Scariest film, ever!!

Most films outhere that are under the category of 'scary films' rely too much on a liilte tension with a bit of gore and then a scary bit to make you think 'WoW' that was a fantastic horror.

With the money being thrown around at the moment, surely there must be a Director/Script Writers qualified to produce a film with tension, phsycological, spine tingling moments from beginning to end.

Something that keeps you on your toes, a film that you think you know what or who or why then the next scene totaling destroys what you have just thought!!

It does sadden me when the latest so called 'scary movies' rely on old tricks, the same formula.

If I was talented enough, I would attempt to write a script myself, but I'm not. I know what I want and I think a lot of other people want the same not the same old films done over and over again!!

I would like to thank all for your help and all the films mentioned I will take a look at and post what I think ;)
 
i think the only horror film i havent been able to watch yet is the texas chain saw massacre............... :o

my mate told me to watch it and i think i watched the first half hour of it and couldnt watch it...............

dont think the phone box is all that good really...... didnt find that too interesting.... as for a mild horror film id say summats like scream or mayb the freddy series of films ?
 
I have watched all of these films and think they are great: -

John Capenters - The Thing, Vampires
Stephen Kings - Pet Semetary, Thinner, IT, Carrie
The Wicker Man - very good
Rosemary's Baby
The Devil Rides Out - this one is very weird
Jacobs Ladder

13 Ghosts (watch this alone and with a pair of heaphones if possible, scared the crap outta me because of the background sounRAB)

Wrong Turn - this is a new one but it well creepy plus it has Eliza Dushku in it so it's a must see.
After Midnight - if you can get it.
 
Aint-it-cool have reported a while back that Guilermo Del Toro is going to make the story "At the Mountains of Madness" by H.P. Lovecraft into a movie. It may even be the next movie on his slate. He has stated that it will be exactly as the book, with no changes bringing it up to date etc (it is set in the 1920's). If this movie gets made it should be a pretty scary film. The atmosphere in the book is pretty tense, so with careful film-making should translate very well. I'm looking forward to this one a great deal...
 
Night of the Living dead and Dawn of the Dead are a still the greatest Zombie films ever made. Worth watching just so you can see how many things pay hommage to them.

If you want really shocking horror look to Hong Kong for the likes or Untold Story, Ebola Syndrome or anything by Miike Takashi (like Audition).
 
Sorry, I can't let that one go.

As a debut feature film, OK I'll give him full credit for imagination. It was clear Lynch had talent and potential as a film maker but it isn't even close to his best work. I've heard many different attempts to explain the meaning of the film ranging from a paranoid take on the adolescent fear of monogamy through a bleak and pessimistic view of modern society to an all out attack on christianity. Personally, I think his films are better left unexplained but if pushed I'd describe it as 'a film student messing about'.

Blue Velvet, The Elephant man, the sublime The Straight Story and even the much maligned Dune are all better films than Eraserhead ....in this armchair critic's opinion at least.

Spot on with the scene from Exorcist 3. It's the only time I can remember an entire cinema audience gasping, shrieking and in the case of one of the people I was with physically jumping up and shouting 'f***ing hell' during a film. It should be in every film student's curriculum as a lesson in 'how to scare the bejesus out of your audience'.

I just can't bring myself to go and see Freddy Vs Jason but I really hope Freddy wins. ....Don't tell me. ;)
 
I recently got this on DVD and think that the effects stand up excellently against those of today. Don't forget, this film was made long before the use of CG.

As an aside, I was pleased to hear that Indy 4 is going to be made like the previous 3 movies, without CG! Doing the stunts the old fashioned way. :)
 
I have to say that Species and Species II had my trousers on brown alert!!! I absolutely HATE weird birth scenes and tendrils popping out of the skin. SenRAB shivers down my spine.
 
In light of Channel 4's 100 scariest movie and TV moments and Halloween on the horizon I thought I'd ressurect this thread. Check my Boris Karloff steezo.

There were some pretty unexpected things in there, notably the Metz advert and Chris Morris' Jam. :confused:

The top ten were all movies and for anyone interested, they were listed as follows:

10. A Nightmare on Elm Street. - Deservedly so. Glad to see Freddy beat Jason in the poll (please don't tell me the outcome of the film I'm waiting for the video). Probably my all time favourite horror movie character.

9. The Omen - Yup, pretty damn creepy.

8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - A classic. One of the freakiest films I've ever seen.

7. Halloween - Never really did it for me but a worthy top ten entry.

6. Ring - Yes Peej, the Japanese version. ;) Very pleased to see Ring in there.

5. The Blair Witch Project - Watching it again as we speak. Loved it the first time, The thirtieth time is no less compelling.

4. Alien - Preffered the sequel myself but you've got to hand it to Ridley for a mould breaking concept.

3. Jaws - How could it not be in there? Although they didn't highlight Quint's blood gargling scene which has to be one of the most horrible moments in cinematic history.

2. The Exorcist - Predictably near the top. Maybe I saw it too late but it never really frightened me.

1. The Shining - Specifically the 'Here's Johnny' scene. Excellent film, glad it beat the Exorcist.

The Thing is a very scary and gory film,, certainly one of the most scary ever.

I have to admit, I've only seen the Mainstream version of the Ring, but the bit where the girl comes out of the TV freaked me out!!

But that happened (in our local cinema anyway) when Erica Eleniak came out of the cake in Under Seige.
 
Just watched this, it was ok, certainly not the scariest I've seen and the scene you mentioned good but too false.

I give exorcist 3 a 6 out of 10, but thank you for recommending this film, I'm in no way ungrateful. However, I still thirst for the scariest film ever!!:cool:
 
Scariest film ever, eh? Well, I'm not really a fan of horror flicks but I have seen a few in my time. Try these out:

The Thing - the claustrophobia makes this unmissable! My fave line is when Norris has a 'heart attack' and his head scuttles out of the room with one of the others saying 'You've gotta be f***ing kidding!" Then MacReady torches it!

Poltergeist 2 - the part I call 'The Braces Bit'. Need I say more? I was put off from EVER having braces when I saw that film as a kid!

13 Ghosts (the remake) - Not really scary, but the ghost effects are brilliant!
