Something I have been thinking about lately....(Serious thread)

(On a side note, I hate all this April fool's day crap, it takes away from what these forums are really about and it really makes the forums look like a spam riddled joke.)Anyway. I was thinking about something over the past few days after a man and a woman came into my store and the woman made a comment to the man along the lines of, "Jeez, I cant believe a man in his 30's is watching cartoons.", and then when the customers were done picking out their movies they made a comment to my face and asked me why I was watching them. I was a little baffled at why they were being like that so I responded with, "I enjoy them, I always have." and they shot looks at me like there was a problem with me and left the store. So, is it weird that I am in my early 30's and enjoy animation enough to watch it as often as I do? It just bothers me that these comments were made right to my face and these were not the first people to ask my age, or to raise an eyebrow at my television likes. I don't know the ages of the people on these boards, but I would imagin it's a solid range of teens to adults, am I wrong on this? Is watching cartoons wrong when you become an adult? I would like to hear peoples comments, outlooks and advice on this topic.

The forums are supposed to be a spam riddled joke today. It's supposed to be the antithesis of what TZ is really about. That's part of the joke.

Too bad not everyone's paying attention to it (see: the Too Nami thread). Though I've noticed you're playing along by not creating an Orihime worship thread like you did last year.

See, the problem with those individuals is that they have the wrong perception of maturity. Maturity is about:

- Showing civility towards anyone regardless if they are friend/family/stranger, which those people failed to do obviously.

- Refraining from making a gross noise in public.

- Keeping your voice at a low volume in certain public areas.

- Refraining from passing gas or excusing yourself if you can't.

People who make statements or implications that animation diminishes their maturity, are ego maniacs who like to believe that watching certain shows will make them superior to others.

X already beat me to it. But it's more a potshot at me more than an actual worship. Some friend he turned out to be.

Did you see Marvin Tikvah, I'm flattered yet slightly offended.

I actually think we're controlling ourselves a lot more this time around, though. More thoughtful, not as random. Though the Cafe is the Cafe.

This is why I plant to do all my buying via Amazon in the future. I'm not quite at the age where people look at me weird yet, but I'm slightly self-conscious anyway, and I don't want to be judged by some random people who don't know me for my taste in television:shrug: Awful that that happened; even people who do think cartoons are immature should at least be decent enough to leave people alone about it.

Stuff like this has happened before to me. I remember once my grandma was surprised to find out that I still watch cartoons...when I was 11!

I think that's its not just that they are cartoons, but its that they are designed for children. I don't know what you were buying but if you were buying something like South Park or Family Guy the lady probably wouldn't have cared.

Most of my family is really quite open to cartoons. My older brother is 27, has a wife, kid, 2 dogs, and a giant stash of cartoons, so I doubt it's something to be ashamed of.

Besides if anyone looked at me cross eyed, I'd tell them the truth. Toons have more substance than half of what they watch.

:^: This! and as ive said before, despite being as technologically advanced as we are there our a disturbing amount of TRULY immature & Downright idioctic people in the world these days, I had a simmilar problem today at school, (Im in high school by the way!) anywho a kid that sits behind me was making a number of vulgar jokes and insults about the class so I turned around and in a calm deminur asked him to be quite, and told him to stop acting so childish & then he pointed out how i had no right to judge since i was reading a comic, I then spent 10 minuts explaining how comics are an artform and another 10 about the True deffinition of maturity, after I was done the poor lad had such a dumbfounded look on his face i could'nt help but laugh & in the end we were both cracking up, he agreed to tone down his jokes & I agreed to try to not let things like that bother me so easily, ahh High school life can be silly at times! :p :D

I've come across loads of people like the couple you encountered, Cottonswab. People with ideas in their heads as to what people should and shouldn't like at certain ages and genders (and perhaps even races), and probably raise their eyebrow at just about anyone who has a specialist interest or rare hobby. Their remarks and responses can be really disheartening, but I wouldn't pay them too much attention - they simply don't deserve it. If your likes and dislikes don't fall in line with their preconceived notions of what one should and shouldn't like, then screw 'em!

I used to perhaps pay more attention to this kind of person than I should have, but not anymore. I enjoy what I enjoy, and pay no attention to some narrow-minded individual who sees fit to insult someone on that very basis. I simply accept the fact that these kinds of people are around, and that I'll get this kind of reaction from time to time - I don't know if that'll make it easier for you in the future, but it has for me.

I doubt the guy had too much of a beef with it though...sad to say, but dudes seem to be more cool with watching cartoons as opposed to some girls(unlike our own TZ chicks). I was on campus at Purdue last friday for my once a week class, and was in the lounge and had CN on the plasma and one of the guys I knew walked by and was like, "Tom and Jerry man, that was my "crap"(but you know what he actually said)...they don't make them like that anymore." And he sat there for a couple minutes and we were just chillin' watching Cousin Muscles beat the crap out of Tom. I'm 31, and he's like 28.

Most of my immediate family is fine with cartoons. My dad is almost 60 and is a big fan of Nicktoons. My sister and brother-in-law enjoy a random show like Arthur and many Disney movies. So I've never had them tell me I should stop or move on. I'm in my late 20s, by the way.

Outside of my family and offline, I'm not very open about it and probably wouldn't mention it unless somebody else brought it up first, so people haven't really had the opportunity to comment.

Ive noticed this as well, I don't want to sterotype but it seems for the most part as the average female gets older they get more attracted to Romance & tweencoms over cartoons while males, most of the ones I know anyway, Keep there love of animation while gathering other interests. I mean im only 17 i still love animation most of the other guys at my school like it decent enough, but the girls, oy vay! any day we have a free day in a class they wanna turn it to Lifetime of Mtv, Instead of somthing good like CN or ESPN! Oy vay! kids these days!:anime: :p

Enjoying cartoons (regardless of what age group said cartoon is intended for) has no bearing on one's level of maturity. I define maturity as:

  • Not throwing a temper tantrum when you don't get your own way.
  • Being able to turn the other cheek when someone says or does something that you find off-putting.
  • Being able to disagree with someone or allowing someone else to have their own opinion, even one that you personally don't agree with without being rude or disrespectful.
  • Only disagreeing with the opinion, and not with the person who has the opinion.
That's my definition of maturity. if you do that, I personally don't care what you're into. I know plenty of adults who still collect dolls and action figures, but that doesn't make them any less adults in my book.

Well I used to have that issue, but just recently did it suddenly become 'cool' to like cartoons... well, it's at least a teen trend, seeing as it's now being marketed at Hottopic, which now the kids who used to make fun of me are wearing t-shirts of cartoons they only saw like... say, once and probably some years ago? It's like the Zim fad, but ten times worse. ("OMG I LUUUUV GIR, BUT WHO DA HECK IZ ZIM? LOLOLOL I BUY TEE ANYWAY 2 BE KEWL")

That never makes sense to me why people would have that train of thought to begin with... cartoons are more than 'mindless nonsense'. :/

Those same types of people will act like a 4 year old in public when they can't have their way, and then act as if they don't care when you tell them. |:
Nobody ever fully matures, I mean I'd like to see an adult explain what's so mature about grown-ups gossiping about politics on the news like insecure teens gossip about each other?

Well, after pondering the situation and the question I have asked I have come to the conclusion that I will watch whatever I want reguardless of what others think of me, why the hell should I care what random people think? I love cartoons, I love animation and if people have an issue with it then screw them, I could not care less. I just didn't know how "normal" it was to be 31 and watching cartoons, but now that I see some of my fellow "brothers" here are in their 20's and one of them admitted to be 40, I guess I fit in just fine.
