Should "Goodwill" be paid for in a medical practice when a partnership offer is made?

I have been offered partnership in a medical practice. A significant portion of the buy-in cost goes toward "Goodwill". I understand the concept of Goodwill, but am hoping to find out if this is something that individuals still pay for in contract negotiations.

Yes, this is still used. It has more to do with accounting than anything else.
