One more question. What is the impact to the consumer of the bev space crunch? I don't get that. Does it mean I'll suffer once I subscribe? Does it mean they aren't taking new customers?

Bell can not add any more HD channels (there is no more space on their satellites). Edit: this statement is false.
Shaw has more room for HD and Rumour has it that Shaw will have an additional 20 HD channels this fall.
Bell compresses their HD signals and signal substitutes inferior Canadian HD channels over US ones.
Rogers is not available in Calgary... It is only in Ontario/ NB/ Nfld.
Shaw's PVR is quite reliable in CGY and its 2 week guide is unbeatable... although some folks will have issues and others aren't fond of the $748 price tag although it can be found for cheaper if you search our DHC threads. NHL Centre Ice is only available on Bell... but Rumour has it that it will be available this fall too. For the long road the safe bet is Shaw.
If you want to hedge your bets, you can lock yourself in for a 1 year rental Bell and see if Shaw passes them.

I stand corrected on transponder space...
However, things like MLB Extra innings HD are being compressed 3 channels to a space normally reserved for two. This leaves a picture which is compressed to a signal level that some say is comparable to wide-screen SD.

The reasoning given by Express Vu for the 3 HD feeds on one transponder is that as MLB is not a "fast moving" sport when compared to Football for example, they feel that the slight loss of Picture Quality is acceptable.
Please note this is the answer I got from Express Vu, not my interpretation.
Whilst I might not agree with them it does seem the most logical place to save some bandwidth, although if I were paying for the MLB HD feed into my lounge I would feel cheated.
I personally think that all the Express Vu offerings that are broadcast in 720p are substandard HD and feel very strongly that HD should be 10801 or 1080p ONLY.

I feel pretty cheated because most HD channels do not give HD full time, I feel cheated because I think HD should be 1080i.
Maybe Express Vu miscalculated, like they do with most things.
It is now up to the Customers to call and complain about the PQ although I don't see anything being done in the near future.

Rumors of what Shaw is going to do have a history of being highly unreliable, so I wouldn't put much stock in them. Besides, even if they do add 20 channels only people in Calgary will likely get them, the frustrating thing with Shaw is how patchy their channel availability is.
In my city (on the far east of their territory I believe) we get 10 channels.....woohooo, contrast that to EV's offering. And that 10 includes 1 movie channels and does not include specialty channels.

We discuss on another topic that 3 TP are not allowed to BEV on satellite 82. How it works if Bell wants these 3 TP ?
So we know that Bell will add CBC HD West, TVA HD, TQS HD and RDS HD and we know that they need to add Showcase HD, National Geographic HD and MMOre HD to stay competitive.
It's 7 HD channels, the conclusion is simple :
Bell need the 3 TP that they don't hate rights to use it or they need to do more compression to enter 3 HD channels per TP...Or go with a fantastic solution that called : 8PSK...

If Bell are serious to stay the leader of the HD programming in Canada, they will comme with a solution.
All users here know the best solution in short delay are 8PSK. Bell has around 20-25 TP with HD, go with 8PSK and you can add 1 HD channel per TP WITHOUT reduce the quality, so 20-25 new HD channel.
The ball is on the hand of Bell...sorry, Teachers. What's the new owner will be doing with Express Vu ? Keep it ? Sell it ?

As a teacher, my first order of business would be to send out a "Grammar and Spelling Guide" to the above poster.
I would assume that BEV will either switch to 8PSK (the 6100 and 9200 are capable already, aren't they?) and that will ease the HD crunch. Is it possible to only use 8PSK for the HD transponders, and use the current standard for the SD channels, thereby getting around any hardware upgrades for non-HD customers?

Yes, the 6100/9200 are 8PSK units as is the 6000U.
Yes, you can change modulation on a per TP basis.
Dish does that now with QPSK for SD and 8PSK for their HD with a mixture of MPEG2 and MPEG4.
But the MPEG is not mixed on a transponder either.
They would still need to swap out all the 6000 units to an 8PSK capable unit PLUS all the commercial gear in the SRDU side of things.
That won't happen very quickly and by that time it's so near the MPEG4 swap or the point will be moot if the churn escalates as predicted and their HD base doesn't justify it or the business will be up for sale again and all projects on hold.
Teachers needs to fix it or FCKU it.
Keep in mind that not everybody's native tongue is English, so expect grammar mistakes, it doesn't makes them any less intelligent, it's just a bit more confusing to read the first time through.

The quality of the MLBEI HD channels (3 squeezed onto 1 transponder) is not HD quality become of overcompression. It is not acceptable. Most Primetime shows aren't "fast moving" I hope that those channels don't get squeezed the same way.
I know that you are just repeating what was said, but you mention it in a way to say that it is a good idea. It isn't. I spent big bucks on a HDTV, HD PVR, and $10 a month for HD Pack for "HD PQ" not something far worse than that.

Evu is doing the right thing by limiting the number of HD channels.......what is the point of using bandwith for channels that only carry one or two programs in HD. A lot of noise from a few subscribers when the majority really do not care one iota about HD channels. If you do not like your carrier then switch to someone else, if you can, this continual whinning and complaining is getting a bit redundant. And finally guess who will be complaining when the HD prices go up. No I am not totally satisfied with Evu but the alternative of staring at a test pattern is not that appealing. Enjoy the programing.....the quality of the content of a program has little to do with 1080 or 720....it only adds to the enjoyment factor. A lousy program remains a lousy program in HD or not. As Bartle and James used to say......"thanks for your time"
