i can understand your fear,we all have our own, believe me. while there is a risk of catching "something' there ARE very strict protocals about cleaning and sanitation. all gurneys have to be fully sterilized before they can go back into use again. and everything in your bed is fully sanitized too. the matresses are all covered in a plastic type of material, not like your matress at home. everything has to be able to be fully sanitized and disindfected before it can be used again.
now,as far as the actual anesthesia for THIS particular surgery? i actually had mine done while awake. i have sympathetic damage in my face from spinal cord injury and had just had a bad reaction with a spontaneous pain syndrome that developed in the right side of my upper and lower jaw,JUST from having one tooth drilled an filled on the upper right a week before my surgery. i can get this insane stuff just from the SNS damage, its really insane let me tell ya. but becasue of the risks(can just hit teeth and could have created more problems for me than i already had) with intubation, when i told the anesthesiologist about this issue,he told me that since the do do a full scalene block before the surgery in the shoulder area, that i could have this awake, just sedated with fentanyl and versed. believe it or not, everything went extremely well(slept thru almost all of it) and i did not even have to go into the recovery room or have to 'come out' of anesthesia. i felt really good after the actual surgery. they shot me right up to my room right from the OR. this is just one option with the rotator repair surgery that really did help in me not having to go thru the usual surgical crap.
they simply do that block right at the neck area, not really painful, they numb everything first(along with a big kick of the fent and versed before they do it),but this fully blocks that entire arm and the shoulder so you just don;t "feel'. your arm is like dead there for a while. i just couldn't believe that this was an actual option and how much better i felt after this surgery than the five others i had had to have before it. i too have had anesthesia issues before too but that was a awhile ago when they used to use something different. how long ago was your last experience with the anesthesia reactions? they DO have different meds they can use now, they have different options than they used to. all you have to do is let the anesthsiologist know, and they will take it from there. do you remember the actual name of the anti nausea med they gave you before? they also have different options for that too.
but we are way ahead of ourselves here. you really do just need to know exactly whats going on in your shoulder. whatever does or does not actually show would realistically dictate just what needs to be done. it could be some form of PTor it could need surgery. you just really need to know now vs later, trust me on that one. but you DO have some better surgical options than they used to have. if i had to do another shoulder surgery on my left one since it is getting bad too,i would do the awake thing all over again in a heartbeat. it just really went okay and i DID feel soo much better than i would do if i had the "normal" anesthesia. no recoverery room and not feeling like crap either. that part was great. i was wide awake(and starving) by the time they wheeled me out of that OR and got up to my room, bypassing that recovery room alltogether. just some info for ya.
