Shrek 4 takes less than it's predecessor sequels on it's first day.

On Friday, Shrek Forever After grabbed an estimated $20.8 million on approximately 9,500 screens at 4,359 locations, easily leading the day but debuting closer to Kung Fu Panda than its Shrek brethren. The fourth Shrek's release included a record number of 3D locations (2,373) and a record number of IMAX locations (194), but how much they contributed is unavailable as of this writing.

Without a 3D boost, Kung Fu Panda made $20.3 million on its first day, while Shrek the Third generated $38.4 million on its first day and went on to break the animated opening weekend record with $121.6 million. Shrek 2's first Friday was also greater than Shrek Forever After, grossing $28.3 million after opening on a Wednesday. The first Shrek bagged $11.6 million on its first day back in 2001.

Should Shrek Forever After follow Shrek the Third's pattern, its opening weekend would come in at over $65 million.

Of course it's only the first day and will make lots of money but it is still a surprise considering how popular the franchise is and it being in 3D. Did Prince of Persia do the damage I wonder?

i've like all 3 so far, but i think they are milking it a it and people are just thinking i'll wait tilll its cheap on dvd or on the TV. Its not a major watch. Plus i havent seen any promotiion for it.

I didn't even know this was out until I saw a quick glimpse of the premier celebrity fashions on a BBC 15 second news alert so I'm not surprised it's faltered.

It's had no publicity.

Sorry if this is being stupid, but does the $20.8m include the 3d screenings or are there still figures to come for them?

If this is including them, then it's a pretty major flop in comparison to the predecessors (not a flop in general, just comparison before someone will no doubt jump on this) If the 3D screenings aren't included, I reckon once they are this will probably have taken more than Shrek the Third.

Agree with Soundburst though, I didn't even know this was near release, I'd seen a couple of cardboard cut outs at the cinema last time I was there, but nothing since which is weird since this is the last one isn't it?

They've done a few bits in the US. They'll probably come to the UK in the next week or so. It's possible they wasn't over as much because of all the flight problems we are having at the moment.

Do you think that the global recession effects these things?

Like, if Shrek 3 came out in 2007 maybe more people rushed out to see it but now people have to consider more carefully what a trip to the cinema costs etc

I'm not entirely sure. The way I read it it is included.
On the article it also says this about that day.

Iron Man 2 was second on Friday with an estimated $7.5 million, down 51 percent from last Friday, and its total rose to $232.1 million in 15 days. The first Iron Man fell 42 percent to $8.7 million on its third Friday, tallying $199.9 million through the same point.

Robin Hood tumbled almost as steeply as Kingdom of Heaven, King Arthur and Troy in its second Friday, off 56 percent to an estimated $5.7 million, increasing its sum to $53.5 million in eight days. Gladiator was down 36 percent on its second Friday.

When you think Robin Hood has only been open a week and already it's dropped 56% and only taken $53 million in a week that is a really bad sign for that film.had a budget of $200 million

I think things will turn around for Shrek 4 but it's a worry. The strangest thing is Prince of Persia hasn't even opened. When that opens it could be bad news for this and Robin Hood.

July 2nd, only 3 weeks before Toy Story 3 on 23 so I doubt the film will gross much overall since by week 3 I guess TS will be taking all it's screens and potential viewers

I have a 7 year old brother as an excuse to go to see Shrek 4. I liked the last one so I'm excited about this one :o I'm not bothered about Toy Story 3 because I never saw the first two.

Probably factors in to things, because going to the cinema isn't cheap anymore, especially when you're taking kiRAB along.

However,I do think the general public is gradually tiring of the overexposed summer sequels, remakes (with sequels),superhero movies (with sequels) and re-imaginations.
It's not that noticeable yet,but it's a natural process IMO.

its not out yet, the showing was an advanced preview only at some cinemas around the UK could have gone to my local cinema but the showing was on in the day @ 1215 dont want to see it that badly that i needed to book a day off work to see it! :P
