Sprint Android Phones: Hero vs. Intercept

I have gotten sick of my Blackberry Tour. Terrible reception in areas where I had no problems with my Curve 8330m, terrible battery life, and a slow, clunky, and boring OS. After seeing my dad's awesome EVO, I have decided Android is the way to go. The current two devices (besides the monstrous EVO and soon to be released Epic 4G) are the HTC Hero and the Samsung Intercept. I like the Hero for Sense, the ability to root (which I'm sure will be available on the Intercept soon), and HTC's awesome build quality. However, there is no hardware keyboard, which may be a problem, at least when I first use it. Additionally, in a few months, the device will be a year old, which may mean updates may stop regularly coming in. I like the Intercept for the hardware keyboard and the "newness" of the device. However, I have owned 2 touchscreen Sammy phones in the past (Eternity and Impression for AT&T) and have had terrible experiences with the screen and build quality. I realize that this may not be an issue, since the screen is capacitive and it is a smartphone, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to trust Samsung again.
Please give me some advice on this issue! Thanks!

I feel like I should, but one of the two will happen:
1. My dad won't let me, because of course, he MUST have a superior phone.
2. The EVO won't be in stock at my store, leaving me days and weeks before I can get one and still being stuck with the Tour. >

Never seen the Intercept to judge. But I own the twin of the CDMA Hero, the Droid Eris. Its really very nice, especially updated to Android 2.1 plus fixes. As you can see from my profile, I also own some superphones too, and for what its worth, the Droid Eris just works, and comes with a size that is more convenient than the superphones, which is why the Droid Eris remains my daily driver. The size and form factor is just a direct bullseye.

But this is just the lesser of the two options. I would also pick the EVO here which is getting the Android 2.2 Froyo update this wednesday too. The next choice after that would be the Samsung Epic, which is a Galaxy S with a keyboard expected later in August. I don't think you may like the physical body feel of the Epic, if other Galaxy S is considered, but physically the plastic they use is quite durable. The 4" Super AMOLED screen of the Epic is a stand out, and Samsung's own bundled widgets are as good as HTC's. The iPhony look of the Touchwiz 3.0 is a turn off, but the UI also has a number of nice touches I wish HTC Sense had, like a better lockscreen and notification bar approach. The main differentiating factor of the Epic is having a physical keyboard. The Galaxy S appears headed for Froyo updates starting in some countries this September, which is going to hit the Epic sometime as well.

So in conclusion,

My first pick would be the EVO even if I waited.

My second pick based on a physical keyboard would be the Samsung Epic.

My third pick, while less than flashy, would be the Hero if you need a more convenient size.
