STAR TREK Appreciation #1: In 2009 comes a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time

 That definitely seems to be the case, from what I've heard so far too. I really wish we'd gotten to see Spock's birth scene, because I'm sure it's shown in one of the trailers, but it'll probably be a deleted scene on the DVD now. And the whole issue with Jim having a brother is interesting, although I can't help but think they changed that for the movie because it's almost irrelevant, in a sense, and there's not enough time to really delve into that side of his family. I think that's the main reason they changed so much of it, including how certain scenarios played out.

That's why I do like novelisations though, because they're good for fleshing out specific scenes and adding a bit more depth - plus if there's any ambiguity for the audience, it's cleared up with whatever the answer is in the book.

Aaaw, that makes me sad :( But in another sense, I suppose if I really think about it, I could see why you might not see it (even though it pains me to say that!). I suppose all I can in defense is that since they were just establishing Spock and Kirk as friends in this, and especially since they come from enemies first, there's not really much room for the epic friendship to come through by the end of the film. I think we're just supposed to get a hint of things to come next time.

Hahaha, I don't blame you. They really do have a special friendship, I love how Bones couldn't leave Jim behind and found a way to get him on board the Enterprise, at the risk of his own career! It says a lot about his character, especially since later he tried to take the blame for what he thought was Jim being crazy on the bridge. He always stands by him. Except for that one time with Spock, but he felt hella guilty about that.

Ohh yeah, that's who I meant. Forget the rest of the random crew, I'm talking about the main guys  I'm looking forward to seeing more of Scotty, Sulu and Chekov especially, and seeing how they all interact and fit with the rest of them.

Also, yay Chris!!! :yay: Who got #1, out of curiosity?

I can't believe the girl who's playing Uhura. She's the only one who's familiar to me and I find it hard to take in.

The guy who's playing spock looks great.

Me too! I might be seeing it with my friend on friday and I am hoping to take my parents to see it next weekend. My dad used to watch the show with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

Thats what i loved about the movie is that they focused more on the characters and there background.

Haha, I bet that's cool. But the novelization is great. I'm learning a lot about the fandom. But, geez, there's so much in the book that wasn't included in the film. And it's all so good.

I really didn't. I love Zachary Quinto, don't get me wrong -- he can play one of the best villians I've ever seen next to Anthony Hopkins and Cillian Murphy -- but I didn't catch the epicness of his friendship with Jim. Maybe I'll get it with the next movies.

I think I was just too hung up on the friendship Jim has with Bones to notice what's going on with Spock.

I did read your review on your LJ and I agree with a lot of it. All the relationships are going to develop in the next couple films and I can't wait to see how it all pans out. I mean, I agree with them being a big family. Maybe not the hundreds on the ship, but I definitely see the main people (Jim, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Sulu, Chekov, Scotty, etc.) becoming just one dysunctional family who, obviously, will do anything to protect each other. Jim already proved that with Sulu and Spock.

P.S. Chris is #2 on People magazine's Hottest Bachelor's list!!

I have heard nothing but great reviews about this movie. I can't wait to be able to see it hopefully this weekend.

Zoe Saldana Talks To io9 About Star Trek

We caught up with Zoe Saldana, who plays Uhura in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. While she couldn't reveal too much about her work in Trek and James Cameron's Avatar, she did give a little bit of a behind the scenes look into both. Plus she addresses whether the skirts in the new Trek will be shorter than in the original series

Were you a Star Trek fan before the movie?

I did watch a couple of episodes. I followed J.J.'s advice. He said, "If I have to advise you guys at all, I would advise you not to watch [Star Trek]. Just inform yourself of the whole concept of Star Trek, if you're not already a Trekkie or fan. I don't want you to cloud whatever contribution you guys can make yourselves to the role that you are jumping into." I thought that was very encouraging. And then I met Nichelle Nichols and she practically gave me the same advice. So I thought that I needed to make the important aspects about Uhura a priority.

Well, out of the episodes that you did you watch, what were your favorites?

Definitely the episode with Abraham Lincoln [The Savage Curtain] and the episode where Kirk and Uhura have that kiss [Plato's Stepchildren], because of what that kiss represented at the time as well. I spoke to Nichelle about it. She talked about how that work was very dear to her and how they had no idea how big it was going to be. Back then they had no idea that Star Trek was going to be what it is now. They were just artists doing a show that was putting money their pockets, as artists they were working, and they were very grateful to be doing that. She also said as artists, you always live way ahead of your time, so it wasn't a big deal for her. They were aware of what the world was like, but they didn't know it was going to stir up so much.

Where did you build your character from? Did you pull stuff from the script?

Reference pictures, speaking to Nichelle Nichols, talking a lot to J.J. After I met Zach Quinto and Chris Pine, that changed a lot, talking to them. For some reason's Zach's Spock and Chris' Kirk brought out my Uhura. The conversations and sharing the knowledge of Star Trek, it was all really good. And I saw all the physical things that were important about her that the fans need. It was a mix of all of that.

Speaking about what the fans want, what about Nichelle's voice? It's legendary did you work on recreating that at all?

The one thing I can tell you is that I know in my heart that the fans are not going to be disappointed. When they see Star Trek they are going to see all of the characters that they've been in love with. The way the plot is laid out, it's not going to compromise the whole legend of Star Trek. If I did imitate the voice I think J.J. and Nichelle managed to get it out of me with out making me feel like I was stepping on anyone's shoes. Maybe it came out here and there.

Did you meet ahead of time with Chris and Zach ahead of time to build a relationship since the movie is about how everyone met and came together?

Everything went so fast we really didn't have much time and I was shooting Avatar [a little more on that later] and they sort of overlapped. But when we started working, the chemistry was inevitable. It was a great set. Chris and Zach could not have been better cast. I can't even tell you if I met the real Zach or the real Chris, because they were so committed to their character.

Do you feel the pressure form fans and media to deliver?

I think maybe that's why J.J. didn't want us to watch every single episode and go that extensively into the research. He knew that there would be a point when we would confuse the responsibility and turn it into pressure. He wanted us to keep it light and fun. He just kept saying, "just trust me, trust me it's going to be great."

What about the rumors that the skirts in this new Star Trek are shorter than the show? Did you think so, was it hard working in a mini?

I'm actually still waiting for the phone call from Paramount producers saying, "You know what Zoe? That skirt wasn't short enough." After watching the show...those skirts were pretty short. If you made them any shorter, it would be a t-shirt. I think they're going to be happy. But the funny thing is, I don't think we went far enough.

What actor went through the most transition?

I think we all did because at times I would think that it was Zachary turning into Spock. But then Chris Pine would walk onto the set in the morning with his blown out hair doing the Kirk walk. We were all transforming ourselves into these characters.

I what was it like working with all the old cast members, like Leonard Nimoy?
Mind boggling. Leonard is the classiest artist I've ever met, by far. He has such grace and his energy and his approach are amazing. After all these years and he just puts on his Spock shoes and transforms into Spock. When his character comes to life it blew everyone away. When I heard Nichelle was on the set I nearly died. I'm sure for Zach it was the same. You are trusted with this precious stone and you have to babysit and make sure you deliver it properly because it was created way before you. And it's going to be living way after, so you need to deliver. That responsibility was kind of humbling.

Tell me about being a one of the few women on the Enterprise?

I think it's awesome. To be on the Enterprise with all these guys, the message speaks loudly. She's a female, she's of high rank and she has her **** together. And never is it ever about, or was it ever about her female presence. It was pretty great. I loved being the only girl.

Don't you just love it when a movie goes the opposite direction of what most people expect? :D

Oh cool, you have the novelisation? I'd like to get that eventually, I only have the audiobook at the moment. Which is fun in itself, to be fair, considering that ZQ reads it

Wow, really, you didn't get the appeal behind Spock/Kirk? Not even the basis of the epic friendship? My knowledge is limited too because I'm not an original fan, but I kinda understood that obviously their relationship is at the heart of the show, and whatever verse ST happens to be in. It doesn't mean I like the slash, though :look:

I loved Jim and Bones' relationship too, they're quite obviously BFFs. I said this in my review but I just adore the different relationships between the whole crew in general, there's so many dynamics to play with there, but it's obvious they're all super-close and like this big family. I cannot freaking wait to see more of that portrayed in the future films!

Definitely. He deserves some. I'm reading the novelization right now and I just passed the point where Sarek (I think) says that to him. Good dialogue in there.

Awe, really? I adore you, I really do.

I'm curious about who everyone ships because I know the major slash ship is Kirk/Spock; I've just never understood that.

Then again, my knowledge of Star Trek remains only with the new film so I don't know too much about the fandom within. I'm a big Jim/Bones shipper, friendship and love. And I think Spock/Uhura is cute.

Thanks! I felt like after the Kirk stuff, I should show some Spock love too :D

I ship Kirk/Spock in the sense that I LOVE their bromance and epic friendship, but I don't slash them. I do ship Spock/Uhura though, I just love their relationship and I think they're awesome together.

By the way Jenny, I left you a special birthday post the other day, on my LJ, you should check it out if you get a chance! ;)

I used to watch some of Star Trek when I was younger, though I was never a huge fan. But I am SO excited about this movie  Namely because of J.J. Abrams at the helm :thud: And Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and John Cho? Hell yeah!

I have probably seen some of it by chance and know some of the characters names but never ever got interested in it, so this movie will be a good way of knowing what Star Trek is all about lol

Thanks for the thread! I'll go ahead and admit I've never seen one second of Star Trek. This will probably be the first Star Trek anything I will ever see.
