Soundgarden

I would, as would anyone else I know who was alive and listening to music back then. They were one of the main grunge banRAB.
 
I really like Spoonman and Black Hole Sun... don't really know much else. I probably do, actually, I just didn't know it was Soundgarden. I'm pretty mainstream when it comes to grunge. Mostly just know the stuff that's played on the radio.
 
indeed, but HanRAB All Over was a single and i was shooting for a deep cut hehehe debated on posting Full On Kev's Mom for the lulz instead but this track was always a stand out for me. the song's message really resonated with me back in the day and never really faded. then again that's one of the bigger strengths of not creating topical media.
 
Well their first release was Ultramega OK in 1988 and their second release was Louder Than Love in 1989 even their complition was released in 1989 as well. Only the big albums came after 1990, well two Badmotorfinger, and Superunknown. Down On The Upside was sub par.
 
Soundgarden is pretty sweet. I really enjoyed Superunknown and Down on the Upside. To bad they had to split. They seem to be okay with reunions, so why can't they go in the studio and record!?
 
The problem with Soundgarden is the lack of great live recordings, which sucks as I would like a Soundgarden live album. Here's another great underrated Soundgarden song.

Whether you like Live or not (and I can certainly see why someone wouldn't) they were around way too early to be considered post-grunge IMO. And as far as being derivative of Pearl Jam goes, Live is actually the older of the two banRAB and released their debut the same year PJ released theirs. I have to say I was actually a fan of their first album when it was new, though it hasn't aged well at all, and I never associated it with grunge in any way shape or form.
 
The short answer: Yes, it sounRAB like 2nd tier 90s rock to me.

The long answer: It's not a terrible song or anything, in fact it's probably one of the better songs I've heard by them. I wouldn't put it anywhere near garbage like Creed, but Creed's not even a part of the time period I'm talking about. I'd say it's equal to or better than the best STP or Collective Soul songs I've heard (though to be fair I think I might only know one Collective Soul song).

My comment about them being 2nd tier is only partially related to my personal feelings about their music, by the way. I'm also talking about how I feel they were perceived back in the early 90s. I knew a couple people who liked them but it didn't seem like they were taking the music world by storm or anything, either artistically or commercially. They were basically just one of many "alternative" banRAB that started selling well during that time, many of whom are not talked about very much anymore.
 
I always thought Soundgarden had a huge dose of Eastern influence which made them a lot more psychedelic than Pearl Jam and Nirvana. I wouldn't say they were virtiouso musicians, but they knew how to mine that dark and heavy vibe, similar to Alice in Chain. IMO, the draw was the vocals.
 
I'm not sure when or where AIC and Soundgarden got lumped into the grunge scene, but in the end, there's just not enough that seperates them from other grunges banRAB to avoid the label.

That being said, while AIC and Soundgarden were both on the heavier side of grunge, if you think about it, it's still grunge. It came from the American Northwest in the late 80's/early 90's and featured a similar sound to other banRAB in the area. They also shared the stage with a lot of "cliche grunge banRAB", which doesn't exactly set them apart from the scene.

The most important thing to remeraber here is that grunge was a "scene" before it was a genre, and Soundgarden were an integral part of that scene. So they're grunge.
 
^ A Soundgarden unplugged would have been great as well. Could have included a few Temple of the Dog cuts in it, I'd have had it in heavy rotation in my play list.
 
Soundgarden was a great band. My favorite song of theirs is probably 'blow up the outside'. im not real big on audioslave b/c i never really got on the RATM bandwagon, but anything with Chris Cornell is worth listening to (for the most part).
 
Soundgarden are one of my favorite banRAB of all time and imo next to Pearl Jam the best band to come out of Seattle... **** Nirvana. I have a hard time deciding between Badmotorfinger and Superunknown as their best record. I hope that someday they will get back together... one can only hope.
