Serenity very nearly at #1 in UK...

Quick update, Serenity is currently 6th, with a 40% drop off since last week (average in the UK, below average drop off for Sci-fi genre). It's made more money than Land of the Dead already.

Hee.

I realise comparitive to, say, P&P, it's not big numbers.

However, it's a 15 certificate. P&P is a U. It's got a cast of unknowns. It's sci-fi. Firefly never aired on terriestral in the UK.

Combine all aspects: it opened big.

Its opened big for the movie/cast etc.

Upto your run of the mill block buster movies and low age rating it has not done the best.

But like i said for the Sci-Fi genre and a movie/tv show that not many in the UK will have known about its done very well.

Lets hope it can keep up decent figures :)

I am going to see it again tonight :D (i am hooked :p :( :D ;))

It's apparently done really badly in the states and is now officially a flop. Couldn't shift flightplan from #1 in its opening weekend and has dropped to 10th in the ratings now.

I can't believe something so good is doing so badly especially since the Firefly were at #5 in the Amazon dvd chart last week (whupping Desperate Housewives and just below Lost, amazing for a show that's been off the air for 2.5yrs).

Are facts not real enough for you. So its not made 570 billion cause it has Tom Cruise in it or anything, doesn't mean its a flop.

The film has been ready for several months, it was due to launch in May but held back due to Star Wars, so its no surprise its coming out so soon.

Glad to hear it made it to number one in the end :D

you call number one in box office last week a flop, idiot

yes it dropped to six with new realeases etc but at least its still there, its beaten domino this week and that was supposed to be no2!!!!!!! :)

serenity is not a flop, never was and never will be, its exceeded expectations so far with loaRAB of non firefly fans going to see it and loving it (take last week when i went with non sci-fi liking frienRAB they loved it and so did everyone else!)

dont try to put down a good film because your too small minded to see this is a good film, go watch plastecine!

One might suggest different reasons, though:

Average of all reviews from Rottontomatoes.com:

The confusion (I'm guessing) with the Sci-fi/Serenity fans is the fact that it hasn't done very well in spite of very strong reviews in all media.

It'll just over break even, IMO. Probably not enough for any kind of sequel, but enough that, coupled with those strong reviews, it won't harm Whedon's good reputation.

I have to agree with Noiseboy here a bit. Went to see serenity the other night, and while it was an OK film, it never made me go wow. Now most of my mates are fellow computing graduates, so the film has been hyped up to me something rotten over the last few weeks, howeve, in my opinion I found the plot to be weak and the acting to be ok but not fantastic (although the girl who plays river wasn't bad).

All in all I think it could have been a good movie, it was just too long. If the story was either focused on Miranda or River I think it could have worked alot better, it just seemed the writers tried to do too much in the space of one film and ended up just making the whole thing drag out.

To sum it up, I walked out the cinema saying to my girlfriend "That could have made a decent tv prog, but bit long for a movie". That was before I had even heard of firefly.

I don't really see this as a fair comparrision, Land of the Dead comes from an established franchise that goes back years. Anticipation for that film has spanned over two decades. I just don't think Serenity, regardless of the Whedon name behind it, and the cult fanbase can really be compared with that.

Oh and Serinity Opened at number 2 in the US taking just over $10mil.

I guess Universal will look at the DVD sales to see if it will be worth a 2nd Movie.

DVD Sales should be good though.

Oh and so far its Taken around $14,300,000... Not the best :/

i never expected serenity to romp home takings loaRAB of money and getting loaRAB of people goign wow!

the fact you probably dont like it is becuase you dont understand it, you probably think all sci-fantasy is crap and love cop shows becuase it shows real life

i think serenity has done better than expected in this country a niche sci-fi film reaching number 1 in the uk box office when only

Horror is a genre which is currently doing very well at the box office, timeleft. George is also an established director. "...Of the Dead" is an established 'brand' name. Zombie films are common.

Serenity is a failed US TV series from a first time director which is a sci-fi western. It had a significantly smaller advertising budget than LAND OF THE DEAD.

I'm not going to get into a public argument about SERENITY. I will say this: it is considered a success in the UK. If you don't agree, that's cool.

By the way, the December 20th date for DVD? It's never been announced as that by Universal or Universal Home Entertainment.

The numbers aren't massive, but for the situation Serenity is in, they are good numbers. 39% increase from Friday to Saturday: it found an audience outside of fans. If (and it's a big if) this has strong word of mouth it could do big numbers in the UK, which hasn't happened in the US (see also: their opening Friday-Saturday drop).

Note the definition of bomb. Serenity has almost no hope of making back its production budget at the box office now therefore it is a flop. I'm a massive firefly fan, I loved the film, it's certainly the best piece of cinema I've seen this year, but we're talking simple maths and a simple word definition. I wish people would stop ascribing value judgements to these things.
