So, is it true that Obama will jail / fine me for refusing to buy health insurance?

Shrubya...a lost tax credit is the same thing as an extra tax. Maybe if you're really grasping at straws and want to hide behind semantics, it's not, but the end result will be the same: you will have less money in your pocket than someone who does sign up for insurance.

Although he formerly opposed it, Clinton and others have convinced Obama to support the idea of mandatory minimal insurance (with tax credits for those who can't afford it and some exceptions as well). There was never any suggestion of jail time for refusing to get health insurance, perhaps a fine or something. But I'll tell you what, if you get sick, you stay home and die rather than going to the emergency room where the rest of us pay for your care and I'll support an exception for you.

It's impossible to say at this point whether or not this proposal will make it into any final bill. Some are for it, some are against it and there are currently 5 bills and all of them will change considerably as they are brought together and reconciled and the various amendments to those bills are voted on.

It is only a fine...not incarceration. You know, like you pay if you don't file income tax every year. By the way, this is a miserable attempt at a slippery slope...but I can now expect that kind of failure from neo-cons.

Yes, and you'd deserve it. Hospitals have to treat anyone who needs help, and the rest of us are stuck with high bills because the hospitals are trying to recoup the costs of treating the uninsured. Essentially, by refusing to buy your own insurance, you will be stealing your health care from the rest of us. Thieves should be fined and jailed as punishment for their crimes.
