Since when is it an "obligation" to learn about other cultures?

This is what I mean:

I have no problem learning about another culture if the opportunity presents itself to me, I'll be happy to take advantage of the opportunity. But if I don't go out of my way to learn about another then why do I get **** for it?

If I were to like another culture more than my own then I'd be hearing about how I'm a "self hater" or a "sellout" from other people who somehow think it's my obligation to "keep my culture alive". But if I am happy with my own culture and I don't go out of my way to learn about others then I also get **** for it.

Can anyone explain this for me? So ultimately I have to make my culture my favorite culture just to get the approval of my ethnicity but I also have to know a little about others so that I'm not considered a "bigot"?

There's a difference between knowing everything about a culture and being respectful.

There's a difference between interest in other cultures and asking a question saying "could i pass off as a white boy?" and then ranting about how mexicans suck and you want to be white. What you're describing is fine but there are actual self haters on here.
