Saw 2 - Can you go too far?

Having just seen the trailer for Saw 2, I was wondering if there is a line between horror and just plain nastiness.

The origanal was dark and very sadistic and I must say I didn't really find it enjoyable as entertainment (or a suitable date movie, which is when I saw it!).

This one looks even worse (though I've not seen it)

Is there a point where a horror stops being entertaining and becomes just nasty?

Sorry about that mate, I assumed you had seen it :o
Thank gawd for that becasue I too am one of the many that can't wait to see this new Saw movie, if its anything like the 1st even better, although I hope it has a bit more excitement throughout this time round...as I only really liked the 1st one because of the great suspence towarRAB a shocking ending. Once you saw the end of the 1st one it was one of those movies that you saw no point in watching again. (no puns intended) :D

I don't mind stupid, cartoon violence like that you see in The Evil Dead or any zombie films. But I can't stand cruelty, espescially that which could be easily copied. I remember a scene in Shallow Grave (I think) where a guy is locked in a chest freezer, which I found a bit sick and disturbing. On the other hand, there was a scene in Lock, Stock.....where a guy is hitting golf balls at a bound victim, which was cruel but managed to be quite funny too. So I think it's the combination of cruelty plus po-faced seriousness that I really object to.

I usually love a good ol' horror movie but Saw turned my stomach. Gore is all well and good and sinister films are very entertaining.

But in "Saw" I was watching, eating popcorn, and I suddenly just felt naseous and a little shaken. I left the cinema soon afterwarRAB.

It might just have been me, but I found the original to cross the line and don;t dare see the sequel because I agree with you, it looks even worse.

I've now seen Saw II. If you liked the first one you'll probably like this one too. I actually prefered it to Saw, because the first and last few minutes of the first film didn't make a lot of sense to me. Saw II was more logical and satisfying.

It doesn't shy away from gore. If you don't like that kind of thing you just shouldn't watch this kind of movie. I doubt it will inspire many imitations, though, because it's all a bit elaborate and, well, implausible. Even if it does, I think people are responsible for their own actions. I am glad that we can occasionally see dark films which don't necessarily have happy endings.

Also, I think these films are more about masochism than sadism. We don't identify with Jigsaw, we identify with his victims. That's why it is scary.

Wait until Hostel comes out, supposed to be one of the sickest films ever, people paying to torture and maim others for their enjoyment (getting rave reviews stateside though!)

As for Cheek's advice "The easy solution is not to watch it if you don't want to and leave it to those that do..." I don't think anyone here was seeking a 'solution'. We're just debating these kind of movies - we're all well aware that we don't have to view these movies. If you don't like the debate there's an 'easy solution' to that too...[/QUOTE]
hi mate, I'm all for healthy debate, just not the level of preaching that comes with some of it....... :)

you know, after 24 hours, SawII is definitely one of those films that you just cant get out of your head

The good thing is that its all quite implausible so I'm not too scared

i liked Saw. nice twists and turns too, i thought it was great entertainment.

It had a good clever plot too, normally lacking in horror movies.

I have in the last couple of days seen the trailer to "Saw 2". In all honesty I would not want to go down that road.
Saw 11 would have to be EQUAL or BETTER than the first to be succesful!!

Hi, just adding my 2p worth! :D

Just been to see Saw II and I really enjoyed it. I think I liked the first one slightly more cos I think it was a bit more "rawer" than its sequel (just seemed a bit more commercialised this time around)

And I agree with some people here, this film makes you think as well as scare you!!

And that's right from the shocking opening to the jaw-dropping twist at the end.

Its a success in the states, its already making profit on its first week of release and people are saying saw 2 is only just better then saw 1

I so can't wait to see Saw II. Like most people, I was absolutely shocked and amazed by the ending of the first one. I thought it was an excellent film - great story, good to look at, disturbing.

I haven't even bothered watching the trailer for Saw II yet - what the hell am I playing at?! :)

I saw it last night and was cringing in my seat a great blood feast i loved it. Some very good twists as the first film. I notice within the first 10 mins of the film 3 people get up and walk out so i dont think they knew what they was in for. I think i nearer the mark these sort of films get the more people want to watch them. In our own sick way we all want to see how far these people will go and how far to the line will they push it untill they go over it.

I saw, saw 2(arf arf) at the weekend, and I was quite dissapointed. The sequel didnt really bring any new ideas to the table.

Its too much like the original, with the traps and the puzzles and a twist ending that isint as strong as the first movie.

The premise is basically the same except this time theres a whole house of traps rather than one room, which diminishes the scence of claustraphobia somewhat for me.

It also reminded me of Cube in places.

Its indicative of hollywooRAB reliance of formulaic moviemaking that anything sucessfull is bludegeoned to death with less gripping followups untill the series has lost all credibility.

Saw 2 wasnt that bad but it was a step down from the original rather than a step up, i think, and of course they left the door open for s saw 3

Loved it!
Got in even thougn not 18 (im 17) Students run it at night, so no1 cares about age.
Not very scary, but intelligent.
The needle in a haystack bit made everyone in the cinema cringe!
Twist was brilliant.
