South Park - "Mysterion Rises" - Talkback [11/3]

I liked the comic book panels they were using for the various character viewpoints....

and it turns out Kenny IS Mysterion(while I did think it was a possibility,I thought they'd end up just having it be some random kid)...The only reason I thought of it last week was that I was watching the last episode with my brother, and he said something like "Wouldn't it be funny if Kenny was Mysterion?" (because he's rarely spoken without being muffled through his orange parka....the only other times I can think of are the movie and Meet the Jeffersons)
...I figured out what his power would be just before he said it (he can't die)...Nice use of a previously used ability of Kenny's (that he used to die every week, then come back like nothing happened)....
Also,it was funny when Cartman/Coon befriended the Cthulu....I missed the reference to Totoro (I've only seen the movie once, and it was a long while ago....I just thought they were referencing The Neverending Story )....

I missed last weeks episode and caught this one halfway through the recap at the beginning, and thought that was a special kind of opening, meant to set-up the plot. So I wondered how the others' knew that Cartman was The Coon (as most of them didn't seem to know it was him, though some suspected it). And it took awhile for me to figure out who most of the other heros were. I thought Butters was one of the heros, until I saw the scene with Professor Chaos and the heros in the basement (he couldn't be two identities at once).

If not for the commercial for the conclusion that appeared at the end (and what I read in this thread) I wouldn't have known there'd be another part to this (they really need to bring back "to be continued..."... Whan's the last time that note was used in a production, anyway?). I thought the way this episode ended would have been a good way to end the episode, without the need for a proper continuation.

Well, I'll admit that this week was a step up from last week. I liked the parts where Cartman befriended Cthulu, especially when he went on that rampage. Though I can't help but think that him saying "I'm the King of everything" would have made it more hilarious. The usage of comic book art to describe certain scene was also a nice treat as well.. Kenny being Mysterion does make a lot of sense, I did like how Kenny lampshaded how whenever he dies and comes back, no one even cares anymore.

They have a lot of subplots to rap up in the last part. First, there's the question of Kenny's powers. Is it possible he's also an eldritch horror like Cthulu, and only looks human?

And what about Jack Roland? Will he stay normal, or become a superhero again to team-up with Mysterion against Cthulu?

It seems like even Tony Hayward is going to get his own character arc resolved. Will he find a way to redeem himself, or will he try to solve the problem by drilling again?

Awesome episode, which is a three-parter like the epic Imaginationland trilogy, sweet!!!!!

The highlights:
Mysterion's comic introduction was awesome.
Woooow, what a reversal on the superhero boys which Kyle is the Human Kite, Clyde is Mosquito, and Bradley is Mintberry Crunch(who has more lines), nice.
The Coon/Eric beating up the girl was funny, hahahaha:p:D.
Captain Hindsight's comic origin introduction and his 3 sidekicks, Shoulda, Coulda, and Woulda was great.
Captain Hindsight being a drunken butthead was funny.
Kenny as Mysterion was surprising/awesome, WOOOOOW:eek::D!!!!!!
The Coon/Eric selling his soul to join Cthulhu was shocking/great, but he did joined other villains before like David Blaine/Wal-Mart/Bart Simpson which was sweet though.
Mysterion is amazing to have immortal power after having alot of deaths, hehehe.
Mysterion making Captain Hindsight into a better person was great.
Captain Hindsight/Mysterion/The Coon joining Tony Hayward in the commercial was so funny.
The LeBron James Nike commercial reference was nice.
The Coon's comic scenes were cool.
The Coon/Eric being creepy on Cthulhu was priceless.
Cool to see Mr.Adler, the 2 geeks, the Goth Kids, and Nelson joining the Cthulhu cult.
The goth kid bashing the Disney Channel was funny.
The little goth kid's hardcore lines was awesome.
The My Neighbour Totoro song/Neverending Story reference was epic:eek::anime:.
The comic scene with the Coon(Eric)/Cthulhu destroying the city was funny/sweet.
Mysterion dead and Kenny being resurrected in his home was a sweet cliffhanger.
I'll definetly enjoy Part 3 of The Coon/Mysterion 2 trilogy next Wednesday!!!!!!

I bet you when the Comedy Central execs watched the end of this episode dollars signs lit up in their eyes. Can't wait til "Coon and Friends: The Movie (UNCENSORED)" hits stores next March.

Honestly, while this episode was better than the last, there's something low-key and kind of lazy about the story writing here that doesn't make me care like it did for "Imaginationland". Yes, the exploration of Kenny (loved his reveal) and his inability to die piqued my interest, but all what's happening around it is not deserving of its own DVD, and because I know that will be the end result, I can't help but roll my eyes.

They should have left this as a two-parter, and surely things could have been cut to resolve the story. (That LeBron Nike parody was the most obvious filler)

Kenny does talk when he's Mysterion! Well, Kenny woke up after Mysterion was killed off by the goth trio at the end - It was a dream?

Well, the conclusion of the COON ARC is next week, this is another 3 parter like 2007's Imaginationland trilogy.

No that was Kenny's super power...
Everytime he dies he just wakes up in his bed the next day and no one even remembers him dying.

best. retcon. ever.

I thought every time Kenny died Mr. and Mrs. McCormick just had another baby right away and named it Kenny. Also, I wonder if they'll reference the fact that Kenny actually "died" for an extended period in Season 6.

When this episode gets subbed in too Japanese by a subbing group, I hope Miyazaki or a Miyazaki fan doesn't take it the wrong way. Miyazaki makes all his movies with beautiful, innocent, pacifist, and child like ideals that everyone in Japan loves. To see Totoro be parodied by a beast known for hate and pain probably is gonna upset him if he catches wind of this. I did like the Totoro song and Mei and Totoro parodys. Suprised though since I doubt much of the SP audience knows who Totoro, though I could be wrong.

For some reasons that moment struck me more as a Neverending Story moment. The only reason I am siding with it being a parady of Ghibli is because Trey Parker has admitted to being a Japenophilia.

Wow, between 200, 201, and now this arc, South Park is sure giving a treat to the continuity fans this year.

It makes perfect sense for Kenny to be Mysterion, they may not even have thought of it in his first appearance, but it pretty much had to be either him or Clyde this time around (and again, I could see Cartman beating on Clyde more than Kyle or Kenny, so he had to be Mosquito). They actually did a lot for Kenny's character, interacting with his parents, his conversation with Captain Hindsight, etc.

There are some continuity snarls, of course. Wasn't Cartmanland also the episode where Kenny was mad that Stan was moping over Kyle's impending death, saying something like "You don't give a s---- when I die!" Maybe he didn't figure out about the memory wipe until later.

I do like how he acknowledged that sometimes he goes to heaven and sometimes he goes to hell since we've seen him in both.

As for Cartman in this episode, that was great his moment of hindsight and then just deciding to be the jerk he always is. The Totoro thing didn't occur to me, I was more thinking Neverending Story.

Wow, I was way off on just about everybody's identity.

Actually, I'm enjoying this much more than the Imaginationland episodes. This story has me more on the edge of my seat than that story did.
