Sequals that are better than the original?

I really do want to see "HellboyII" but I haven't seen the 1st one:(.

Shall I watch the 1st Film first or is it one of those Sequels where you don't need to watch the 1st:).
 
Entertaining though they are each is pretty much a remix of what went before it really with the last two being much the same film in many ways only in Ultimatum we find out a little more about Bourne (but not the whole truth, despite what we were promised in advance).

I'll go for The Empire Strikes Back.
 
Yeah I was unsure about whether to put that or not,really just clutching at straws trying to think of sequels better than their original.
You're right,I do often (wrongly) consider it a loose sequel just because of the iconic 'Man with No Name' character.


As for Silence of the Lambs,that surely can be considered a sequel to Manhunter.
 
Hmmmm tough choice.

It's great that you could watch it without seeing the 1st but then at the same time I personally really like Character driven Stories so looks like I need to think really carefully about this one.

The X Files: I Want To Believe.
Terminator 2.
X-Men 2.
Mission Impossible 3.
Batman Returns.

That's all that spring to mind at the moment.
 
I actually can't think of any off the top of my head.

However I can think of three cases where the sequel has matched the original, but for various reasons not surpassed it:-

Alien/Aliens
Terminator/T2
Godfather & Part II
 
I use to think Temple was better than Raiders.But after watching Radiers last year i'm not so sure now.Don't get me wrong Temple is a good film.

I thought Rocky III & Rocky IV were better than Rocky.
