Shikabane Hime (aka The New Gainax Show) Talkback

Not to compare this with Lagann, but I was expecting this to have something cool like Lagann did in the first episode, where they burst out of the caves.

I'll quit saying stuff like this after this episode. :P

Well, they can't all be EPIC DRILLS THAT PIERCE THROUGH THE FABRIC OF AWESOMENESS AND...sorry I'll stop now.

And like someone said earlier, this show is to Lagaan as to what FLCL was to Evangelion. You know, a rest show after the craziness of their last one. (though FLCL is still insane)

I only ever look on youtube, what 3 other sites do they use?

Haven't seen 12 go up yet, I figured it might end up longer then a week after 11 because of the holidays and all though.

Their own site, Hulu, and Joost. I usually only ever look on YouTube as well, since Hulu and Joost have stupid buffering habits, but I may start watching them on their site now, since the quality is much better than on YouTube. But as far as I know, they update all four at the same time, so there's no advantage to checking one site before another if seeing it first is your intention. Surprisingly, FUNimation hasn't started using Crunchyroll, even though they're using every other site and every other company is using Crunchyroll, especially now that they're fully legit and only put up anime with the owner's permission and compensate them for it.

Episode 12

-Why Gainax? Why must you make every "aniki" die? I mean, yeah, sure I kind of saw it coming a long time ago, but....that doesn't mean you can't surprise me? I mean, come on man! Keisei was awesome. And just like Kamina, he even went super badass to take out those guys. I was half expecting him to go "So long buddy" to Ouri during the death scene

-Nevertheless, the action in this was spot-on awesome. Makina going crazy on that smoke guy was one of the best scenes of the whole episode. Though it was a bit cryptic when the sound stopped and we couldn't hear her screaming.

-I hate that cat. A lot.

-Now we'll see if Ouri continues the destiny of Gainax protagonists of being emo for a really annoyingly long time. However, I'm hoping he takes the Simon route and becomes awesome.

In parallel, EVA was a scripted-emotional wall banger, and FLCL was the ad-libbed natural heaRABpin no-sense.

So since Gurren was...pulling every single epic emotion and manly tears, this show's going to be...

Calmer?

With Gainax, I'll give this show 3 episodes at least. Usually my head's off its hinges by then.

Yeah, Gainax made "aniki" die, just like we all thought, but they still made Keisei's death almost as epic as Kamina's. Now it's time for Ouri to become the emo Gainax protagonist and then hopefully become badass like his now dead aniki as he takes over his role. One more episode this season, right? And it's about Keisei's funeral, according to the preview. Big potential for emo-ness.

Watched ep 12 and pretty much even though everyone, including me saw this coming from almost the start of the series. I thought it was done pretty damn awesomely. Keisei just went out swinging and his last moments with Makina were really touching.

Then seeing Makina just go off was cool. I hope Ouri now becomes useful or something though.

After episode 12, FUNimation didn't put any new episodes on any of the sites they use for over 2 weeks, but today, they added episodes 13 and 14, but not on YouTube, only on their own FUNimation Videos website. What's interesting is that, technically, episode 13 is the last episode of the first season, Aka, and episode 14 is the first episode of the second season, Kuro, which means FUNimation owns this other season, and is doing the same thing with it as the first season, which they hadn't announced yet, although it was obviously assumed. Anyway, on to how the first season enRAB and the second begins after I watch these episodes...

I watched the first episode, and I loved it. Based on the first episode, it's no Evangelion, FLCL, or Gurren Lagann, but that's just based on the first episode, and I didn't really expect it to be, although it still deserves more hype. I guess I didn't hear about Gurren Lagann when it was coming out, so I don't know how much the hype has changed. Anyway, I'm thankful that this show has started, and seems pretty good so far, since it's such a short time after Gurren Lagann, with the dub of that still premiering and the bilingual DVRAB starting to be released next month. I know it's early, but I still hope this gets licensed soon, although the Rebuild of Evangelion should be licensed before that. Have they announced if they have a set nuraber of episodes for the series, and if so, how many? I look forward to the next episode. Also, Gainax references are always good, and I think that list got them all covered, but whether it's an intentional reference or not, I loved the fact that the first word spoken in the series, other than Ouri's name, was "aniki"...

Well I'm glad the 'second season' started right up from Funi, although it appears that they just consider it one show. Which makes sense since there was really no feel of a 'finale' to ep 13. Heck 90% of it was just recap/flasrabroadack it felt like.

So 14 was an actual episode.

I love the new Shikabane who's the bunny girl, I think they said her was name "Fresh"? The foreign accented Japanese just sounRAB so hillarious. I can't believe there's a contracted monk even more of an otaku then Keisei was though lol and one of his shikabane is as big an otaku, maybe even more-so since she's the doujin freak

and what do ya know the breast goddess re-appears with bento for Ouri...

Why no new OP/ED? At least update the animation. They have a new Shikabane/Contracted monk and are still showing Minai in the OP/ED.

Haha, I don't think it was an intentional reference like some of the others may have been, I just like it's funny that I start watching the new Gainax show that's obviously nothing like Gurren Lagann other than Gainax using similar animation, and the first thing I hear is what I heard more than anything else in Gurren Lagann, especially since they obviously do intentionally reference their previous works in pretty much every new anime they make.

Shikabane Hime has 2 different seasons with 2 different names, the first being Aka, and the second being Kuro. However, Aka ended with little more than recaps, certainly no real finale, then Kuro began with the same OP and ED, with the same animation, other than changing the name in the logo from Aka to Kuro, and continued with the same story, timeframe, and enemies. On the other hand, the previous Gainax show, Gurren Lagann, was one season, and yet there was an episode in the middle that was more of a finale than this finale, followed by a recap episode, then another episode with an almost completely new OP (different verse of the same song with different animation) and a completely new ED, taking place 7 years later with different enemies. Also, the Shikabane Hime ED had changes within the first season. Where is the logic?

Anyway, at least the first episode of Kuro introduced some new characters. First we get a glimpse of a new piece of fanservice, later revealed to be a Shikabane Hime of a new contracted monk, and both are way more of otaku than Keisei could've ever dreamed to be. Also, we get to see some of the older characters, including everyone's favorite lesbian Breast Goddess!

If you haven't seen yet, FUNimation again waited 2 weeks then released 2 episodes, so episodes 15 and 16 are now up. More after I finish watching both of them. Part of the way into episode 16 I remerabered I should post it on here. By the way, episode 16 opens with some Makina fanservice.

EDIT: Wow, episode 16 is full of fanservice! FULL!

Something is wrong when the first post on a new episode is by me, especially when the last post in this thread was by me too and that was a week ago. Gainax made Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, and Gurren Lagann. Give their new show a chance. Anyway, episode 2, "Continuation of the Game", aired today.
After several children killed in a highway accident came back to life as corpses, Makina is dispatched to kill them. However, Ouri Kagami gets in the way when one of them pleaRAB to him to help her escape. Keisei and a band of anti-corpse monks assist Makina to take down the child corpses.
Also, Funimation's YouTube channel is listing the first episode under its schedule for next week. Hopefully more people will watch it because of that and hopefully it means they will license it, but they may not.
EDIT: Anime News Network has an an article about this called "Funimation's YouTube Channel Schedules Shikabane Hime".

Episode 17 is up. I'll post more about it if there's any talkback for any of the past 3 episodes. So after getting no new ED or even updated animation from the first season to the second one, we get a completely new one partway into the second season. This is making less and less sense.

I really don't get why Minai was put in the new ending. She hasn't appeared in forever, wasn't even in the show that much. I guess they just love animating her figure

Anyway got caught up to ep 17 and I'm surprised by a few things

Seems like lesbian breast goddess may actually have leanings towarRAB the man team... Definitely seems to be interested in Ouri.

The whole Itsuki/Takamasa story continues to puzzle me. I know they went to great lengths to show Takamasa saying he realizes Itsuki isn't human, they can't be together, etc... But THEY STILL keep giving off the couple vibe. I think they're just giving lip-service and deep down are in love with each other.

and what the heck... Keisei????

Did anyone else freak out when that dead little girl came back to life? I don't know if it was the imagery or the music or whatever but man, when her head came out of the coffin and everybody screamed, my heart lept in my chest.

You know when I said I wasn't feeling the theme song? I take that back.

This week's Gainax reference is...

One of the dolls that Keisei had was of schoolteacher Yoko with different hair.

Definitely. She died 8 episodes through, but they kept the fanservice-y picture of her int he ED through the rest of the season and part of the second one, and then put her in the new one, and she was one of the biggest pieces of fanservice, so... yeah.
