in that format- making people buy both versions of his films.

A lot of people seem to be forgetting that there's already some Star Wars on Blu Ray. Both the Clone Wars movie and season 1 of the series are available, and look fantastic in HD.

I'd imagine that George is keeping an eye on how that does sale-wise before deciding on what to do and when with the live-action movies.
