It uses a lot of memory because of superfetch. The more memory you have, the more it'll use to preload applications for you to increase responsiveness. The preloading is based on how often you run certain apps, and even what time or day you always run an app so it'll know to preload it a little before that time to speed things up. A good high end PC with a lot of RAM running Vista is way faster than XP. 1GB of RAM will get you performance around XP levels, maybe a bit better if you have a decent CPU to boot.

I bet it's McAffee or Norton, they are both terribly ineffective and giant system hogs.

They were bitching about Vista's kernal being locked down for security because it would prevent them from making antivirus for it when AVG, Avast! and Trend Micro all managed to make Vista compatible antivirus already Symantec and McAffee are just bitching because they don't want Vista to be more secure as it would hurt their business.

I just installed the 32 bit version of MATLAB and its running FLAWLESSLY on 64 bit VISTA .... and its SOOO fucking fast and smooth. I love it
