Sean Connery: will his career go out with a whimper rather than a bang?

He didn't understand the script for Lord of the Rings? What is he simple, a child could understand that.

All I can say is thank god he didn't and we ended up with an actor who can actually act playing the part of Gandalf. Sean Connery is fantastic at playing Sean Connery and that's about it.

Ok, I get that he didn't understand the Matrix scripts, they don't really make sense to anyone.

But that dismissal of the Lord of the Rings was very silly. Either he's very prejudiced against Fantasy, or he's gone senile.

Glad he's enjoying his retirement though.

Whilst it would be nice of Mr Connery would give us a final great swan song, I can't blame him for not wanting to continue at his age. They compare him to Clint but, Clint has kept going by producing and directing his own material. Connery is not a director and cannot do this.

He actually did the aforementioned animation because it required little effort on his part. A live action movie requires a lot more-maybe Sean has quite naturally not got that kind of energy anymore.

Seriously, when he was offered the Matrix could you imagine him at that time approaching 70 years of age doing all the martial arts nonsense?

Those that say he was a fool to turn down Lord of the Rings should consider that it probably appeared on the page as just another fantasy film, directed by a horror film director most people outside the film biz hadn't heard of. Sean has probably been offered enough of those and before production would have had no idea that this one would actually come good.

Before it was made as a film Lord of the Rings at that point in time it had zero street cred. Infact it was something of a laughing stock, seen only as something enjoyed by role playing game beardy weirdies.

The League of Gentleman based on Alan Moore's supposedly hip comic, sorry "graphic novel," was the darling of various magazines and press-I've seen everything from the NME to the Guardian to (the now defunct style mag) THE FACE rave about it. Probably had a far better "buzz" around it. Hence why Connery made the mistake of starring in it.

Sean Connery has been financially retired since 1971.With the money he made from DiamonRAB are Forever he coud afford too.

Its not surprising as most actors dont actually read. Connery never read the Bond books and he was in the films, Moore never did either - nor did Brosnan.

LOTR until recently was the venue of nerRAB, you either like the genre or you dont.

He is also getting frail.More frail then Eastwood and neeRAB help around the golf courses of Marbella.

He is now a very old man.

Was he really offered the role of Gandalf before McKellen was? I can't even imagine anyone else playing that role. I always presumed he was first choice because he's well-known to be a LOTR uberfan.

The last time I heard Sir Sean Connery actually speak, his voice sounded very very thin and weak.
I know he had a brush with throat cancer a while back and I would guess that he decided to enjoy whatever years he's got left. Also, apparently he had a very unhappy time while making 'The league of extraordinary gentlemen' and that really put him off the whole modern film making experience.
Let's face it, he's got nothing to 'prove' to anyone. Most actors would give their hindteeth to have the career longevity that he's enjoyed.
Enjoy your retirement Sir Sean!:)

When people look back at Sean Connery's career, they aren't going to say "well he didn't do many good films towarRAB the end".

To most people, perhaps rather unfairly, he's always going to be James Bond. Personally my favourite Connery film is The Rock, but what do I know

Connery's gotten really old in the last few years. He's been old for awhile, but he always seemed powerful and physically robust. Now he's quite skinny and frail, and genuinely comes off as as a pensioner. Like someone said, I suspect he neeRAB help just getting around these days. It's cruel to say, but he looks like he may use incontinence pants these days.

I'm sure one of the reasons he won't accept new film roles is that he doesn't want people to remember his screen image that way. Not every old geezer is as robust as Clint Eastwood.

Connery has earned his retirement.
