But it does show that, within Trek Canon, the many worlRAB interpretation is accepted (at least for one episode... we all know what Trek continuity is like)...Parallel timelines/universes, branching off at different points due to different actions/choices etc. Trek has also shown it before with the Mirror Universe, which IIRC has been featured in every TV series apart from TNG.
So, if - within the world of Star Trek - time travel to the past was actually possible, plus the MWI is correct, then surely time travel to the past would cause different timelines to branch off.
Besides, this is Star Trek. It's science fiction. And I think Helbore is right regarding the whole timeline thing - it's just so that they can reboot the series without actually calling it a full "wipe the slate & piss off the fans" reboot.
Well, to be fair to Orci, he is the writer of a science fiction action movie, not a physicist.
As for time travel in general not being possible in the real world... well, so what. Trek is SF, & every series, as well as two of the previous movies, have featured time travel. It's not like ST2009 is the first to have time travel to the past, in violation of scientific theory.
