NO NO NO NO NO

No Rogers, you do NOT disable my internet to force me to update to your CRAPPY locked down ROM. I'm using the latest CM and thats FINAL!!!

I'm calling to see how they ID the phones, and if I can sneak some info

EDIT: Tools.. 3 people, had no idea about network flags.... *sigh* anyone know how Rogers can tell the difference in S/W

EDIT2: Howard Forums found out it can't change the IMEI, There is SenseUI involved, and it's STILL 1.5

Edit3: Apparently 1.6 users (rooted for example) can call, if you want to admit it(I see no harm, its just S/W), they "note" your account and remove the restrictions, but EVERYONE'S internet access will be down 24Hrs min. It may just come back if you don't patch but hey.

Ciscogeek,

Unfortunately you are wrong on your recommendations. Rogers as well as FIDO are absolute in their commitment to this. If you do not install this new ROM with new Radio, which is how I believe they are tracking this, your internet will NOT be turned back on. I waited on hold with the FIDO personnel, who have a clue and are in North America not overseas, and they verified with network operations that if they do not see the new firmware on the phone internet will be blocked.

I wonder what plans Bell has for their HSPA network.

I never recommended anything, I am stating my opinion, and what I'm likely to do.

Because this is a 'safety' related thing, I wouldn't put recommendations out.

Edit: I'm seeing a few more sources pointing to the build.prop, perhaps matching Rogers new one may allow access.... We shall see

Another quick hypothesis, before the "block" enables on internet access...

What if they are going by the User-Agent, that has all the info that they need, AND it can be easily spoofed!

Anyone have their internet access axed yet? Its 8:30 EST (they said 6AM was the cutoff) and my access is NOT disabled....

I'm running CyanogenMOD 4.2.13 (Android 1.6, which has the e911/GPS fix)

Looking good....

Must be a rolling blackout. I'm still up but I'll guess that many are off since a speedtest showed me a 500kbs improvement over what I usually get here.

k, rebooted just for kicks to see what happens. Still have data. The day isn't over yet. k, back to WiFI...

And they never were.
I stayed away from all the big boy companies for years now and after being partially back on the grid for only a few months I can see that nothing has changed and I'm glad that I hadn't given them my money for such a long time. Now that I am I'm not at all surprised at the comedy of errors.

To top it all off I went to Rogers Video last night for my first time. Rented 'Earth' to watch with my kids. Now my DVD player died a few years ago and I replaced it with a pc based media centre. No cable box or anything from the big boys but with the variety of free content such as OTA, online, local content, and DVD, I have everything I need. But wouldn't you know it that the rented DVD refused to play due to some DRM or whatever reason. Just to be sure I put it in the laptop that has also played every DVD I've tried, again no play. If I was some script kiddie or hell bent on copying DVDs I could have easily copied it anyway. But I simply wanted to watch it and now I can't. That protection only stopped the good guys. Good move, never gonna rent a DVD again.

They clearly spend more time and effort covering their asses than just doing the right thing which would by default cover their ass. Didn't every small time developer and big time provider catch this GPS bug months ago and did the right thing without a big panic and emergency update? Rogers didn't.

I'm back in!!!

I called(landline), did NOT pick a phone, went to general tech(no wait) said vaguely "I was having some intermittent data issues and some forums said to call up and request a network refresh", he (very eagerly) said sure! turned off the phone, he refreshed, and I'm back.

He proceeded while booting to ask about what specific issues but I kept it vague, text issues, on/off data (i did not get asked about the update!)

If my data goes out in an hour like it seemed in the start, then Rogers is sweeping users in which case, turn your phone off until the whole ordeal is done to avoid being marked again, or risk calling for another refresh,(I'm sure they will catch on soon, but those outsourced peeps LOVE the easy calls!)

(edit: it stayed up 24+ hours)

I prefer the nice method, instead of the death threats to the managers

if they ask about the update say "I did and i had intermittent issues some forums said... blahblah. Voila no root reveal!

enjoy your data(and the free month of data!)

smooth!
This may not last long so get while the gettin's good. I slid right into a nice talking fellow that figured out it might be like the handful of others with a similar problem so would simply fix it himself if I would turn off for a few minutes. sure, and thanks. that's how it should always go with tech support.

I took the time to blow out the innards, clean contacts, micro fibre the camera lens, and make sure everything was perfect.
k, go made a cup of tea, checked email, microfibred the screen. sip tea, power on to check fastboot, did a nandroid backup, reboot.

Power on for real, enter SIM unlock code, hold breath and hehe, I gots data.

It's like crossing the border. You know that you haven't done anything wrong and don't plan to but it is a moment of nerves until you've passed the 1st couple of signs reminding you of the metric/imperial conversion that you feel like you're home.

Hi, I am a newbie here. I joined this forum after Rogers deactivated my internet connection on my HTC Dream. I am wondering one thing. If THEY don't reactivate my connection because I refuse to go back to their crippled software, aren't they breaching the contract I have with them?

It depends on their interpretation of the ToS, They way I interpret it. they have to provide service. but I'm sure their lawyers can convince the court otherwise. There is also the "If you tamper with you phone" clause.. which we all violated.

But do the thing with the network refresh I stated and you're good.

They have been instructed to NOT do anything to rooted/custom ROM users.

Ok this it TOTAL BULL**** !!! I'm running a hero rom with 2.1 firmware WTF! Y the hell would i go back and run rogers crap rom, I dont even think it will work my spl is the 1.33.2005, Rogers is .0009 wouldn't that brick my phone? if i roll back my SPL? I just got all my **** working fast and properly with proper linux swaps and now there pulling this crap..... I think im going to wait it out and see if my 3G gets turned on .......

For those left high and dry when Rogers cut off our internet then failed to provide an adequately high bandwidth download site (currently 2 hours for a 106mb download), I've attached a zipped torrent file. Download and seed to help your Android homies!
