Serenity very nearly at #1 in UK...

Hmmm.... The site seems to assume that everyone with this opinion was a "fan" before seeing the movie. I certainly had a passing interest in the TV show (I was a huge Buffy fan) before, but was bowled over by how good the movie was. I'm sure there are a lot of other people like myself too. There seems little assumption in Devin Faraci's that the movie could draw people in, create "fans" of Serenity, not Firefly. This has happened in the UK on the back of strong reviews, but seems to have failed to ignite elsewhere. Certainly my optimism for a sequel (and I'm sure that of many others) is based solely on this movie - and not an pre-conceived ideas from some cancelled TV, which was cancelled before it was ever shown in the UK. Perhaps I'm being "glass half full" about future prospects, but certainly not for the reasons the jackass in who wrote the article on the fansite 'Chud' seems to assume.
 
People like the film, lots of people. Whats wrong with that? It became quite popular and people just started reccomending it. Fans just wanted it to do well for several reasons a) to prove Fox wrong, b) to thank Universal for picking it up, c) to show their love of Joss, the show and the actors and d) to try and get sequels.

Im a firm beliver in "if you like it, good for you, if not then stop complaining and go talk about something you like." Whats the point in coming onto the net to complain about stuff you don't like? (Not directed at anyone particular)
 
I'm a big fan of Firefly and enjoyed Serenity for what it was just like thousanRAB of other people do, it's the rabid fanboyism it seems to provoke that I was calling ridiculous. It makes the Star Wars fans who camp outside the cinema look like amateurs.

People printing out flyers and buying tickets simply to give away is the wrong side of obsessive in my book but I'm wrong to knock them if that's what they enjoy. I just felt like airing my view.
 
Hmm I see what you mean, but I don't see it as freakish as the Star Wars fans (perhaps cause im a Firefly fan), I see it as more of a nice deed. Ah well, enough of all this nonsense, the film rocks :P
 
No advertising? I've seen 3 or 4 different trailer over the course of the last few months plus tv adverts and the Sci Fi Channel running mini documentary/contest adverts. No bill posters though or bus stop aRAB but that's probably cause I don't get the bus any more

I've seen far more advertising for Serenity than I've seen for Pride and Prejudice or Wallace and Gromett (though arguably they need less advertising having a higher national profile)
 
I don't know where you have been then as the 2 latter movies both had massive reviews in all the major papers.

Wallace and Gromit has a fair amount of TV Coverage and when P&P was about to be released it had a very decent amount of TV time.
 
But it dropped to No. 9 the following week, suggesting it's not really reaching to an audience other than the fans; and even its opening weekend take was some way below even the lowest expectations. (Then again, there's still video/DVD.)



But it only just beat Pride & Prejudice apparently, and it's also not likely to hold off Wallace & Gromit (especially after the fire).
